Lara's POV
When we finally step out of that suffocating office, I feel something shift inside me. Like steel replacing the hollow ache in my chest. So when Joseph asks how the meeting went, I don't crumble like I want to. Instead, I square my shoulders and meet his concerned gaze head-on.
"My mother's brother is exactly like my father," I say, my voice steadier than I expected. "We won't be building any relationship with my mother's family."
Joseph studies my face for a long moment before pulling me into his arms. His embrace is warm and protective, everything a father's hug should be.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart. I know that must hurt more than you're letting on."
"It does hurt," I admit against his shoulder. "But I refuse to let their rejection define my life. They've never been part of my world before now, so nothing really changes."
"You two heading to the other territory?" Joseph asks as he releases me.
