Rain's POV:
You want to do a movie night after this?"
I ask, my voice careful, almost hopeful.
Please say yes.
Please look at me.
In that moment, I would have done anything to make him look at me, or maybe even make him smile.
Just so I know everything is okay between us.
But,
Danny doesn't look at me.
He's still standing by the stove, stirring the pasta like it requires his full attention, like if he looks away even for a second something might boil over and ruin everything.
"No, Rain. I've got work to get to," he says flatly.
It shouldn't hurt as much as it does.
But it feels like a blow to the chest.
It lands heavy, like a door quietly shutting.
I nod even though he isn't looking.
"Oh," I say, uselessly.
"Okay."
The kitchen suddenly feels too large.
Or maybe too small.
I can't tell. I look around like there's something else I should do, some role I've forgotten to play.
My hands hover uselessly at my sides.
I didn't mean to get in between.
