Chapter 123: Agriculture Research Frequently Uses Quarters and Years as Time Units

"Teacher, I thought you would be furious and fight Lady Tsunade," Kenichi said as he watched Orochimaru walking ahead.

After all, his teacher had seen that book, and he had also learned from Asuma who gave it to him. Tsunade.

To be honest, it would have been easier to understand if Orochimaru had stormed over and given Tsunade a brutal beating. That would have been a very direct, very Orochimaru kind of reaction.

Instead, Orochimaru had helped Tsunade confront her hemophobia.

That genuinely surprised Kenichi.

Still, Kenichi was not completely clueless. He understood his teacher's thoughts, at least a little. Orochimaru looked strict and cold most of the time, but there was a gentler side buried underneath.

When Orochimaru told Kenichi to find two living ninjas, Kenichi had already considered that possibility. When Orochimaru had Nawaki stab Tsunade in the stomach, Kenichi became even more certain.

If Orochimaru truly wanted to punish Tsunade severely, or even kill her, he had countless ways to do it. He did not.

He chose to have Nawaki use a kunai.

A kunai could be lethal, of course, but Nawaki's strength was not great. It pierced the skin and got caught in Tsunade's muscle. To Tsunade, that kind of damage was basically nothing.

"Tsunade did not do it on purpose," Orochimaru said calmly, his expression unchanged. "I do not casually vent my anger on others. That is a sign of incompetence."

Kenichi clicked his tongue.

Not intentional. Not taking it out on others.

They were good principles, sure, but they also meant Orochimaru already had a target in mind.

Which raised an obvious question.

If Orochimaru was not going to vent on the innocent Tsunade, then who was he going to vent on?

Of course.

That white haired man.

Kenichi sighed inwardly, silently hoping Jiraiya would not die too tragically. Then he remembered the manuscripts Jiraiya was still holding, and the hope dropped a little.

When the second part of that so called masterpiece came out, Orochimaru's anger would climb even higher. Jiraiya's book had basically turned into a pile of kindling stacked at Orochimaru's feet.

The more it piled up, the more terrifying the explosion would be later.

It was hard to imagine what would happen when Jiraiya finally ran into his teacher again.

"Pain spoke to me before," Orochimaru said as they walked.

Kenichi immediately shoved the weird thoughts aside and looked at him seriously. Orochimaru did not bring up trivial things for fun.

"He told me what you said to him earlier," Orochimaru continued. "What are your thoughts on improving crops?"

Orochimaru kept a leisurely pace, occasionally glancing at Kenichi as he spoke.

"Teacher, this is what I am thinking. We can improve the genes of crops, and then…" Kenichi explained his idea briefly.

Truthfully, Kenichi had not done deep agricultural research. He did not study agriculture in college.

But like the saying goes, even if you have never eaten pork, you have seen pigs run.

Then again, when he thought about it, a lot of people these days had eaten pork their whole lives and still never actually saw a pig run.

Even so, Kenichi did know enough to talk about it. In the ninja world, that alone probably made him count as an expert.

"Your idea is not wrong," Orochimaru said after listening. "And it is correct to entrust repetitive, time consuming work to shadow clones. The only thing you need to pay attention to is…"

Orochimaru began giving him advice.

Kenichi listened carefully.

He did not get arrogant just because he happened to know something about the topic. Compared to him, Orochimaru was the real genius, someone who researched and mastered enormous fields from scratch.

In his previous life, Orochimaru would have been called an academician.

After they returned to the experimental base, Kenichi purchased the remaining meteorites. While smelting them, he also had his shadow clones research crop improvement.

He watched rice grains transform from seeds into ears of rice.

Half a year passed in the blink of an eye.

"The chakra pressure bomb is done," Kenichi muttered, staring at himself in the mirror. He touched the stubble on his chin, then casually shaved it off with a ninja sword. "But I did not expect it has been over a year since I left Konoha."

More than a year had passed since Jiraiya blocked the lab door and forced him out.

Kenichi had adapted to his current life.

When he had nothing to do, he did research, studied genetically modified crops, and tried to fuse chakra with thermobaric explosives.

He nearly blew up the lab several times.

In the end, his teacher could not take it anymore and outright forbade any research on thermobaric explosives inside the lab, which finally stopped Kenichi from turning the place into a crater.

Six months had passed, and his biggest achievement was that the laboratory was finally completed today.

Was finishing a lab in six months fast or slow?

Kenichi felt it was pretty fast. Once construction truly started, he realized how many flaws he had. He wanted to modify this, reinforce that, adjust another thing, then redo what he had just approved.

The construction period stretched longer because of it, but he was not in a hurry.

And honestly, half a year was still fast. In his previous life, digging a laboratory into mountains was painful, and there were too many things to consider.

Fortunately, this was the ninja world.

Ninjutsu solved a major problem.

[You now have your own fully fledged laboratory. Rewards: Design drawings for a uranium ore detection device and a uranium 235 refining device.]

Kenichi froze.

Good heavens. He did not expect the reward to be this.

Blueprint rewards were not new. He had received thermobaric weapon design drawings before, so it was not shocking for uranium related blueprints to appear now.

Still…

"Wait. Is this that targeted?" Kenichi rubbed his temples, feeling both amused and exasperated.

He had nothing to say about a device specifically for detecting uranium ore.

But a uranium 235 refining device?

What exactly was this trying to push him toward?

Uranium 235 sounded harmless if you did not know it. Once refined, though, it became one of the main materials used in atomic bombs.

"So you want me to hand craft an atomic bomb?" Kenichi stared at the two design drawings, a thousand complaints lining up in his throat. "Are thermobaric weapons not enough anymore?"

He paused.

Then he frowned, even more irritated with himself.

"But why am I even more excited?"
