Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Two Brave Through the Maze

Bang!

Stelle's bat smashed hard onto the giant Trotter.

That enormous Trotter let out a wail, then toppled backward entirely, and finally disappeared right in front of Nero and Stelle.

The two of them looked around eagerly in all directions, but didn't find any dropped Stellar Jades.

At some unknown point, the Fright Maze had already fallen silent.

The Galactic Baseballer swung her bat around, she was beating things down one by one without even making a sound.

The Fright Maze's mind was full of questions.

'What is with these two people?'

'Aren't they afraid?'

'When seeing a creature far bigger than oneself, shouldn't a certain instinctive fear arise?'

Its ability was essentially the influence it had on the mental state of individuals inside the maze. But with Nero and Stelle treating this giant Trotter as prey, that part of its ability couldn't show any effect at all.

After searching for a while longer and still not finding any Stellar Jades, Nero spread his hands toward Stelle, "What a pity. Such a big Trotter. An illusion is still just an illusion, completely useless."

"Exactly. It doesn't even drop Stellar Jades." Stelle completely agreed with Nero.

The dislike in the two people's tone wasn't concealed at all. Every word carried the meaning of looking down on the Fright Maze.

Already extremely humiliated and furious, the Fright Maze was instantly overwhelmed by rage upon hearing this.

"You two don't get cocky! That was just a Trotter! There's something even tougher waiting for you!"

But Nero and Stelle didn't respond to it at all, and simply continued walking toward the deeper part of the maze.

Throwing out threatening words with no one reacting made the Fright Maze feel utterly embarrassed, like a clown.

Nero and Stelle kept going, and the deeper they walked, the more intricate the maze became. As they continued deeper, the forks and dead ends they encountered grew more and more numerous.

Moving blindly through a maze without leaving any kind of markers along the way was extremely dangerous; one could very easily get lost inside.

However, Nero and Stelle's goal this time was to retrieve the Fright Maze, and the two of them were filled with the belief that they would win. So they remained optimistic about the maze corridors becoming more and more complicated.

The purpose of the maze was originally something the Fright Maze set up to protect itself. So the more complex the layout became, the closer it meant they were to it.

Nero estimated that after walking forward a bit more, he could try placing down the Imaginary Overflow Interference Field every so often and checking it.

Maybe after one of the attempts, the Fright Maze's power would be affected, and the maze would just go "pop" and disappear.

"Roar!"

Suddenly, a beastly roar came from somewhere, followed by a series of sounds of walls being destroyed and collapsing.

A monster over five meters tall, shaped like a werewolf, charged toward them.

This thing was bare all over its body, completely smooth, not a bit of fur, not even skin. Pink muscle tissue was exposed on the outside, and every vein was clearly visible.

Its arms were over three meters long, a pair of sharp claws gleaming like blades. It had no eyes, ears, or nose, only a giant mouth stretching almost all the way to its neck. When it opened it, the mouth was full of sharp fangs, and its long tongue stretched out, covered in swollen blisters, swaying like a serpent.

The Fright Maze's arrogant voice came again.

"The giant Trotter couldn't do anything to you, how about this one!?"

Although it looked awful, the monster before them truly seemed like a strong enemy. Stelle took a step forward, shielding Nero behind her, her gaze locked tightly on the monster.

Nero looked at the monster's muscle contours, which seemed very springy, and instantly hallucinated about a delicious food. He raised a hand and wiped his mouth.

"Hehehe… it looks pretty tasty."

"Huh?"

"Huh?"

Hearing Nero's words, Stelle and the Fright Maze froze at the same time.

Stelle once again remembered how Dan Heng had emphasized three times that the Trotter couldn't be eaten, while the Fright Maze burst into a cold laugh.

"Hehehe… tasty? I think you've been scared stupid! This is the legendary monster, the Chesah Mole-man! Those humans wearing the same uniform as you wet their pants the moment they saw it! You two are going to get eaten right here!"

As the Fright Maze's voice fell, the Mole-man swung its claws, slashing down at Nero and Stelle.

Stelle was just about to counter with her bat when Nero, standing behind her, lifted his hand. He lightly clenched the air, and a fierce wind suddenly gathered in his palm, forming an invisible blade.

Nero's movement was weightless, making a downward slicing gesture, like a drifting willow catkin settling softly.

But the attack he released was nothing as gentle as it appeared. An unimaginable storm swept up the Mole-man, and the tangled winds were like the fangs of a wild beast, instantly tearing the Mole-man's body in half. Blood and organs mixed together, bursting apart along with the Mole-man's body.

For a brief moment, the thick smell of blood and the foul stench of the Mole-man's various bodily fluids rushed into Nero and Stelle's noses.

But since this was ultimately an illusion created by the Fright Maze, all the unpleasant scenes quickly vanished, leaving only a long stretch of destroyed walls before them.

The Fright Maze didn't even seem to bother repairing the maze anymore.

"Huh?"

Nero's performance left the Fright Maze dumbfounded, its arrogant bluster extinguished like a bucket of cold water thrown over its head.

'Are these two people insane?!'

'Be scared already!!'

'Do I not deserve any dignity?!'

The Fright Maze's muttered complaints did not transmit out, but after losing twice in a row in a single move, its mental state began to shift.

Flustered yet cautious, it tried to pick up the shattered pieces of its dignity and mindset one by one, like assembling a jigsaw puzzle.

Huge beasts and terrifying monsters had no effect on these two. Then it could only use something even more unpredictable to deal with them.

The Fright Maze soon thought of a new method, it had stayed in the space station for so long, and had heard a few ghost stories.

"Haha! You two are pretty good, aren't you? But this is the end. Next, I'm getting serious!"

The Fright Maze's voice drifted once again into Nero and Stelle's ears.

Walking side by side, Nero spread his hands and said to Stelle, "Listen, this, this is called a stubborn duck with a stiff beak. It clearly has no confidence left."

As he spoke, Nero activated the Imaginary Overflow Interference Field again. The maze was not affected.

"Looks like we're still too far. Let's go a bit further." Nero picked up the device as he spoke.

Stelle nodded.

"Don't get smug! You'll see soon whether I'm a stubborn duck or not! Those people who came to catch me before all ran out crying and screaming because of this! I'll show you what real terror is!"

"Oh." Nero's reply was short, but the mockery in it was overflowing.

Stelle tightened her grip on her bat. Her expression showed a bit of nervousness, but her eyes remained determined.

She quickly caught up to Nero's pace.

In the next stretch of time, the Fright Maze became extremely quiet, not saying a single word.

And the brightness inside the maze grew darker and darker.

Some faint, drifting movements floated around them, slowly seeping in from all directions, circling near the two.

They sounded like indistinct whispers, yet also like genderless chanting mixed with shrill cries.

As they walked forward, Stelle couldn't help lifting a hand to rub her arm.

She didn't know if it was her imagination, but it felt like the maze was getting colder and colder.

Suddenly, a chill wind blew from behind, carrying an ethereal, eerie laugh with it.

"Ke-ke-ke…"

The laugh felt like it was pressed right against their backs.
