Chapter 146 - Night Before the Battle

I couldn't sleep. Neither could Darius.

We'd left the command center without really deciding to. One minute we were staring at maps and battle plans, the next we were in my room with the door closed, both of us too wired to rest.

Through my window, I could see lights scattered across campus. Our defensive positions. Patrols walking their routes. Students who'd chosen to stay and fight instead of evacuating, all of them waiting through what might be the longest night of their lives.

Darius stood at the window, his back to me. Even from here, I could feel how tense he was. His wolf was right at the surface—I could tell by the way his shoulders were tight, the way his eyes tracked every tiny movement outside that I couldn't even see.

"You should try to sleep," I said, though I knew it was pointless. I was just as awake as he was.

"Should," he agreed, but he didn't turn around. "Can't."
