Chapter 46 - Chapter 11.1 - Red Laughter

Deep within the forests of Galion, endless pines created a shadowed overcast. Light only poured in rare beams through the canopy.

Scattered throughout the dirt were the countless bodies of Memento soldiers—littering the blood soaked soil. Trees dripped crimson, with bark cracked from impact. Masks were scattered, and weapons shattered. Only one soldier remained alive.

A young Memento scout, barely older than twenty, staggered backwards. His breaths were rapid and shallow. A torn cloak remained suited by a thread, with his shoulders showing deep gashes. He was armed with a dagger, but the tremble of his hand made it impossible to wield.

"No… no, no, no… they're all… gone," he muttered.

A chilling sound rose from behind him—laughter. A playful and maniacal giggle. It echoed through the trees, bouncing from every branch.

The soldier spun around, trying to spot the source. Then, branches snapped. A figure dashed like a blur between the trunks.

He dropped down from the trees like a beast descending on its prey. His feet landed softly in the bloodied dirt—his body still, except for his face.

A wild, twisted grin from ear-to-ear. Crimson eyes tore into the lone soldier's soul. His veins pulsed, awaiting their newest victim.

"You poor soul…" Chaze mocked. "I'm so very sorry."

The scout shook, stumbling backwards. His dagger rose but all the same.

"I… I won't let you kill anyone else!" he shouted in a burst of confidence.

Chaze chuckled, before vanishing into thin air. A flash of red mist left in his wake, before he reappeared right behind the scout. A low whisper left his mouth in a venomous tone.

"Oh? What chance does a child like you stand against the strongest ability-user in Alden?"

The boy didn't turn, his breath only grew heavier.

"That title isn't yours, and never will be. I'm looking forward to the day he ends your pitiful life."

Chaze's eyes twitched at the remark. Then he laughed. A loud, uncaring laugh that felt ungodly.

"The Ghost… I presume? Tona Norasachi? Memento's golden boy… don't worry. He'll break. Soon enough too. Everything that boy cares for will be stripped… and then he'll be all alone—waiting for his death!"

Before the scout could blink, a blood tendril pierced his back, exiting with a spray of red.

"Until then," Chaze whispered, "keep sending more soldiers to their doom… keep building my strength with their blood, Maro! You two, the heart and soul of Memento…"

The tendril retracted slowly, and Chaze brought it to his tongue and licked.

"Without the heart, the body rots."

He raised his arms, and a swirl of blood formed around him. He disappeared into the vortex, managing one more line.

"Memento's time is coming to an end."

Elsewhere, the sun rose gently over the reborn district of Persetta. What was once the example of the APC's tyranny now bloomed with new life.

Judgment Squad exited their carriage, rubbing their sore backs and stiff joints.

"That ride was far too long…" Tsuki said, stretching her arms out.

Geo had an annoyed look on his face. "You're telling me! A ten hour ride for one that should've taken six!"

"Driver just wanted to take the scenic route," laughed Knoxx. He didn't seem bothered by the time—likely because he slept the entire ride.

Danzo chuckled. "You five go rest up. I'll give the report to Maro."

"You're an angel!" Azumi beamed.

Danzo rubbed the back of his head with a tiny smirk. "I try."

With that, Judgment split off, giving a wave to their superior as they strolled down their home district.

The streets of Persetta stretched before them. It was bustling—the new usual. Children chased one another while builders worked on new homes. Market stalls and shops were crowded, debuting the rich smell of bread and coin.

"The people really believe in us, now," said Geo, giving a genuine smile. "The aid from Galion, Zimala and Jon have really helped Persetta rebuild."

"And for once, it doesn't matter who you are. Solena user or not, here you can truly live," Azumi added.

Hatori raised his head, watching a group of children help an elderly woman carry baskets of fruit.

"No fear in their eyes. Not anymore, at least."

"Let's keep it that way," Tsuki determined, before excitedly jogging down the street.

Geo raised a hand to halt, but didn't get through. Instead, he chased after her. Knoxx and Azumi just watched, giving each other knowing looks.
