Chapter 25 - Chapter 11 — The Price of the Summit

The Crown Complex no longer looked abandoned.

Lights burned through its upper floors at night. Workers moved in shifts. Delivery trucks came and went under new security cameras. What had once been a forgotten structure in a dying district now pulsed with quiet activity, like a heart beginning to beat again.

And the city had noticed.

Tyler stood at the edge of the rooftop, hands in his pockets, watching the skyline stretch endlessly into the dark. The Upper District glowed in the distance, untouchable and clean, while the streets below hummed with restless energy. Somewhere between those two worlds, he now existed.

Not rich enough to be safe.

Not weak enough to be ignored.

The System flickered faintly in his vision.

[Season Objective: Near Completion]

It had been appearing more often lately, but offering less explanation. Rewards came slower. Missions became less clear. The easy rise was ending.

Now everything required risk.

Behind him, footsteps approached. Jonah stopped beside him, holding a tablet.

"Construction ahead of schedule," he said. "First commercial tenants already asking about leases."

Tyler nodded. "Good."

Jonah hesitated before continuing.

"There's more."

Tyler didn't look at him. He already knew.

"City council meeting tomorrow," Jonah said. "Emergency review. They're discussing zoning restrictions around this district."

Tyler exhaled slowly.

Selene again.

Not attacking directly.

Never directly.

Just tightening the space around him.

"She's forcing a confrontation," Tyler said.

Jonah nodded. "Or testing how far you're willing to go."

Silence settled between them.

Below, sirens echoed in the distance.

"You've changed," Jonah said finally.

Tyler smirked faintly. "That obvious?"

"You stop reacting emotionally now. You calculate first."

Tyler didn't answer.

Because it was true.

Power demanded distance. The closer you stood to everything, the harder it became to move when necessary.

Jonah left soon after, returning to work. Tyler stayed behind, staring at the city until the cold wind cut through his jacket.

The System chimed again.

[Final Phase Initiated]

The words lingered longer than usual.

Before Tyler could react, his phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"…Tyler Brooks."

A familiar voice responded.

Smooth. Calm. Dangerous.

"Congratulations," Selene said. "You survived your first season."

Tyler's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Calling to surrender?"

A soft laugh came through the line.

"No. Calling to warn you."

That made him pause.

"The city council vote tomorrow," she continued. "You think it's about zoning. It isn't."

Tyler felt the System stir.

"What is it about then?"

A brief silence.

Then:

"You."

The line went dead.

The next morning, the Crown Complex felt different.

Too quiet.

Mira noticed it first.

Workers whispered more. Security checked entrances twice. Even Jonah seemed tense, constantly refreshing news feeds.

Tyler arrived in the main hall just as the System activated again.

[Emergency Event Detected]

A screen lit up inside his vision.

City Council Emergency Announcement.

LIVE.

He frowned and turned on the nearby television.

The broadcast showed a press conference already in progress. Reporters crowded around the podium. Cameras flashed endlessly.

A council representative cleared his throat.

"Following recent investigations into irregular financial movements and rapid property acquisition within the Old Business Sector, the city has opened an official inquiry into the ownership and funding sources behind the Crown Complex redevelopment."

The room went silent.

Mira looked at Tyler. "What…?"

The representative continued.

"The individual known as Tyler Brooks has been identified as the primary beneficiary of multiple unexplained capital injections within a short period of time. Until the investigation concludes, all expansion permits related to the project are temporarily suspended."

The words hit harder than any threat.

Not violence.

Exposure.

Jonah swore under his breath. "They're freezing you."

Tyler's mind raced.

He had done nothing illegal.

The System ensured that.

But legality didn't matter if perception turned against him.

The broadcast ended.

Silence lingered.

Then Mira spoke quietly.

"They're trying to isolate you."

Tyler nodded slowly.

Selene wasn't destroying him.

She was pulling him into the open.

Forcing him to stand where everyone could see him.

The System chimed again.

[Season Objective Complete]

[Evaluation in Progress…]

Tyler blinked.

Evaluation?

The air around him felt heavier.

Then the next message appeared.

[You have successfully exited the Beginner Phase.]

Everything stopped.

Beginner.

A new screen unfolded, darker than the others.

[Season Reward Unlocked]

— Crown Complex Ownership Stabilized— Financial Network Tier Upgraded— New System Function Available

Tyler's pulse quickened.

"What now?" he murmured.

The answer appeared immediately.

[System Disclosure Phase Initiated]

For the first time since the System awakened, information flowed without restriction.

Fragments.

Images.

Data.

Not rewards.

History.

The Digital Drops System was not random.

Not luck.

Not even unique.

Tyler staggered slightly as the realization formed.

He wasn't the only user.

Across the city… across the country… others existed. Different systems. Different paths. Different objectives.

Some building.

Some destroying.

Some already far ahead.

The Crown Complex wasn't just an investment.

It was territory.

A foothold.

A starting point in something much larger than money or influence.

The screen shifted again.

[New Objective Registered]

— Expand Influence Beyond District Level— Identify Rival System Holders— Survive Advancement Phase

Tyler's breathing slowed.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Selene's interest.

The pressure.

The timing.

She knew.

Or at least suspected.

Mira grabbed his arm. "Tyler? You're pale."

He forced a smile. "I'm fine."

But inside, the ground had shifted completely.

This was never just about getting rich.

It was a game.

And he had just reached the part where players started losing.

That night, Tyler returned alone to the rooftop.

The city looked the same as always.

Cars moving.

Lights flickering.

People living lives unaware of the invisible war beginning around them.

His phone buzzed once more.

A message.

Unknown sender.

No number.

Just text.

"Welcome to Tier Two."

A photo followed.

Tyler's stomach dropped.

The image showed the Crown Complex from across the street.

Taken minutes ago.

Someone was watching.

Another message appeared.

"Let's see how long you last."

Tyler slowly lifted his gaze toward the opposite building.

A silhouette stood on a distant rooftop.

Watching him.

Then disappearing into the darkness.

The System chimed one last time.

[Season 1 Complete]

[Season 2 Preview Unlocked]

Warning:

Difficulty Increase: Severe.

Tyler smiled faintly despite the chill running down his spine.

The climb had only just begun.

And for the first time since everything started…

He realized reaching the top might not mean winning at all.
