Rain's POV :
I lie on my bed, wide awake.
The ceiling above me is dim, washed in the low amber light that never quite turns off in this house. It feels like time doesn't exist here anymore.
Morning and night blur together. Voss left a while ago, but the echo of his voice still lingers in the hallway outside, and somehow that makes everything worse.
I try to close my eyes.
I try to breathe.
But my heart won't slow.
If I close my eyes, I see green.
Jake's green eyes, bright and alive, the last time he smiled.
The way he leaned across the car.
The way he must have looked in that final second.
If I open them, I see blue.
Cold blue. Distant blue.
Dane's eyes the last few days , guarded, unreadable, almost punishing in their silence.
I feel trapped between them.
Between guilt and fear.
Bile rises in my throat, sharp and acidic. I swallow it down.
I count my breaths. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. My fingers grip the sheets beneath me until my knuckles ache.
