The festival was in full swing when Gideon made his move.
Darius and I had just finished another ceremonial dance. We were standing near the refreshment tables, catching our breath, when I heard Gideon's voice carry across the courtyard.
"Everyone, if I could have your attention for just a moment."
Students turned. The music didn't stop, but conversations quieted. Gideon stood on the edge of the central platform, looking perfectly composed and reasonable.
Through the bond, Darius went rigid. "What's he doing?"
"Nothing good."
Gideon smiled that practiced, charming smile that made people trust him despite every warning sign.
"I know this is a celebration," he said, voice pitched to carry without seeming aggressive. "A time to honor bonds and connections. But I think there's something we should address. Something that's been bothering many of us."
