I hated that my heart betrayed my mind.
The infirmary visit was quick. Minor contusions, split lip, bruised ribs. Nothing requiring serious treatment. The nurse gave me ice packs and disapproving looks in equal measure.
"You should be more careful," she said, like I'd chosen to get jumped by four people.
I didn't bother responding.
Darius waited outside, pacing like a caged animal. His wolf was still too close to the surface, still vibrating with the need to protect and eliminate threats.
The moment I stepped out, his eyes locked on my face. On the visible damage.
"Come on," he said quietly. "My room. We need to talk."
I didn't argue. Partly because I'd agreed to stay with him tonight. Mostly because the bond was pulling me toward him anyway, seeking comfort and safety after the violence.
His quarters were in the Alpha wing of the main dormitory. Bigger than mine, nicer furnishings, private bathroom. Perks of being the heir.
