The moment students arrived at Caelan's shop, their eyes immediately locked onto the wooden menu board above the counter—or rather, the three "new" games listed on it.
"Are these new releases? I haven't seen you bring them out at the academy."
"Salamander just came out yesterday. Super Mario and Tank Battle launched on the first day of break last week."
"Why can't I understand the plot? What's a 'hyperspace cosmos cruiser'?"
"Just think of it as something from another plane of existence. Living conditions are different in each plane."
Way too many people showed up. Not just from his class—students from neighboring classes had heard the news too. Fortunately, after watching and trying out the games, the ones with coin bought their favorites and headed home to play. Some students who'd bought Elemental Contra before the holiday came specifically to show off their skills after three days of practice. Caelan could only shake his head with a smile and let them have their fun.
During lunch, he gave gaming tips to the players. The hidden green mushroom in Super Mario's first level. The item functions in Tank Battle. Players were happy. Spectators were happy. This was an entertainment mode that had never existed before, and the novelty alone was incredibly attractive.
Some newcomers to Tank Battle really enjoyed the custom map mode. But the most popular game was still Elemental Contra. And just like on Earth, the most popular power-up was the Wind orb—the S-bullet. Even though his stick figure testers had continuously balanced all five elemental orbs, Wind was still the go-to pick because it was easiest to use.
The Earth orb could block most enemy ranged attacks—like fireballs—but had to travel along the ground. The Water icicle could slow enemies, but wasn't very useful on lower difficulties. The Fire orb had a slightly smaller attack range. The Lightning orb had the strongest single-target damage but a much longer cooldown between shots.
While Caelan happily watched his mana reserves grow, time passed.
After seeing Ella off for the evening, he closed the shop, returned to his room, and pulled out an unengraved size 6 runestone tablet. Time to engrave the game he'd finished that afternoon.
His vision went black. Caelan nearly collapsed onto the bed.
When he recovered, the mana in his body was almost completely depleted. The runestone tablet in his hand had shattered into pieces.
It failed.
Caelan grabbed a mana crystal and started recovering while reflecting on what went wrong. Too many modifications. His mana had increased so quickly lately that he'd gotten cocky. He'd improved the game's graphics, and while everything worked fine in his mind palace, the moment he tried to materialize it, his mana was completely insufficient.
Looking closer at his modified Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles... you couldn't say it was vastly different from the original, but it was almost unrecognizable.
First, the plot.
Caelan set the story in the Chaos Lands—a region in the center of the continent. The area was as large as two or three Moonwatch Empire territories but contained hundreds of "countries." Most weren't recognized by the Six Great Empires. To the east and south lay the Elven Forest. Southwest were the Dwarven Hills. Northwest was the Phoenix Empire. Directly north and northeast were the Shatuo nations. Due to various factors, the place was synonymous with chaos.
In a city called New York in the Chaos Lands, a powerful individual named Shredder ruled brutally over this city-state. Shredder wasn't just strong himself—he possessed a special ability to bestow beast transformations on others. He and his beast-men subordinates jointly exploited the people, turning anyone who dared resist into weak small animals.
Five warriors who once opposed Shredder were permanently transformed into five pet green-shelled tortoises. However, the castle maid April accidentally touched the five tortoises and unexpectedly partially dispelled Shredder's magic, transforming them into five humanoid tortoise warriors.
Shredder discovered April's special ability and ordered his subordinates to imprison her for research. The five tortoise-men who escaped the castle decided to resist Shredder again—to overthrow his tyranny, fully restore their human forms, and rescue April.
With Caelan's creativity, this was about the best story he could weave. The four turtles became five warriors, each representing an elemental system. No choice there—this world had five elemental schools, and leaving one out would be unreasonable.
Leader Leonardo: Dual swords, Wind element, balanced character. Blood-consuming ultimate: "Whirlwind Slash"—the original sword-spinning attack with added storm effects.
Second Brother Raphael: Dual sai, Lightning element, fast attack speed but small range. Blood-consuming ultimate: "Electric Poison Dragon Drill"—the original with lightning effects and a half-second paralyze.
Third Brother Michelangelo: Nunchaku, Earth element, high damage and fast speed but with recovery lag. Blood-consuming ultimate: "Collapsing Mountain Wild Dance"—Bruce Lee-style nunchaku spinning while slowly moving forward. Theoretically the strongest character but also the hardest to control.
Fourth Brother Donatello: Long staff, Water element, slow attack speed but wide range. Blood-consuming ultimate: "Surging Flood Dragon Staff"—flips forward with a dragon-shaped water pillar surging after, attacking and knocking enemies away.
Fifth Brother Picasso: One-handed sword, Fire element, balanced character. Blood-consuming ultimate: "Bursting Flame"—fires a giant fireball that explodes on impact, causing secondary damage.
Level 1: Riverbank (the Chaos Lands aren't near the sea). Escaping the castle sewers to the river, the five tortoise warriors begin their revenge. End boss: Rhinoceros-man Rocksteady—uses repeating crossbow, charge attack, and side kick.
Level 2: River and Cargo Ship. Mini-bosses: two flying monsters. End boss: Red Bull Grand Chuck—strong arm punches, three-hit charge, attacks with a large iron pillar.
Level 3: Bridge. Mini-boss: Spiked Tortoise Slash—sword attacks, jumps to avoid and counterattack, special move retracts into shell and crashes around like a top. End boss: Wild Boar Bebop—attacks with chained ball overhead, wide attack range. Getting close risks getting kicked then hit with the chain.
Level 4: Castle Outskirts. Mole-man Traag—attacks with mining pickaxe in continuous strikes. Special attack: fan-shaped sound wave.
Level 5: Castle Sewers. Mini-boss: Giant Rat (originally a grunt in a mech, officially called the Mouser Mother). End boss: Alligator Man Leatherhead—fires three Wind Blades in a fan shape. Takes damage, quickly counterattacks with tail whip. Low health triggers grab attack that drains massive HP.
Level 6: Inside Castle. Mini-boss: Werewolf Azar—fast claw strikes, dash claws, spits freezing breath that immobilizes before following with claws. End boss: Shredder (normal state)—sword attacks with fast speed, can throw, agile with flying kicks, wall-jumps into rebound flying kicks, can block attacks (newly added). Extremely difficult.
Level 7: Castle Rooftop. End boss: Alligator Snapping Turtle Tokka—pounces and bites, blocks flying kicks with shield (all flying kicks ineffective). After high-speed rush, quickly punches. Spiked back means flying kicks from behind deal rebound damage (newly added).
Level 8: Castle Secret Passage and Lord's Hall. Mini-bosses: Two flying monsters (from level 2) and Giant Rat (from level 5). Mid-boss: Alien monster Krang—fire and lightning attacks (originally missiles). Body splits at will, launches fists that return (newly added). Upper and lower body attack separately—upper half smashes with giant hammer, lower half dashes with continuous kicks. Brief invincibility after recombining at low health.
Final boss: Shredder (Ultimate Form)—all difficult attacks plus fan-shaped Wind Blades, lightning summons that chase players, forward fireballs, freezing breath, ground shake (newly added, similar to a famous fighting game bug). Can temporarily turn players back into small tortoises. Afterimage teleportation.
Player Character Enhancements:
Flexibility and control greatly improved. Double-tap direction for running. Running attacks added. Starting lives: 5. Starting health: 100 points. Reaching certain scores permanently increases max health to 300 points.
Enemy count doubled on screen. Boss health comparable to American version, relatively strengthened. All boss melee attacks more diverse with stronger aggression.
Health item frequency increased: Apples restore 15%, sundaes 25%, beef burgers 50%, pizzas 100%.
The game was now called "Chronicle of the Fierce Tortoise Warriors." Difficulty split into Normal and Expert. Expert mode: greatly improved enemy AI and aggression, all codes removed. Two-player co-op supported.
This was fully suitable as an arcade game, and this was Caelan compressing content as much as possible. For example, he'd initially designed complex combo systems for each character—similar to certain beat-'em-ups—but adding those increased animation frames. Each enemy needed hit reactions too, which ballooned the file size. If he really wanted to make it as rich as possible, engraving it anytime soon would be impossible.
The runestone tablet was easy to solve—if size 6 didn't work, switch to size 7 or 8. The key issue was his mana supply couldn't keep up.
After checking his current mana levels and factoring in his growth rate, he should be able to upload the current version in a few days. Worst case, he'd use a size 7 tablet.
During those few days, besides peacefully enjoying mana feedback from players, Caelan could let the stick figure testers in his mind palace spend more time testing and refining the game. After all, those testers never experienced boredom or frustration. They were incredibly useful.
