Chapter 133 - Chapter 133

The atmosphere inside the command center was tense.

Not because of battle reports or enemy fleets, but because of politics—something Darth Vader hated almost as much as failure.

The large chamber overlooked the growing settlement on Nitharis through massive transparisteel windows. Far below, construction crews worked tirelessly on new walls while prefabricated structures rose across the landscape. Cargo shuttles moved back and forth from orbit, delivering supplies and equipment from the fleet that had arrived only days earlier.

From a distance, the settlement looked peaceful.

Inside the command center, however, peace was nowhere to be found.

A holographic star map floated above the central conference table while several officers argued over the future of nearby systems. These were not ordinary Imperial officers. Every man and woman present had earned Vader's trust over years of service. They wore Imperial uniforms and carried Imperial ranks, but their loyalty belonged to him first and the Empire second.

"The governor remains loyal to the Emperor," one general said while pointing toward a blue world rotating within the projection.

Another officer immediately disagreed.

"Officially, yes. Unofficially, he obeys because he's afraid."

"Fear still produces obedience."

"For now," the officer replied. "But fear doesn't create loyalty."

The debate continued while Vader listened in silence.

Normally he would have considered such discussions beneath his attention. During the Clone Wars he had left political maneuvering to senators, admirals, and bureaucrats. Back then, his solution to most problems involved a lightsaber and overwhelming force.

Things were different now.

Darth Zannah's task had forced him to think beyond battlefields and military victories. If he truly intended to challenge Sidious someday, then armies alone would not be enough. He needed governors who owed him favors. Admirals who trusted his leadership. Entire systems willing to support him if the Empire ever fractured.

Building an army was important.

Building a power base was essential.

Without warning, every screen in the room flashed crimson.

The conversation died instantly.

Several officers stiffened while others exchanged uneasy glances. Vader slowly turned toward the nearest display and immediately recognized the signal.

The Emperor.

No one ignored a direct transmission from Darth Sidious.

The officers instinctively stepped back as a blue hologram materialized above the conference table. Emperor Palpatine appeared with his hands folded within his robes, his yellow Sith eyes sweeping across the room with unsettling precision.

Vader immediately bowed his head.

"What is the matter, my Master?"

Sidious did not answer.

Instead, his gaze wandered across the chamber.

The Emperor studied the officers standing near the table. He examined the star maps, the tactical displays, and every visible detail of the room. Several commanders suddenly found the floor fascinating.

Nobody wanted the Emperor's attention.

Finally, the old Sith's gaze returned to Vader.

A small smile appeared.

Vader disliked that smile.

"Where are you, my young apprentice?"

The question sounded casual.

Which immediately made Vader suspicious.

Years of experience had taught him that Sidious rarely asked questions unless he already knew the answer. Casual conversations with the Emperor usually concealed a purpose.

"I am overseeing Imperial operations, my Lord."

"Indeed?"

The silence that followed stretched uncomfortably.

Several officers shifted nervously.

"It has been some time since I last saw you," Sidious continued.

"My duties have required my attention elsewhere."

"Of course they have."

The response sounded harmless enough, but Vader detected the hidden meaning beneath the words. Sidious was reminding him that distance could be interpreted as disobedience.

Or ambition.

Neither interpretation was pleasant.

Eventually the Emperor waved a hand dismissively and changed the subject.

"A supply convoy was attacked."

The atmosphere in the room immediately shifted.

"The rebels again?" Vader asked.

"The rebels."

Palpatine's expression darkened.

"They continue to grow bolder. Only half of the supplies reached their destination."

Nobody spoke.

The hologram shifted again, revealing a planet marked with military installations, contested territories, and active battle zones.

"Kaiser."

The Emperor pronounced the planet's name with clear displeasure.

"The situation remains unstable."

His voice hardened.

"The food shipments were necessary. The fuel shipments were necessary. The ammunition shipments were necessary."

The yellow eyes narrowed.

"The people of Kaiser obey because the Empire provides order. If that order weakens, then rebellion becomes inevitable."

Fear had always been Sidious's preferred method of governance. Fear was efficient. Fear required less effort than loyalty.

But fear depended upon strength.

And strength depended upon resources.

Without supplies, even fear lost its effectiveness.

The Emperor looked directly at Vader.

"The rebels may seize control of the planet."

Vader understood immediately.

This conversation had never truly been about the convoy.

It was about what happened next.

"What do you wish me to do, my Master?"

A slow smile spread across Sidious's face.

There it was.

The real purpose of the transmission.

"You will go to Kaiser."

The holographic planet expanded above the table.

"You will destroy the rebels."

"You will restore order."

The Emperor's voice became colder.

"You will conquer the planet."

Then his eyes locked onto Vader's.

"And when you are finished..."

The room seemed to darken.

"...you will give the planet back to me."

Darth Vader stood alone inside the observation chamber of his flagship as hyperspace stretched endlessly beyond the transparisteel viewport.

Once, long ago, Anakin Skywalker had loved traveling through hyperspace. As a child on Tatooine, he had dreamed of seeing distant worlds, imagining endless adventures among the stars. He would spend hours staring through ship windows whenever he had the opportunity.

Now he simply stood in silence.

The steady mechanical breathing of his armor filled the chamber, cold and artificial. Every breath reminded him of Mustafar. Of fire. Of failure. Of everything he had lost.

The Emperor's orders echoed through his thoughts.

Kaiser.

Destroy the rebels.

Conquer the planet.

Simple instructions. The kind he had carried out countless times throughout his life.

Yet this mission felt different.

Not because the rebels concerned him. Rebellions rose and fell every year across the galaxy. Given enough troops and enough time, he could crush this one as well.

No, the true challenge waiting on Kaiser was Darth Sidious.

Vader clasped his hands behind his back and stared into the endless sea of blue light. During the years since Mustafar, he had slowly begun to understand something that should have been obvious much earlier.

The Emperor never stopped watching.

Every fleet assignment. Every military campaign. Every political victory. Every failure.

Sidious observed everything.

Somewhere among the officers serving aboard this fleet were people reporting directly to the Emperor. Somewhere within Imperial Intelligence were agents assigned specifically to monitor him. Communications officers, admirals, governors, bureaucrats—any of them could be providing information to Coruscant.

The Emperor trusted nobody.

Not his governors.

Not his Moffs.

Not his admirals.

And certainly not his apprentice.

Especially not his apprentice.

The realization no longer angered Vader as much as it once had. Instead, it left behind a lingering sense of disappointment.

Darth Zannah had been correct.

Sidious had never truly trained him.

Not the way a Sith Master was supposed to train an apprentice.

The Emperor had taught him enough to remain useful. Enough to remain dangerous. Enough to eliminate enemies and command armies. But every lesson had been measured carefully. Every secret had been rationed.

Like feeding scraps to a starving animal.

Years ago that realization would have filled him with rage.

Now it simply felt pathetic.

A faint blue glow illuminated the chamber.

Vader did not need to turn around to know what caused it.

The holocron resting on a nearby pedestal activated, and Darth Zannah's holographic form appeared beside him.

"You are thinking again."

Vader continued watching hyperspace.

"I often think."

"Not like this."

There was amusement in her voice.

For a moment, neither spoke. Then Zannah folded her arms and studied him carefully.

"Your anger has changed."

The statement was accurate enough that Vader did not bother denying it.

The anger remained. It always would. Rage had become part of him long ago. But it no longer dominated every decision. No longer consumed every thought. He still drew upon it, but now he controlled it rather than allowing it to control him.

"You understand now," Zannah said quietly.

"Understand what?"

"The difference between power and slavery."

Vader turned slightly toward her.

The ancient Sith met his gaze without hesitation.

"For years you believed yourself powerful. Yet every significant decision required your Master's approval. Every ambition depended on his permission. Every victory strengthened him more than it strengthened you."

A faint smile touched her lips.

"You wore chains and called them power."

Vader disliked how accurate the observation was.

The worst part was that she wasn't mocking him.

She was simply telling the truth.

"The Emperor fears powerful apprentices," he said.

"He should."

"He fears losing control."

Zannah nodded. "And now you understand why he never allowed you to grow beyond a certain point."

The recent months had made that increasingly obvious.

Every success attracted scrutiny.

Every independent action generated questions.

The appearance of the mysterious Sith.

The growing strength of the rebellion.

Each event made Sidious more suspicious.

And suspicion was dangerous when it belonged to the most powerful Sith Lord in the galaxy.

Vader looked toward the distant stars beyond hyperspace.

"The mission at Kaiser will be difficult."

Zannah raised an eyebrow.

"The rebels?"

"No."

He shook his head.

"The Emperor."

For the first time, genuine approval appeared on her face.

The rebels represented a military problem. Military problems had solutions.

The Emperor represented a political problem.

And political problems were far more dangerous.

At Kaiser, he would need to walk a careful path. He needed victory, but not a victory impressive enough to draw unwanted attention. He needed success, but not success that forced Sidious to wonder how his apprentice had suddenly improved.

Because he had improved.

The recent training had changed him.

His connection to the Force flowed more smoothly. His awareness extended farther. His instincts sharpened. The improvements were subtle enough to avoid notice for now, but they existed.

And if Sidious ever noticed them...

Questions would follow.

Questions would lead to investigations.

Investigations would eventually lead to Darth Zannah.

That could not happen.

"You must appear weaker," Zannah observed.

"Unfortunately."

Her smile widened slightly.

"Many Sith would struggle with that."

"I am not many Sith."

For a moment she looked almost proud.

"You are finally learning to think for yourself."

The statement lingered between them.

Eventually the conversation shifted in a direction Vader knew was coming.

"How do you feel?"

He nearly sighed.

He hated that question.

Years ago the answer would have been simple.

Anger.

Hatred.

Pain.

Those emotions had defined him.

Now things were becoming more complicated.

He searched for the correct word.

When he finally found it, it felt strange even saying it aloud.

"Content."

The word sounded foreign.

Yet true.

His settlement on Nitharis continued growing. Officers followed him out of loyalty rather than fear. People worked beside him because they believed in his leadership.

Not because they feared Darth Vader.

Not because they worshipped the Empire.

Because they trusted him.

The realization brought something he had not experienced in a very long time.

Contentment.

Zannah slowly nodded.

"A beginning."

Vader looked away.

Because she was right.

And perhaps that frightened him more than he cared to admit.

The silence stretched between them until another thought surfaced.

His son.

The search continued across the galaxy. Loyal agents pursued rumors and leads while others quietly investigated anything connected to Obi-Wan Kenobi. Every report eventually reached Vader's desk.

So far none had succeeded.

Yet for the first time he no longer felt desperation.

Only determination.

The galaxy was vast.

But not infinite.

Eventually he would find Luke.

And when that day came, he intended for their meeting to end differently than Sidious expected.

A sudden alarm shattered the silence.

The doors slid open and a droid hurried into the chamber.

"Lord Vadar."

Vader immediately turned.

"What is it?"

"We have arrived in the Kaiser system."

The droid hesitated.

"Several rebel fleets are already engaging Imperial positions."

For the first time since receiving the Emperor's orders, Vader felt something familiar stir within him.

Conflict.

Unlike politics, war was honest.

Enemies stood before you.

Victories could be measured.

Defeats could be understood.

War made sense.

He moved toward the exit.

The officer stepped aside immediately.

Behind him, Zannah's hologram flickered.

"Remember."

Vader stopped.

"You are not fighting for the Emperor."

Her voice softened.

"Use this mission."

"Use the victory."

"Use the people."

The blue flames within her eyes brightened.

"Every conquest should strengthen you. Not Sidious."

For several moments Vader remained silent.

Then he gave a single nod.

The hologram vanished.

Beyond the viewport, Kaiser filled the darkness of space.

A world at war.

A world the Emperor wanted.

A world that could become useful.

And as the ship descent toward the troubled planet, Darth Vader found himself thinking not about Sidious, the rebels, or even the coming battle.

He thought about opportunity.

Because for the first time in many years, Darth Vader was building something that belonged to him.

And Kaiser might become another piece of that future.
