Chapter 14 - The dates at Dawn

I didn't even make it to breakfast.

At 4:47 a.m. my door opened without a knock.

Caleb stood there in full training gear: black sleeveless shirt, leather pants, hair tied back, the scar across his eyebrow catching the torchlight. He looked like he'd been up for hours.

"Get dressed," he said. "Boots. Something you can move in. You've got you till sunset."

I blinked sleep out of my eyes. "It's still dark."

"Exactly."

Ten minutes later I was stumbling after him through the sleeping palace, down servant corridors, out a side door I didn't even know existed. A horse was already waiting: one huge black monster that snorted at me like I was breakfast.

Caleb lifted me onto the saddle like I weighed nothing, then swung up behind me. One arm locked around my waist.

"Hold on."

We rode out of the city before the sun even thought about rising.
