Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Kujou Takayuki

Kannazuka Island, the camp established by the Shogunate Army: Kujou Garrison.

Inside one of the casualty rooms at the camp, there were countless wounded soldiers lying on hospital beds.

Many medical staff were also busy treating the wounded.

Kujou Sara was among them, lying on a bed near the edge.

At a certain moment, her eyes moved, and she slowly opened them.

She looked at the familiar ceiling, then at the surrounding environment, observing the Shogunate Army casualties and medical staff.

She slowly sat up, looking somewhat confused, and clutched her head:

"Wasn't I captured and imprisoned by the resistance?"

Kujou Sara's awakening immediately drew the attention of the medical staff.

"Ah! General Kujou! You're awake!"

Kujou Sara glanced at the medical staff and asked, "What happened? How did you manage to rescue us?"

Since they had been defeated earlier, and now she woke up back in her own camp.

Kujou Sara naturally assumed the Shogunate Army had rescued her.

The medical staff member paused for a moment before replying:

"The resistance did not imprison the defeated personnel of our army. Instead, they left our soldiers on the battlefield and even sent an envoy to remind us to carry the people back..."

Hearing this, Kujou Sara was visibly stunned for a moment, asking in confusion:

"What are they planning... They won, yet they let us return?"

The medical staff member looked completely baffled:

"We don't know either... When the resistance envoy came over, we were all confused. It took a considerable amount of manpower to carry the wounded back..."

Kujou Sara fell silent, her brows tightly furrowed.

She clearly didn't understand the reason for the resistance's actions—was it overconfidence, completely disregarding the Shogunate Army?

Or was there some other reason?

Regardless, this didn't change the fact that the Shogunate Army had suffered a major defeat.

Thinking of this, Kujou Sara sighed softly.

She got out of bed and stretched her body. Although she still had some injuries, normal movement was no problem.

"General Kujou, your injuries haven't fully healed yet. It's not advisable to get out of bed..." the nearby medical staff member reminded her.

Kujou Sara shook her head, "It's fine, don't worry about me."

Having said that, she left the room and stepped outside, looking up at the dazzling sunlight in the sky.

She then looked back at the room filled with the wounded.

Kujou Sara recalled the scene of their previous defeat and sighed softly:

"The Yellow Fox has joined the resistance. What will become of Inazuma in the future..."

At that moment, a Shogunate Guard soldier suddenly walked over and urgently said:

"General Kujou! You're awake! Lord Kujou previously instructed that as soon as you woke up, you should see him immediately! Lord Kujou is currently in the main camp hall."

The Lord Kujou mentioned here is the head of the Kujou Clan, the leader of the Tenryou Commission, Kujou Takayuki.

It could be said that within Inazuma, few people held more power than he did.

Kujou Sara thought for a moment, then nodded: "The Family Head is looking for me... I understand."

Afterward, Kujou Sara headed alone toward the location of the main camp hall.

Upon entering the main camp, she saw the aforementioned Kujou Takayuki.

He was a highly authoritative elder.

Arriving before Kujou Takayuki, Kujou Sara lowered her head: "Family Head."

Kujou Takayuki put down the documents in his hand, looked at Kujou Sara, and spoke calmly in a gentle tone:

"Sara, what exactly happened during the battle at Nazuchi Beach? Why did our Tenryou Commission deploy a thousand soldiers, led by you, only to still be defeated?"

"Could it be that the resistance used some underhanded, malicious scheme?"

Hearing this, Kujou Sara lowered her head again and said:

"No... Family Head, we didn't lose to the resistance; we lost to one person—The Person Wearing the Yellow Fox Mask."

Unexpectedly, as soon as she spoke, Kujou Takayuki, who had been gentle moments before, suddenly slapped the table and stood up in a rage:

"Nonsense! Sara, Sara! Haven't I taught you this many times? If you fail, you fail!"

"You must face failure directly, without making excuses for it!"

"Losing to the resistance is not something to be ashamed of, but you are actually fabricating such an excuse now! Do you think I'm so senile that I would believe such a thing?!"

Kujou Sara's expression was complicated as she explained:

"Family Head, I am not lying about this matter, nor would I make excuses for failure."

Kujou Takayuki still didn't believe her, waved his sleeve, and snorted coldly:

"That's enough! You must have just woken up and your mind isn't clear yet. Go rest properly. I will lecture you once you've recovered!"

Kujou Sara showed hesitation, but ultimately sighed, said nothing, and quietly left.

Because she also knew that such an unbelievable truth was indeed difficult for others to accept.

Not until Kujou Sara walked out of the main camp.

Kujou Takayuki sat back down in his seat, his face turning extremely grim.

In fact, Kujou Takayuki had already learned from other awakened casualties that the Yellow Fox alone had defeated a thousand Shogunate Army soldiers.

But Kujou Takayuki was still unable to accept such an absurd fact.

He kept reassuring himself, telling himself that the soldiers, unwilling to accept defeat, had temporarily fabricated a lie that no one would believe.

That is why, after Kujou Sara woke up, Kujou Takayuki questioned her personally.

After all, Kujou Sara was the most loyal and outspoken person in the Kujou Clan; she would absolutely not lie.

But... the information he received from Kujou Sara was exactly the same... At this point, even if Kujou Takayuki couldn't accept the truth in his heart, he had no choice but to accept it... At this moment, Kujou Takayuki's face was slightly pale.

"Damn it, what is the deal with that Yellow Fox? Coming to the Tenryou Commission and causing a scene, making the Kujou Clan lose face, was bad enough."

"Now he's joined the resistance... He intends to completely oppose our Kujou Clan!"

Smack!

Kujou Takayuki angrily slammed the table.

"And those cowardly Fatui too! They clearly promised to provide aid to the Kujou Clan!"

"But because of the Yellow Fox incident, they vanished without a trace!"

In fact, the Kujou Clan had long been colluding with the Fatui.

Kujou Takayuki, for the sake of the clan's interests, agreed to the Fatui's demands and accepted their aid.

The condition, naturally, was to help promote the execution of the Vision Hunt Decree.

Without the assistance of the Kujou Clan, the Vision Hunt Decree could never have been implemented so smoothly.

Furthermore, many incidents that occurred during the Vision Hunt Decree, as well as the voices of resistance from the people of Inazuma, were not truthfully reported by Kujou Takayuki to the Raiden Shogun.

It could be said he was deceiving his superiors and oppressing his subordinates.

And Kujou Takayuki did such things merely for the benefit of his own clan!
