Chapter 49 - The Birth of a Blood Bridge

Driven mad with rage once she finished reading, she slammed her desk, breaking it once again.

« Calm down, Yumiel. » Jack said.

« CALM DOWN?, fuck, if you only knew how badly I want to go kill those assholes! »

Yumiel quickly cooled off; she had already accepted that some people called her a monster, but she refused to be one completely, so slapping a label on her like that drove her into a blind rage. Jack, for his part, grew more determined in his idea of finding allies, or new teammates.

Yumiel went into the living room, quietly waiting for Poppy to finish cooking, relaxing by playing with her blood, while Jack sat down on the couch, thinking calmly.

Poppy eventually brought the food to the table; she had prepared a pork roast with potatoes. Jack and Yumiel sat down to eat. Marie was already there, throwing herself at the food. Yumiel ate slowly, as if lost in her thoughts. Jack finished quickly and went back to Yumiel's bedroom.

At the table, only Marie, Yumiel, and Poppy remained. Hesitant, Poppy asked Yumiel a question.

« I wanted to thank you for your generosity, thank you for welcoming me. I'd like to ask about this little one, is she your sister? »

Yumiel finished calmly, letting a long silence settle before answering.

« Do you remember my answer about what I am? »

« Yes, of course. » Poppy said, not knowing where she was going with this.

« One more question like that and you're out. »

Timing worked out well; Yumiel's phone started ringing. Yumiel hurried to grab it, seeing "Dad" on the screen, answering and heading into the living room.

« Hello, Dad. »

« Yumiel, I'm glad to hear you. Your mother is next to me, did you see the statement from the Coalition of the New World? »

« Yes, I saw it, why? »

« Just like that. Your mother and I are in a bunker; we can only call once a day and only for a limited time. Stay well hidden in the house and don't go out, we'll be back within a week. »

« Wait, Dad! Do you happen to know where Mathis and Morgan are? They're not answering anymore, it worries me. »

« I'll check. Your mother and I send you our love. I'll also send you the number of a friend—if you have a problem or if you're in danger, call him. »

Suddenly there was a pause, then a man's voice was heard, before her mother took the phone back.

« Know that we love you, my darling. »

The call cut off right after. Yumiel looked at her phone as a message appeared with a number and no name next to it. Yumiel took a piece of paper and wrote the number down, then saved it afterward.

Then she sighed. Marie, once she had finished eating, ran over to Yumiel, signing that she needed a bath—and that she did too.

« Pocahontas, we're going to the bath, you can join us if you want. »

Poppy, surprised at first by Yumiel's proposal, accepted. Yumiel kicked Jack out of the bedroom, and all three of them undressed and got into the bathtub, just big enough to hold the three of them.

Once finished, Yumiel lent a pajama to Poppy and a new one to Marie. Yumiel started the washing machine and put back on her same old pajama.

As usual, Yumiel put Marie to bed, who fell asleep within a few minutes. Poppy just watched the scene, saying nothing.

Looking for her scientific notebook, Yumiel noticed it was no longer on the bed. Leaving the bedroom, she saw Jack reading her scientific notebook, slowly turning the pages.

Interested, Yumiel waited for long minutes, arms crossed, leaning against the wall. Once Jack had time to leaf through it properly, she walked over to him.

« Despite your intellectual deficiency, did you manage to understand anything? »

Jack answered Yumiel while continuing to flip through it.

« Not really, I understood some principles, it's really complex. However, there's one I find really interesting, look. »

Jack handed the notebook to Yumiel, showing a thesis.

« You called this: Blood as a biological quantum network. I didn't understand everything, but it talks about being able to connect two places with your blood, something like that? »

Yumiel reread her thesis.

« Yes, I remember now, but it seemed surreal to me. »

« I think it's pretty good—if you've got nothing to do, try it, you've got nothing to lose, and it's better than overthinking with your notebook or amusing yourself by controlling your blood. »

Yumiel began to think about finishing her thesis, while Jack went back to the bedroom, joining Poppy who had stayed there.

Writing her thesis for many hours, she eventually recited it out loud once finished.

« My blood agent can synchronize with other masses of blood. One could say it possesses a biological antenna. By the same token, it shares the same structure. So if I create two pools of blood, since they share the same structure, one could say I create a quantum network. »

Yumiel turned the page of her notebook.

« This can give rise to the idea of a bridge that connects them. Now, if I add a topology—in other words, a way of folding space allowing me to link two distant surfaces through a change in geometry. Like a wormhole, but in a bio-organic version. »

Yumiel turned the second-to-last page of her thesis.

« If I connect the biological antennas, it will fold space between two pools, and thus create an ultra-short path between them. Exactly like passing through an invincible corridor. Allowing me, normally, to emerge on the other side of the pool. »

Yumiel turned the last page.

« Conclusion, to go from point A to point B: I must synchronize my blood, which I activate like a biological quantum field. The two pools thus become two points of the same biological continuum. Allowing me to enter one pool and emerge from the other. »

Yumiel rejoiced in her new thesis; all that remained was to experiment. She believed in it, yet she doubted inwardly—if it worked, it would be completely insane.
