Chapter 89 - Boundary Bloom

Giới Hoa was the final test.

Hạo Nhiên placed six paper flowers around the courtyard.

Not enemies.

Not targets.

Responsibilities.

"The room survives, or you fail."

Tân Thành cracked his neck.

Hạo Nhiên pointed at him. "If you break a flower while stopping me, you fail."

Tân Thành stopped cracking his neck.

Tân Phong looked at the exits.

"If you vanish and return with the answer after everyone dies, you fail."

Tân Phong made a face.

Thuận said nothing.

Hạo Nhiên looked at him last.

"If they move only when you speak, you fail."

That was the cruelest condition.

Then Hạo Nhiên moved.

Not fast at first.

Earlier.

His first step threatened the east flower. Tân Thành planted himself there, too wide, too obvious. Hạo Nhiên turned the threat into the south line, and Tân Thành realized strength placed early could become furniture.

"Shift!" Tân Phong shouted.

Not Thuận.

Good.

Tân Thành shifted instead of bracing.

The flower survived.

Hạo Nhiên's sleeve flicked toward the north exit.

Tân Phong saw the bait and did not chase. He moved halfway, checked the hinge, returned the information.

"False opening."

Thuận adjusted the center without ordering either of them by name.

He moved his own body first, creating room. Tân Thành filled one edge. Tân Phong cut the blind spot. The group formed a shape that did not depend on Thuận's voice.

For three breaths, Hạo Nhiên pressed harder.

Still holding back.

Still enough.

A palm near the western flower. A shoulder toward the open gate. A bead rolled underfoot. A sleeve catch that tempted Thuận to over-return.

He did not.

He let the force die where it stood.

The sixth flower trembled when Hạo Nhiên stopped a finger-width away from it.

No one moved.

The room held.

Only then did Hạo Nhiên lower his hand.

Tân Thành exhaled so hard it sounded like defeat.

Tân Phong sat on the step.

Thuận looked at the six flowers and understood why Lục Hoa kept ledgers of mistakes, not victories.

The flowers were cheap paper.

That was the point.

If they could not protect what was fragile when it did not matter, they would only pretend when it did.

Hạo Nhiên poured the tea at last.

"Now," he said, "we can talk about whether you are allowed to arrive."

Giới Hoa looked like a children's game until it began punishing adult mistakes.

Six markers. Six lanterns. Protect the field.

No order to defeat Hạo Nhiên. No order to escape. No heroic instruction, no clean victory condition. Just a boundary and people inside it who would get hurt if the boundary failed.

Tân Thành guarded the nearest marker like a bodyguard, which meant he lost the far one. Tân Phong calculated routes so quickly that he forgot fear could freeze a civilian in place. Thuận tried to cover everything and discovered that responsibility spread too thin became absence.

Hạo Nhiên took one lantern without striking anyone.

"Dead," he said.

Tân Thành cursed.

"Again."

They reset.

The second attempt failed differently. The third almost worked until Tân Phong chased a fake opening and left a silent corner exposed. The fourth collapsed because Thuận gave an order half a breath late.

By the fifth, they stopped acting like three fighters and began acting like a field.

Tân Thành became pressure, not chase. Tân Phong became sightline, not escape. Thuận became the hinge between them, turning information into motion before it hardened into command.

Hạo Nhiên moved faster then.

For a few seconds, the courtyard became impossible: lantern light, wet tile, breath, sleeve, heel, hand. Not a duel. A system under attack.

When the final lantern remained lit, Thuận understood why Lục Hoa cared about boundaries.

A person who only won fights could still lose everyone behind him.

When the drill ended, Hạo Nhiên asked them which lantern mattered most. Tân Thành said the nearest. Tân Phong said the weakest. Thuận said the one the enemy wanted them to forget. Hạo Nhiên smiled then, not because the answer was complete, but because it was finally moving.

Giới Hoa exposed leadership as a physical flaw.

Thuận had always imagined command as clarity: see the field, make the call, accept the cost. The drill showed him how much vanity hid inside that fantasy. If he centered every decision on himself, the boundary bent toward his attention and broke wherever his pride was not looking.

Hạo Nhiên attacked the neglected places.

Not the strongest guard. Not the loudest mistake. The neglected place.

A lantern behind Tân Phong when he became too clever. A marker near Tân Thành when he chased praise. The corner behind Thuận when he believed understanding the whole field meant he no longer had to check the quiet part.

"Boundary is not control," Hạo Nhiên said after the third failure. "Control asks everything to obey you. Boundary asks what must remain unharmed."

That distinction rewrote the drill.

Thuận stopped commanding every breath. He gave Tân Thành a zone instead of a target. He gave Tân Phong permission to call danger without waiting for confirmation. He kept himself between decisions, not above them.

The field stabilized.

Not perfectly. Lục Hoa did not reward fantasy. They still lost two markers, and Tân Thành still cursed at the air when Hạo Nhiên slipped past him.

But nobody panicked. Nobody chased emptiness. Nobody forgot the lantern behind them.

At the end, sweat ran down Thuận's jaw and his legs shook.

Hạo Nhiên picked up the final lit lantern and placed it in Thuận's hands.

"Protecting the weak is easy to say," he said. "Harder when the weak include the parts of your own team you find inconvenient."

Tân Thành asked what happened if every lantern mattered and they could not protect all six. Hạo Nhiên answered, "Then you choose consciously and mourn honestly." It was the least comforting thing he could have said. It was also the first answer that did not insult the reality of losing.

Thuận carried that answer like a bruise. It did not make him braver. It made him less willing to hide bad choices behind beautiful words.
