Chapter 149 - 149 - The Demon's Head

Deep in the Himalayas, even the wind seemed to fall silent.

At this altitude, the air was thin enough to make breathing painful. Snow drifted through the sky in spirals, settling over the landscape until the world appeared frozen in white.

This was a place where time had no meaning. Civilizations could rise and fall without leaving the faintest trace behind. And yet, clinging to the side of a sheer cliff face stood a fortress.

Its stone walls blended seamlessly with the natural rock, making it difficult to distinguish where the mountain ended and human construction began. At the heart of the fortress, built into the highest peak, was the observatory.

It was a massive circular platform carved directly from the mountain's summit, ringed by stone monoliths that stood. Each pillar was covered in symbols.

Ra's al Ghul stood at the edge of the platform. He stared westward.

Behind him, light footsteps approached across the stone. He didn't turn. He knew the sound of his daughter's walk as well as he knew his own heartbeat.

"Father."

Talia stopped beside him. She wore black tactical gear under a dark red cloak.

"The vanguard has reached the waters outside Gotham. The ghost ships can begin escorting the main force whenever you give the word."

Ra's made a small sound of acknowledgment. His gaze never shifted from the west.

"I believed Bruce could be the heir. I saw his strength and will. I thought he understood what needed to be done. But he chose to save the patient instead of curing the disease."

"You have said this before."

"Because it remains true." Ra's finally turned to face her. "He clings to that cesspool, trying to cleanse a wound that has rotted to the bone. He punishes criminals but leaves the systems that create them intact. It's a noble failure, but a failure nonetheless."

Talia pressed her lips together. Bruce had always been the most complicated subject between her and her father. She loved him. She respected him. And she knew her father saw him as the son he never had. But that made the disappointment cut deeper.

"So you intend to teach him another lesson."

Ra's shook his head slowly. "Gotham isn't a city anymore, Talia. It's a symptom. He treats the symptoms with a scalpel, cutting away the infected tissue piece by piece, never realizing the patient is already terminal."

He turned back to the west, and his hands tightened behind his back.

"The only cure is fire. Only through annihilation can something new grow."

"And Bruce?" Talia asked quietly.

"He will watch everything he loves burn. And then he will understand. Or he will die alongside his city. Either way, the lesson will be complete."

Talia was silent for a long moment. She understood her father's philosophy. In some ways, she even agreed with it. The world was sick. Humanity was eating itself alive. But Bruce still believed there was another way. And part of her wanted to believe he was right.

"The Church of Blood is ready," she said, changing the subject. "They want Trigon's arrival even more than we do. Blood Brother seems convinced he can merge with the demon's essence and ascend."

A cold smile touched Ra's lips. "Fanatics have their uses. Their rituals and obsessions will open the door to Trigon's dimension far more efficiently than any method we could devise. They want a god. We want his blood. Everyone gets what they desire."

His gaze shifted to the center of the observatory platform.

Set into the stone was a pool.

This was one of the Lazarus Pits.

The glow was dimmer than it had been a century ago. The liquid level had dropped, exposing ring after ring of stained obsidian.

"The Lazarus is failing. Centuries of use have drained it. And the Earth's life force is weakening. The Pit draws from that energy, and as the world sickens, so too does the well."

Talia stared at the pool. She had bathed in its waters more than once. The thought of that power running dry was terrifying.

"Trigon's blood carries life energy that predates this universe," Ra's said, as though reading her thoughts. "If we can capture him, or even just obtain a portion of his essence, and infuse it into the Lazarus Pit..."

He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't need to.

Talia said slowly, "Father, that is—"

"Without the Lazarus Pit, the League ends," Ra's cut her off. "We have extended our lives for centuries, Talia. Do you truly believe we can simply return to mortality now? Our enemies would tear us apart within a year."

"We can't fight a dimensional entity."

"We don't need to." Ra's smiled. "The prophecy says that when the demon descends in physical form, its power will recede like the tide. In that moment, even mortal hands may spill the blood of a god."

He began walking toward the edge of the platform, and Talia followed.

"The Church of Blood will summon Trigon. Gotham will serve as the bait. Once Trigon anchors himself to this reality through his daughter, he will become vulnerable. That's when we strike. Bruce will have a choice. He can stand aside and allow us to save the world, or he can die trying to protect a city that was doomed from the beginning."

They descended from the observatory, following a spiral staircase carved into the mountain itself. At the bottom of the staircase was a massive stone door, ten meters tall and carved with images of warriors and flames. Ra's placed his hand against the stone, and hidden mechanisms ground to life. The door swung open.

Beyond was a cavern so vast it felt like stepping into the belly of the world.

The ceiling soared thirty meters overhead, high enough that shadows gathered in the upper reaches despite the dozens of torches burning along the walls. Those torches gave off an eerie blue-green light. The floor was smooth stone, polished to a mirror shine, and the walls were lined with weapon racks, armor stands, and training equipment.

Yet none of it commanded as much attention as the figures gathered at the center of the cavern.

One thousand members of the League of Assassins stood in perfect formation.

They wore identical dark uniforms, and their faces were hidden behind masks that revealed only their eyes. Those eyes stared straight ahead with the empty discipline of soldiers awaiting orders. Some held swords. Others carried bows. A number of them bore modern firearms fitted with suppressors, while several sniper rifles rested in neatly secured cases.

Ra's descended the final steps and stood before his army.

"Gotham. That city of sin has endured for too long. It corrupts everything it touches. It breeds darkness, feeds on despair, and stands as a symbol of humanity's failure to govern itself. Batman's weakness and his compromise are proof that Gotham can't be saved through half-measures. He captures criminals and feeds them into a justice system designed to fail. He believes he is holding the line, when in truth, he enables greater tragedies with every villain he refuses to kill."

He began to pace slowly before the assembled assassins.

"For centuries, the League of Assassins has worked in the shadows. We have toppled tyrants, ended wars, and prevented disasters that would have claimed millions of lives. We have served as the unseen hand guiding humanity away from extinction. But the world is accelerating toward collapse. Population grows without restraint. Resources are vanishing. The environment is dying."

He stopped and turned to face the army.

"The time for secrecy has ended. The world will witness what true order looks like. Gotham will become the example. We will cleanse it with fire and steel. The world will learn that redemption cannot exist without destruction. From the ashes, we will build something stronger. There is another purpose. A god will come to Gotham. Trigon will be drawn by the chaos and suffering we unleash. When he takes physical form, we will spill his blood and use it to restore the Lazarus Pit. This isn't merely conquest. It's the survival of the League. And through our survival, the salvation of the world."

He raised his right hand and clenched it into a fist.

"Gotham is our target. Its purification is our objective, and the acquisition of divine essence remains secondary. Show no mercy and allow no hesitation. You are the blade that cuts away the rot, and the fire that purges the disease."

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then every assassin moved at once. As one, they dropped to a single knee. Their right hands pressed against their chests while their heads bowed in discipline. Not a single voice spoke, yet the synchronized movement carried the force of an oath.

Ra's lowered his hand and nodded to Talia.

She stepped forward and addressed the army, "Board the transports!"

The assassins rose and advanced as one body. They flowed toward the tunnels at the far end of the cavern.

Ra's watched them depart.

This was for the survival of the League. This was for the future he intended to create. And this was for a world cleansed of its sickness.

Gotham would burn. Trigon would be hunted.

And Bruce would soon face his final choice.
