Chapter 27 - Voltra

In the Biggest Prison on Earth

Every place on Earth had been struck by the crisis—the ghouls—and even the prison had not been spared. The attack began while the inmates were enjoying their break. The sudden blaring of the security siren threw the cafeteria into chaos. However, the guards quickly arrived, fired shots into the air, and tried to regain control. Amid this turmoil, one man remained calm, analyzing the situation. He had long red hair and green eyes. His jaw was sharp, his body well-trained. With a smile, he observed everyone—and of course, his gaze didn't miss the exit, the way to freedom. That man was Ezra, Larah's ex.

Ezra quietly removed the fork and knife from his meal, hiding them in his shoes, which he then covered with the orange prison uniform. It seemed he wasn't the only one scheming an escape. A guard at the door had to assist a colleague in restraining a group of inmates. A smaller group seized the moment and dashed toward the door. They made it—but the instant they pushed it open, a ghoul leapt in, ripping the flesh from their faces. Another joined, biting off a prisoner's genitals. The cries were hellish, loud enough to draw everyone's attention.

Ezra, however, was more in awe than fear. His grin widened as he rose to his feet and stared at a ghoul. More ghouls poured into the cafeteria. The guards stopped beating inmates. Now, it was either side with the ghouls—or the humans. One guard stepped forward, gun drawn, sweat soaking through his uniform. It was a wonder the weapon didn't slip from his grip.

'Listen up—this'll be brief! Our world has been attacked by these monsters, ghouls. I spoke with the military—they're everywhere. Short version: no help is coming. You fight or you die!' A ghoul charged the man, seeming to grin. The guard fired. The bullets slowed it down, but he hadn't hit any vital parts. The ghoul crawled toward him regardless. The others joined. The remaining guards didn't hesitate—they rushed to help their comrade. The prisoners were slower to act, but they, too, understood: survive now, worry about consequences later. Choosing between life and death wasn't exactly hard. So, they joined the fight.

Humans and ghouls clashed. It was ugly. It was bloody. Ezra was in the middle of it. Was he fighting to help? No. He threw his fork and knife—straight into a ghoul's eyes. Then, he dashed forward, swiped the creature's legs from under it, and smashed its jaw with a kick. One by one, he broke its limbs—grinning the entire time. Blood from ghouls and men sprayed across his face. He didn't bother wiping it off. Breaking the thing apart was his joy.

'You're a funny one,' someone said. Ezra snapped his head to the side. A man stood there, dressed like Nighyel—clearly a dark priest. No beard. Short black hair shaved at the sides. Tall, slim build. Ezra took a moment, then acted—he lunged at the man. The dark priest didn't move. When Ezra struck him, a shockwave surged through Ezra's body, sending him flying. He slammed into a ghoul, which turned around to attack—only to be obliterated by a yellow lightning spear that left a hole in its head. The priest still stood in place, watching.

'You're a funny man,' he said again. 'Still alive after that shock. It wasn't even strong, just enough to kill a regular human.'

'Who are you?' Ezra asked.

'You may call me Voltra. I like you. You'd fit right in with us.' Ezra stood up, still trembling from the shock, but alive—and eager to stay that way.

'What do you mean, fit in? Fit in with who?'

'A new world order is coming. A new era. You can die with the rest of these foolish humans, become a ghoul—or come with me. I'll give you power. Show you everything.'

'Why me?'

'Because I sense it—your sinister nature, your darkness. And your strength. Now tell me, what is it that you desire most?'

'I want power. Power to do what I want—when I want. And when I have that power… I'll get her back. I'll get Larah back.'

'That is music to my ears!'
