Chapter 112 - Preparing for the Ambush

Every second counted; hesitation could be fatal.

The command center transformed into war room within minutes of Marcus's report. Maps updated. Red markers multiplying. Defensive positions reassessed against new intelligence.

Fifty fighters in ambush position. Twelve to fifteen packs staging for continental assault. Overwhelming force designed to eliminate example of hierarchy challenge.

"We can't ignore the ambush," I said. "Can't let them control perimeter. But engaging plays into their hands. Wastes resources before main assault."

"Avoiding ambush means abandoning reconnaissance," Caleb countered. "Means going blind into continental assault with no updated intelligence."

"Engaging ambush means potential casualties we can't afford. Every fighter lost defending against fifty is fighter unavailable against hundreds."

Through the bond, Darius's tactical mind worked parallel to mine. Calculating odds. Assessing options. Finding least-bad choice among terrible alternatives.
