Chapter 18 - Jessica Makes Moves and Blurs Lines

Jessica Makes Moves and Blurs Lines

Jessica had a broad smile on her face. Christopher had delayed Amber Ann's construction loan, and she had treated him to congratulatory sex for it. She laughed out loud as she thought of goody Am and her money troubles.

She screwed up her face, thinking about her own problems in relation to her baby sister's. She changed gears and sped up, her Aston Martin smoothly revving into gear and moving along the highway. Jessica was going to meet her other little sister.

Her face screwed up again, as she thought about Virginia and her endless supply of money and her ability to lord it over others. She turned right—never slowing down—her hand shifting gears with practiced ease. The Aston Martin sped up a bit more, her anger expressing itself in horsepower.

Virginia waited outside Jessica's open-floor-plan, single-story house. She had always loved this house. It was all windows and surrounded a small garden, creating patios around the exterior and at its center—nothing but glass for walls. Even the bedroom walls were special glass that became opaque when privacy was needed.

She looked up when she heard the car speeding up the private drive. She knew who it was. She smiled—Jessica had a true flair for the dramatic.

Jessica came to a shuddering halt, the gearshift thrown into park, and she gracefully stepped out of the beautiful champagne-colored car.

Virginia laughed and shook her head. "Was that really necessary?"

"Yes—it was." Jessica smiled broadly.

Virginia scoffed. "Do you have the keys—ALL the keys?"

Jessica rolled her eyes, pursed her lips, and took out three sets of keys. Virginia stood looking at her—stone-faced—not accepting the keys. Jessica sucked her teeth and took out another set. Virginia smiled and cocked her head as she finally accepted the complete set of keys from her older sister.

She threw them all into her purse and made a phone call. "Hello. Send the transfer now, please."

She disconnected the call and smiled at her sister. Jessica's notification sounded, confirming the deposit, and Jessica matched her younger sister's smile.

Virginia shook her head. "Mom asked me to let you stay with me." She smiled maliciously. "Paul and I took your things to the downtown garden house." Her expression became serious. "I know how much you love open spaces. You'll have a view of the entire city."

"Thanks, Virginia."

Virginia handed her eldest sister a large set of keys. "Don't thank me. Thank Momma."

Jessica looked at the keys. She spoke softly, almost remorseful. "I do love him, you know? And I think he loves me."

Virginia burst into laughter. "You don't know what love is, Jessica. You just want him. He is insanely rich, his family is prominent…" She pursed her lips. "And your sister is married to him. You were always about conquest."

Jessica smiled. She leaned against her car. "You have always known me so well." She shrugged, looked to her beautiful house once more, and got back into the Aston Martin.

Just as she closed her door, Virginia yelled to her. "Don't forget that's Momma's car!"

Jessica smiled. She didn't have any more time to play with her sister. She needed to figure out how to divide Amber Ann and Dan and keep them divided.

She slammed her hand against the steering wheel. All of her plans had been ruined. Dan had been hers, and hers alone.

One drunken night, one slip, and it all went down the drain. She had never thought Amber capable – pregnant at 19 and ready to accept the responsibility. The true pain came when Dan decided he needed to marry her to legitimize the baby.

Jessica scoffed. He wanted to make sure the baby was legitimate and her weak sister couldn't even carry to term,

Everything lost and Dan didn't even have a baby to show for it.

Jessica wanted what was hers and she wanted it now

The Aston Martin skidded across gravel as she took another turn too fast and entered Christopher's neighborhood. She had to use this situation to show Amber she truly was not worthy of Dan. She stopped the car in the drive and quickly exited.

Christopher opened the door, his face serious.

"Why are you looking like that? We have to have sex to get the baby you want."

"We do not have to have sex to do this, Jessica."

"True, but it is much more fun this way." Her voice became husky as she touched his face and kissed him softly. She pulled back, her lips moist and her eyes full of longing.

"We need to do more to stop this resort project." She twirled a piece of his hair in her fingers.

"What more can I do? I delayed the loan. I am pretty sure I can cancel it altogether. That will throw doubt on the project, and she won't get investors."

"But Father…"

Christopher shook his head. "Your father is a businessman first and foremost. He is not going to invest in anything shaky."

He was right, of course, but Jessica didn't want to leave it to chance. She would have to figure something else out—something that didn't rely on money.

This version clarifies that Jessica is attempting to re-use her most devastating past strategy (the pregnancy/Dan's divided loyalty) now that Amber Ann is emotionally vulnerable and financially exposed.
