Chapter 106: Third Uncle Comes to Repair the Door!
"Has Teacher left?"
When Kenichi came out with the thermobaric explosives, the laboratory was already empty. Orochimaru was nowhere to be seen.
Kenichi did not dwell on it. His teacher was a ninja, after all. It was normal for him to vanish from time to time to handle his own matters.
Compared to that, Kenichi was far more eager to see what would happen when the thermobaric explosives in his hands fused with chakra.
Of course, he could not conduct this research inside the laboratory. If he blew the place up again, all his money would end up going into repairs, and that would be a disaster.
So Kenichi left the base, found a secluded valley with a lake, and prepared to begin his experiment there.
"My chakra nature is lightning and fire… but after learning nature transformation, changing attributes shouldn't be a problem." Kenichi pulled out his experiment logbook and steadied his breathing. He intended to record everything carefully, even if he did not yet know when the data would become useful.
He had prepared twenty portions of thermobaric explosives, each one exactly one hundred grams. The measurements were precise, minimizing the impact of weight differences between samples.
With the mass fixed, any changes caused by chakra attributes would be far easier to observe. It was, in its own way, a controlled variable method.
[After Lightning Release chakra from Chidori was introduced into Sample 1, the explosive properties became extremely unstable, triggering a powerful detonation almost immediately upon chakra fusion.]
As Kenichi watched his third uncle come to repair the door, he casually wrote down the next line as well.
[Power is significantly increased compared to ordinary thermobaric explosives. A large amount of electrical discharge can be detected on the Rashomon monitoring device.]
Kenichi frowned.
Lightning chakra and thermobaric explosives did not work well together. Instead of stabilizing, the chakra behaved like a fuse. The explosion also carried a strong electrical discharge, but the practical value of that effect was limited.
After all, a monster that could withstand a thermobaric blast head on would probably treat an electric shock at this level like a muscle massage.
He moved on to the next sample without hesitation.
[Sample 2 infused with Fire Release chakra. Fire Release chakra is unstable, similar to Lightning Release chakra. Violent detonation triggered upon contact with thermobaric explosives.]
[Damage to Rashomon is more severe than Sample 1. Fire attribute chakra appears to amplify explosive effect, or chakra fusion causes the thermobaric reaction to become more violent.]
Kenichi rolled his neck, letting out a slow breath.
Fortunately, he had learned Summoning Technique: Rashomon from Orochimaru. It was a defensive summon, and a very specialized one. It was not as flexible as other summons, but it was still extremely useful for absorbing the aftermath of dangerous tests like this.
"The fusion of chakra really isn't that easy," Kenichi muttered.
Still, he was not discouraged. He continued testing, one sample at a time, even as the results stayed frustrating.
Water Release chakra was completely useless. It only soaked the mixture, forcing him to dry it out and remake the explosive.
Earth Release chakra reduced the blast strength. It added grit and weight, but the effect was not significant enough to matter.
Yang Release chakra had no visible effect at all, at least not one Kenichi could observe with his current setup.
Wind Release, however, surprised him.
It dispersed the explosive mixture slightly, yet at the same time, it accelerated the detonation process.
Kenichi fell silent, thinking hard.
It was clear that water and earth were useless for now. Wind, lightning, and fire could all enhance something, but each came with problems. Stability was the wall he kept smashing into.
Combining explosives and chakra while keeping the whole thing stable was not something he could brute force in a single afternoon.
"Let's try Sage Mode."
Kenichi adjusted his breathing, entered Sage Mode, and let Sage Chakra circulate. The change was immediate. The properties of his chakra became sharper, heavier, more oppressive.
When lightning attribute Sage Chakra was infused, the thermobaric explosive erupted with crackling arcs of lightning at the moment of detonation.
When fire attribute Sage Chakra was infused, the blast power multiplied several times over.
It even blew a hole through Rashomon.
This was only one hundred grams of thermobaric explosive. Rashomon's defense was notoriously strong, yet it still got punched through.
Kenichi's eyes lit up.
So fire chakra really did enhance the thermobaric explosion. The amplification was real.
The problem was the instability. That part still refused to cooperate.
Wind was another story.
Wind increased the diffusion speed several times over. Conventional thermobaric explosives had a detonation and dispersal speed roughly half that of conventional high explosives, but wind chakra dramatically accelerated the spread.
That was both good and bad.
A faster spread meant enemies outside would have less time to react and defend. It also strengthened the shockwave effect.
But it also shortened the time required to form a vacuum, which could reduce the duration of the suffocating aftermath.
Every advantage came with a cost.
"So theoretically, the best solution is a combination of fire, wind, and lightning," Kenichi said, pinching the bridge of his nose. "That should produce the greatest power and the strongest effect."
But saying it was easy.
Doing it was another matter entirely.
Could ninjutsu be fused? Yes. Fused techniques existed, but they were famously difficult.
Jiraiya's Sage Art: Goemon was powerful, but it required three users and was not a true fusion technique inside one body, at least in Kenichi's eyes.
If he had to name someone who embodied true fusion, it would be Hashirama.
Earth and water, combined into Wood Release.
Everyone understood the concept. The real problem was always the same.
How did you integrate different attributes without the whole thing tearing itself apart?
"This is difficult…" Kenichi murmured. Then his eyes narrowed slightly. "But maybe I can avoid true fusion."
He could use containers.
If he stored chakra separately, then placed those containers inside the thermobaric explosive, detonating all three at the same time might achieve a similar effect without forcing the attributes to merge into one stable state.
He had considered this before. Integrating chakra directly into explosives was too hard, but perfection was not required. Even if the solution was messy, even if it was like a mountain of code, as long as it ran, it counted.
Kenichi packed up the remaining thermobaric explosives.
He already had an idea, but there was another problem.
There were not many materials that could hold chakra reliably.
Chakra metal was the best choice, but it was expensive.
Could he try detonation tags instead?
The ninja world had many combined techniques, from Sage Art: Goemon to large scale cooperative ninjutsu used by shinobi alliances. But those methods required chakra to be fused inside the body first.
Kenichi stared at the sealed pack in his hands, thinking quietly.
If he wanted to replicate a fusion effect without true fusion, what container would actually work best?
