Chapter 35: The Straw Hats Stumble Into a Revolutionary Base!
Punk Hazard, The Frozen Lands.
The frigid wind whipped up shards of ice, slashing against their faces like invisible knives.
The Thousand Sunny sat quietly at the edge of the broken ice floes, its hull already coated in a thin layer of frost.
"It's freezing! Why is it so cold here?!"
Nami wrapped her newly bought coat tighter around herself, her teeth chattering uncontrollably.
"The other side was hot as a volcano just a second ago!"
Usopp and Chopper were huddled together in a ball, hiding in the doorway of the cabin with only the tops of their heads peeking out.
"We really are the most wanted of the wanted now!"
Grrr...
A low growl—filled with vitality and wildness—rang out abruptly.
It didn't come from the depths of the island.
It came from beneath their feet.
Everyone stopped what they were doing.
In unison, they turned their gaze toward the bow of the ship.
The Sunny's living lion figurehead was slowly turning its wooden neck. Those eyes, which should have been mere decorations, were now flickering with a spirited light.
It let out a low growl, its massive head pointing straight toward the depths of the island's frozen sector.
In that direction lay nothing but a vast, white expanse of ice.
But the Sunny's roaring grew more urgent.
It was as if it had discovered something there—something that made it feel extremely uneasy, or perhaps... incredibly excited.
"Hey! Sunny! What's wrong?"
Luffy hopped onto the figurehead and patted the lion's mane.
The lion head nuzzled him affectionately but continued to growl low in its throat, eyes fixed on the distance.
Just then, a figure—consisting solely of a lower body—came stumbling and running across the distant ice field.
"Aaaahhhhh! It's just legs! The legs are running!"
Usopp let out a scream that didn't sound human.
"It's a ghost!"
Chopper's eyes looked ready to fly out of his head.
Luffy, however, lit up. He dashed forward and grabbed the pair of running legs.
"So cool! How are you doing that?"
Before he could figure out the mystery of the legs, a group of enormous children came crying and rushing down an icy slope on the other side.
They were dressed in tattered patient gowns, their faces stained with tears and terror.
"Help! Save us!"
"Master is going to catch us!"
"I don't want to eat that candy anymore!"
Nami and Chopper immediately rushed forward to comfort the clearly distressed children.
"Master? Who is that?"
Luffy tilted his head.
One of the older-looking children pointed a trembling finger toward a massive research facility deep within the ice fields.
"He's a demon! He captured us to do experiments!"
"A bad guy?"
Luffy's expression changed instantly.
"I'm gonna go send him flying!"
He was about to charge off when the Sunny's roar became even louder.
"ROAR!"
"Strange. Is there something else over there?"
Franky walked to the bow, inspecting the figurehead. He realized the lion's mood was unstable.
"It seems like he's urging us to go to a different place."
Luffy stopped. He looked at the research facility, then at the direction the Sunny was pointing.
He scratched his head.
"Alright! We'll split into two teams!"
He pointed at the research facility.
"Me, Zoro, Robin, and Usopp! We're going to beat up that bad guy named Caesar!"
Then he pointed in the direction of the Sunny's warning.
"Sanji, Nami, Chopper, and Franky! You guys go see what Sunny found!"
"Aye aye, Captain!"
everyone responded in unison.
Sanji, Nami, Chopper, and Franky ventured deeper into the snowy wasteland, following the direction the Sunny had indicated.
It was a desolate area, littered with the wreckage of buildings destroyed by some past battle.
Eventually, they arrived in front of a research facility that looked like it had been abandoned for years.
The walls were covered in cracks and frost, and the main gate hung precariously from its hinges.
"This place... looks like no one's been here for ages," Nami said, rubbing her arms and looking around uneasily.
"Incorrect."
Franky crouched down, pointing to an extremely well-hidden device in the corner of the doorframe.
"That is the latest model of anti-surveillance Transponder Snail. I just saw it in the tech section of the newspaper last week."
Sanji exhaled a ring of smoke. He took the lead, pushing open the heavy doors of the facility.
A stale, moldy smell hit them immediately.
The interior was a mess, with scattered instruments and documents everywhere.
However, on the floor, they could see a clear set of footprints leading deeper inside.
"Someone is active here," Sanji said, his voice low.
They made their way inward, passing through dark corridors. Finally, in the deepest part of the facility, they found a hidden room reinforced with lead plates.
Franky used his tools to pry the door open.
The furnishings inside were eerily simple.
A table, a chair.
And sitting on the table, a peculiar-looking black Transponder Snail.
"This is..."
Nami stepped forward. By the light of her flashlight, she saw an inconspicuous brand stamped on the corner of the table.
It was the symbol of a dragon's claw.
"The mark of the Revolutionary Army!"
"What? The Revolutionaries?"
Sanji and Franky were startled simultaneously.
"Why would the Revolutionary Army set up a secret base here?"
"Luffy's dad... what are his people doing here?"
"It's too weird! This is supposed to be Emperor Kaido's territory!"
"Do they have a deal with Kaido?"
"Impossible! Absolutely impossible!"
Meanwhile, in an unknown stretch of the New World.
A Sea King, large enough to rival a small island, was breaking through the waves at high speed.
On top of its head, Garp sat in a beach chair, leisurely munching on rice crackers.
He pulled a Vivre Card from his pocket.
The corner of the paper pointed steadily in one direction.
Punk Hazard.
"Dragon, that brat," Garp mumbled, tossing a cracker into his mouth.
"To think he'd pick a godforsaken dump like this for our meeting."
"Though, it happens to be on the way."
He stood up, stretched his back, and patted the Sea King's head with his foot.
"Hurry up. I'm going to miss dinner."
Punk Hazard, The Abandoned Lab.
Inside the hidden room, the silence was absolute.
Puru Puru Puru...
Puru Puru Puru...
Without warning, the black Transponder Snail on the table began to ring.
The shrill sound exploded in the sealed room like a thunderclap.
The four Straw Hats held their breath instantly.
The Transponder Snail's eyes opened. Its mouth opened and closed, mimicking the shape of a person's lips.
A steady, calm voice—one that carried a hint of familiarity—came through the speaker.
"This is Sabo. What is the situation?"
