Chapter 70 - Rule No. 71: Don’t Pretend You’re Just Friends

The problem wasn't that things were confusing.

The problem was that they weren't.

Aira noticed it the moment she laughed too easily at something Reyhan said.

The moment her day felt lighter just because he showed up.

The moment friend stopped fitting, no matter how hard she tried to use the word.

They weren't broken.

They weren't healing anymore.

They were hovering.

And hovering was dangerous.

They were walking back from class when Reyhan suddenly stopped.

"You ever feel like we're lying to ourselves?" he asked.

Aira's steps slowed.

"About what?"

"About this," he said quietly.

"About pretending it's casual."

She didn't answer immediately.

Because honesty was already pressing against her ribs.

"I don't know how to call it," she said finally.

"But I know it's not 'just friends.'"

Reyhan nodded, like he'd been waiting for that.

"I don't want to pretend anymore," he admitted.

"Not after everything."

They sat on the low wall near the courtyard.

No crowd.

No audience.

"I'm scared to name it," Aira said.

"Because naming it means responsibility."

Reyhan looked at her.

"And not naming it means dishonesty."

That landed.

"I don't want to rush," she said.

"Neither do I," he replied.

"But I don't want to hide either."

They sat in silence, the kind that felt charged instead of awkward.

Aira exhaled slowly.

"I don't want to keep pretending I don't care the way I do," she said.

Reyhan's voice softened.

"Me neither."

That was it.

No confession.

No promises.

Just truth stepping closer to the surface.

When they stood to leave, Reyhan said quietly,

"Whatever this is… I want it to be real."

Aira nodded.

"So do I," she replied.

And for the first time, almost didn't feel like avoidance.

It felt like honesty waiting for the right moment.

RULE #71: Don't pretend you're just friends.

Because denying what you feel doesn't protect you—

it just delays the truth.
