Chapter 55: Entering the Ruins
By midday, when the sun hung high in the sky, a group of powerful individuals staying in Black Wind City began to move.
"Heh, everyone, please follow me," the Black Wind Sect Leader said as he stepped forward to personally lead the group, his tone carrying a hint of flattery.
Typically, the sect would send only an elder to guide adventurers exploring the ruins. But today, the Sect Leader himself had taken on the role. The reason? Two specific individuals.
The identity of the young man in black remained unknown to him, but he had learned some details about the cold, aloof girl.
"Medicine Clan! An ancient clan with a legacy spanning over ten thousand years, descended from Dou Emperors, and still housing several Dou Saints."
The Sect Leader swallowed nervously at the thought of such an unreachable level of power.
The ruins of the Yin Yang Evil Saint were located less than 100 kilometers from Black Wind City. Everyone present, even the weakest among them, was a Dou Huang. It took them less than a quarter of an hour to arrive.
"Everyone, this is the Evil Saint's ruins," the Sect Leader said, pointing to an ancient city that seemed to rise abruptly from the plains beyond a sea of golden wheat fields.
The city's diameter was only a few dozen kilometers, modest in size. One side of it glowed with a white halo, while the other was shrouded in pitch black mist. Just glancing at the mist was enough to stir violent and murderous impulses within the heart.
In front of the ancient city stood a stone monument, an object that hadn't existed until recently. It had appeared after a Dou Zong from the Black Wind Sect had attempted to force his way into the ruins.
"Those who enter these ruins have the chance to inherit my legacy.
However, those above Dou Zong are forbidden to enter. Attempting to force entry will result in the ruins' destruction."
The ancient script radiated an unrestrained and rebellious aura. Even after a millennium, the inscription seemed to echo the spirit of someone who lived freely and without care.
"Everyone, the ruins are about to open. Prepare yourselves. You've been warned of the price of entering there's still time to turn back," the Sect Leader said solemnly.
No one budged.
At that moment, the white glowing side of the ruins rippled. A silver ring of light appeared on the ruins' edge.
"The time has come. Please enter. The portal will close in fifteen minutes. Be cautious," the Sect Leader said with a smile, sneaking a glance at both Xiao Yan and Yao Ling.
With slight nods, the group began to move. The first Dou Huang experts unfolded their Dou Qi wings and flew into the portal.
"Cousin, how about we team up? It'll be safer for both of us," Xiao Yan suggested to Yao Ling.
As a cautious man, Xiao Yan wouldn't miss the chance to ally with someone strong. The Medicine Clan might not be entirely trustworthy, but they were preferable to strangers. Knowing the Xiao Clan's power, they would hesitate to cross him. Besides, Xiao Yan had another reason for his proposal.
Yao Ling frowned slightly but was interrupted by Yao Xu, who said, "Miss, teaming up with the Xiao Clan youth is a safer choice than working with outsiders. As a genius of the Xiao Clan, he surely has some impressive cards up his sleeve."
"The people inside these ruins won't necessarily care about the Medicine Clan's reputation," Yao Xu added.
After some thought, Yao Ling nodded. Xiao Yan's playful banter the previous night had already made him seem less of a stranger, which now worked to his advantage.
Seeing her agreement, Xiao Yan dropped his casual demeanor and adopted a serious expression, inspiring trust and a sense of security.
"Let's go," Yao Ling said, unfolding her beautiful Dou Qi wings and leading the way into the ruins. Xiao Yan followed close behind.
Passing through the silver portal, they found themselves in an entirely different world.
A Dou Saint's mastery over space allowed them to create vast realms within small areas. Inside, the ancient city was far larger than it appeared from the outside. However, the ravages of time had left it lifeless, its former glory reduced to ruins.
"This is the space the Yin Yang Evil Saint created?" Xiao Yan murmured, glancing around. He couldn't help but compare it to the grandeur of the Xiao Clan, which was far superior.
"Cousin, don't fly so fast!" Xiao Yan called, speeding up to catch Yao Ling. At that moment, a few figures approached her.
The newcomers were Dou Huang experts, but their eyes were bloodshot, and their gazes burned with lust as they fixed on Yao Ling.
"Damn, the curse in these ruins works fast," Xiao Yan muttered. These people had only entered moments before him, yet they were already losing control.
"Beautiful lady, let's have some fun," one of the Dou Huangs said with a lecherous grin.
In normal circumstances, they might have restrained themselves, but the sight of Yao Ling's stunning beauty had ignited the flames of their desires.
"Get lost, or die," Yao Ling said coldly, her frosty demeanor unshaken.
"Heh, a feisty one!" the man sneered and moved to grab her.
Yao Ling didn't waste words. With a cold snort, an immense soul storm erupted from her body, so powerful that even Xiao Yan's expression changed.
Her soul strength was comparable to that of a high level seventh tier alchemist.
"Soul Piercing Spear!" Yao Ling shouted.
Her invisible soul force condensed into a spear and shot toward the offending Dou Huang.
"Ahhh!" The man screamed as blood poured from his orifices. Holding his head, he collapsed to the ground, his soul severely injured a wound far harder to heal than a physical one.
The other Dou Huangs, now partially sobered, stammered apologies and quickly fled. They realized this woman was far from easy prey.
"Cousin, you're amazing," Xiao Yan said, offering a sly compliment as he caught up.
"If all you can do is talk, I see no reason for this partnership," Yao Ling said coldly, clearly displeased with Xiao Yan's earlier inaction.
"Heh, don't worry. Since I chose to partner with you, I'll gladly play the role of protector," Xiao Yan said with a grin.
The two said no more and swiftly flew toward the location of the Yin Yang Twin Flame. Neither the other treasures nor the Evil Saint's legacy interested them as much as the flame.
After about fifteen minutes, they spotted an ancient altar in the distance.
At its center burned a black and white flame.
The moment Xiao Yan saw the flame, his expression changed.
