Chapter 41 - Chapter 41 — Watching the Show

All eyes converged on one spot.

A handsome young man with dark brown hair—Prince Baird—was escorting a gorgeously dressed girl. Instead of descending the stairs, the two stopped midway, standing above everyone like actors on a stage awaiting applause.

Those at the front quickly recognized the girl beside Prince Baird, and shock rippled through the crowd.

This was supposed to be an ordinary academy ball. Yet the pair appeared in extravagant attire, radiating an atmosphere that was anything but ordinary. Many attendees immediately sensed something was about to happen—and quietly waited to watch.

Only Michelle stood in the corner whispering rapid explanations to Ron.

"The girl beside His Highness Baird is Miss Julie Eugene. For him to enter with her like this… this could cause a massive uproar! I wonder if Miss Theresa is here. If she finds out—actually, even if she's not here, the news will reach her."

Ron gave him a baffled look.

"Why is that a problem?"

"You really don't know."

Michelle lowered his voice to a whisper only Ron could hear.

"The Second Royal Wife dotes on her son. She personally asked His Majesty to arrange a marriage for His Highness Baird. The bride is the Marquis Alfred's only daughter, Miss Theresa."

"The Alfred Family's Marquis holds enormous influence in Carlo Kingdom. Miss Theresa is his only daughter. It's a perfect political match—and because of that, the Second Royal Wife was extremely pleased."

Ron blinked in disbelief.

Engaged by royal decree… and still having an affair in public?

This Prince was truly fearless—slapping not one, but three important faces at once. Ron had no idea how Baird planned to clean up this mess.

"It's over. Miss Theresa is here too," Michelle gasped.

Truly, Michelle was a natural narrator.

Ron followed his gaze and soon spotted Theresa amidst a group of noble ladies.

Golden hair, blue eyes, dignified and composed. Just standing there, she exuded an innate noble presence. This wasn't something that came from looks alone—she embodied education, upbringing, and grace. Even in rags, no one would mistake Theresa for a commoner.

In contrast, the girl beside the Prince—though smiling—carried a faint arrogance, a sharpness that lacked the polished refinement of a noble house.

Ron couldn't help wondering if Prince Baird was blind.

On the stairs, Baird lifted his hand.

The music gradually faded.

His eyes swept over the hall, briefly pausing on a certain person—revealing a smug grin.

"Welcome, everyone, to the ball hosted by yours truly. Before we begin, I have an important announcement."

Without waiting another second, Baird spoke again, impatient and triumphant.

"Right here, I shall introduce to you all… my deeply beloved fiancée, who stands by my side."

"—Julie Eugene, daughter of Count Eugene."

Gasps erupted.

Some were shocked.

Some showed expressions of as expected.

Others wore the gleeful look of people settling in to enjoy a scandal unfold.

Baird gazed at Julie. Their eyes met, and he continued proudly:

"I have already made a new engagement with her. Soon, I will officially marry Julie as my wife."

Silence fell instantly.

This was not a moment anyone dared to comment on.

"What? Not a single blessing?" Baird snapped, displeased.

Ron's expression twisted.

He quietly asked Michelle, "This guy is your Kingdom's Prince?"

"What do you mean your Kingdom's Prince? His Highness Baird is the Second Prince of our Carlo Kingdom," Michelle corrected instinctively—while carefully ignoring Ron calling the prince this guy.

Ron felt even more uneasy.

If this man ever ascended the throne, the kingdom's future was grim.

At that moment, a tall and handsome young man stepped forward.

"The two of you look very well-matched. I offer my blessings."

Another youth quickly followed with more praise. Soon, the entire hall began offering forced congratulations.

Michelle whispered commentary without pause:

"That first one is the third son of the Captain of the Knights. He already received an honorary title when he enrolled."

"The second is the legitimate son of a minister, a big shot in the academy, and often accompanies His Highness Baird."

With Michelle's explanations, Ron quickly grasped the power dynamics at play.

For Theresa, things were spiraling.

But she was the Alfred Marquis's daughter, and the engagement came from King Meredith himself. She shouldn't be in real danger.

After receiving a round of superficial blessings, Baird lifted his hand and pointed straight toward Theresa.

"Therefore, I now annul my engagement with Theresa Alfred!"

Finally, Theresa stepped forward.

"Your Highness Baird," she said calmly, "while I would also like to wish you both well, our engagement was arranged by His Majesty the King and my father. I do not believe such a union can be dissolved by your reckless decisions alone."

Composed. Graceful.

Absolutely unshaken.

How impressive.

Even now, Theresa maintained her noble bearing. Ron felt genuine admiration—he was thoroughly in "watching the drama" mode.

If he had half a watermelon to munch, the moment would have been perfect.

Baird burst into laughter.

"Of course it can be annulled."

Theresa frowned.

"You yourself said it: this is a royal engagement. When the female party's character is found lacking, I—as a member of the Royal Family—can terminate it unilaterally."

He snapped his fingers.

"Bring it here."

"Yes, Your Highness."

A young man handed him a scroll. Baird unrolled it with a triumphant smile.

"This document records your actions at the academy—deliberately making things difficult for Miss Julie and disgracing the Royal Family. What more do you have to say, Miss Theresa?"

Astrid rushed to Michelle's side, furious.

"That's impossible! Miss Theresa has always treated people kindly—everyone at the academy knows this. There's no way she would do something like that."

Ron raised an eyebrow.

"Then why is no one standing up to defend her?"

Marina answered flatly,

"Because they're afraid of offending His Highness Baird."

Just because of that?

He was only a prince, not the king.

Nobles valued reputation above all—yet they remained silent?

And wasn't this publicly humiliating the Alfred Marquis?

How would Meredith explain this?

Seeing Ron's confusion, Astrid clarified:

"His Majesty has never appointed a Crown Prince. That makes ambitious people believe His Highness Baird is most likely to ascend the throne."

Ah.

Ron instantly understood.

From her tone, Astrid clearly didn't believe Baird stood a chance.

Theresa stared at the scroll silently.

If they dared present it, they must have prepared falsified evidence thoroughly.

Baird was an idiot—

But the person backing him clearly wasn't.

Her silence only emboldened Baird further.

He laughed loudly:

"Today, not only will I annul the engagement, I will also exile you for insulting the Royal Family!"

Ignoring the stunned expressions in the hall, Baird asked:

"Dennis, where is the most remote place in the Kingdom?"

Dennis thought for a moment, then answered:

"The Arnold Territory, Your Highness. It borders the Black Valley Forest. The environment is harsh, and many people starve to death there every year."

"Good! Exile Theresa to the Arnold Territory!"

He waved his hand decisively.

Meanwhile, in the corner—

Ron froze.

I was just watching the show. Why did my territory suddenly get involved?!

Michelle, Astrid, and Marina simultaneously turned to look at Ron—

their eyes clearly asking whether that description was true.

Ron scowled and said coldly:

"He's talking nonsense."
