Chapter 37 Whispers of Warmth in High Hrothgar

Inside High Hrothgar where the cold air lingered like a silent guardian and the faint glow of candles painted trembling shadows across the ancient stone walls Astrid slowly stirred awake.

A thin veil of mist drifted near the floor, the kind that rose from breath meeting freezing air. Outside the heavy doors, the wind whispered like distant spirits moving through the mountain peaks, its echo slipping faintly into the great hall.

Astrid's eyelashes fluttered as she opened her eyes. Her body, wrapped in a thick but worn blanket, felt the immediate kiss of the icy atmosphere. She inhaled softly, the air crisp enough to sting her lungs.

She pushed herself up, strands of her golden hair falling over her face in loose, messy waves.

Her gaze landed on Alex.

He was sitting beside her bedroll, back resting lightly against a carved pillar. His posture was slightly slouched from exhaustion, as though he had forced himself to stay awake long into the night. His arms were folded loosely across his chest, and his eyes gentle but alert were fixed entirely on her sleeping form.

Even in the dim candlelight, Astrid could see the tiny signs of fatigue: the subtle droop at the corner of his eyes, the way his breath wavered whenever he fought back sleep.

Warmth bloomed in her chest.

Without thinking, she reached out.

Her fingers brushed through his hair, slow and delicate, as if tracing something sacred. Alex's hair was warm at the roots but cold at the tips from the surrounding air. Her fingertip grazed the shell of his ear and he shivered slightly, not from cold, but from her touch.

Look at that face… so peaceful. So adorably helpless while he's guarding me, she thought, her heart softening.

I won't let anything in this world harm that face. Never.

Alex stirred beneath her touch. His brows twitched lightly before his eyelids fluttered open, sleepy and confused at first. Then his eyes widened with recognition then worry when he saw her awake.

"Astrid… you're up?" he asked, voice hushed but urgent. He straightened instantly, leaning closer, his hand hovering near her cheek as if afraid she might collapse again. "Are you hurt? Anything sore? Are you okay?"

Astrid's lips curved into a small, amused smile at the sight of Alex panicking over her.

The cool candlelight shimmered in her blue eyes, making them look like twin flames caught in ice. She leaned slightly forward her taller form casting a delicate shadow over him and gently pinched his nose between her fingers.

"I'm fine, my man," she whispered, her teasing voice warm enough to melt the frost around them.

Alex flinched at the pinch, rubbing his nose with a soft groan.

"Ow hey…"

But Astrid's fond gaze made his complaint dissolve instantly. Her expression alone felt like someone had wrapped a warm cloak around him in this freezing, stone-carved temple.

She stayed quiet for a heartbeat, just looking at him really looking her eyes full of relief and affection. The air between them felt warmer than any fire.

"Mm," Alex murmured, letting a slow smile spread across his face, "looks like you really are feeling better… my beautiful lady."

Astrid's cheeks flushed faintly at the compliment, her breath forming a soft little cloud that drifted between them in the cold air.

The vast halls of High Hrothgar loomed around them, echoing with a silence so pure it felt ancient. The cold was ever-present, creeping through the cracks in the stones, making even their breaths look like pale smoke. A faint mist clung low to the floor, drifting lazily in the candlelight as if the mountain itself exhaled beneath them.

After a moment, Alex settled onto her bedroll. Earlier he had slept apart, not wanting to disturb Astrid while she recovered from the Greybeards' ritual but now, with her awake, he wanted nothing more than to be close.

Astrid nudged him lightly with her elbow, voice lowering into a shy, grumbling murmur.

"Hey… move closer. I'm cold. My skin gets sulky if it doesn't touch yours."

Alex laughed softly under his breath, amused at how a warrior as fierce as her could sound so adorably needy.

He shifted closer until their shoulders brushed, then their arms, then their legs.

"My body doesn't seem capable of staying away from you anyway," he whispered, eyes half-lidded as he admired her face from up close.

Astrid felt her heart flutter an unfamiliar warmth pooling in her chest. Despite being taller and usually more dominant, moments like this made her feel strangely shy. Her fingers brushed his cheek, her thumb lingering just a second too long as she caressed the faint warmth on his skin.

They lay together though neither of them even tried to sleep.

Astrid felt him steady breathing on his neck, warm and comforting.

Alex could feel his heartbeat through the chest, each soft thump grounding him in the quiet, sacred stillness of the mountain.

It was as though High Hrothgar, with all its cold, ancient silence, had wrapped around them like a protective shell. As if, just for a few hours, the world outside had never known war or dragons or loss.

Astrid shifted closer, their bodies brushing a little more.

Her hand slid down along his side, slow and teasing and touch places that are not suitable to be touched just enough to make Alex inhale sharply.

"Astrid! " he whispered, voice tight, "the Greybeards are sleeping! And you know what they'll say in the morning if they hear anything, right?"

He wasn't wrong.

The place was so silent that even the softest creak of shifting wood echoed faintly into the distant halls.

Astrid lifted her head and pressed her lips to his ear her warm breath tickling his skin, sending a shiver down his spine.

She gave a small, naughty nibble, her smile playful against his ear.

"Come on, Alex…" she whispered, voice low and husky with mischief,

"I want you"

Alex swallowed hard, cheeks burning, heart thundering louder than the mountain winds outside.

But suddenly

soft footsteps echoed through the vast stone hall.

Both of them froze instantly.

Astrid's breath hitched, her entire body tensing. Instinctively she pressed herself against Alex's back, her chest molding against him. He felt her rapid heartbeat thumping through the thin layers of cloth fast, nervous, warm.

Alex's own heart wasn't any calmer; it hammered against his ribs like it wanted to escape. The cold air of High Hrothgar suddenly felt razor-sharp against his skin.

They quickly shut their eyes, bodies stiffening as they pretended to be asleep.

Astrid tucked her chin against Alex's shoulder, and he felt her breath tremble, feather–soft against his neck.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

The footsteps came closer… the faint shuffle of cloth… a slow exhale from an Elder.

Alex dared to crack one eye open.

It was only Wulfgar face half-asleep, beard messy from tossing in bedrolls, quietly making his way toward the door with the sluggish determination of a man needing to relieve himself.

Alex exhaled the breath he had been holding.

"Whew… that was close," he whispered, his voice barely more than a warm breath against Astrid's cheek.

Before she could say anything, Alex lifted a finger and flicked her forehead lightly.

Astrid blinked and jerked back just a little.

"Ow why did you do that?" she whispered sharply, rubbing the spot with exaggerated hurt.

Alex turned his body to face her, expression a mix of annoyance and affection.

"Control yourself," he scolded softly, though there was no real anger behind it. "We almost got caught, you know."

Astrid's lower lip pushed forward in a tiny pout the kind she tried to hide, but always failed.

Her brows pinched together, and she looked away as her shoulders sank just a bit, embarrassed.

The sight melted Alex instantly.

He lifted a hand and brushed aside her long, golden hair, tucking it gently behind her ear. His fingers lingered for just a second on her cheek, feeling the warmth blooming beneath her skin.

"It's okay, sweetheart," he said, voice low and comforting.

"We'll do all that somewhere private. Right now… we're just guests here. So try to tame that wild side of yours, alright?"

Astrid looked back at him slowly, her blue eyes softened and shining beneath the candlelight.

Then she slipped her arm around his waist, pulling him closer until their bodies pressed together from chest to knee.

Her voice dropped deep, sultry, sincere.

"Alright…" she murmured.

Her lips hovered dangerously close to his, close enough that her warm breath washed over his face, sending sparks across his skin.

"Only because you asked."

Alex's breath caught.

His cheeks were warm, his heart skipping a beat maybe two.

"O-okay…" he managed, completely flustered.

Then Astrid slowly turned around, her eyes sparkling with mischief. Before she could say a word, Alex leaned in gently and teasingly slid his hand over her chest, and paly a bit, She didn't pull away; instead, a sly smirk tugged at the corners of her lips, her gaze locking with his in a silent challenge.

"And who said you need to know the place to do something like that, hmm?" she teased, voice low and sultry.

Alex's grin widened, his eyes gleaming with playful defiance. "Well… your beautiful face pressed so close to me and, uh… other tempting parts made it impossible to hold back." He chuckled softly, his breath warm against her neck.

Before things could escalate, Astrid's hand rose to stop him gently on his wrist. But instead of pulling away, Alex shifted effortlessly, wrapping his arms around her from behind. His forearm rested softly across her stomach, a subtle anchor of comfort and closeness.

"Okay, enough teasing for tonight," she said with a soft chuckle, her voice now tender but firm. "Let's just sleep."

The room fell into a quiet hush, the only sound their steady breathing. After a few moments, when the world outside felt miles away, Astrid's voice came out barely above a whisper, fragile yet filled with meaning.

"Alex… I love you."

Alex's eyes, still wide open in the dim light, softened as a gentle smile spread across his face. "I love you, too," he replied, voice warm and certain.

Wrapped in each other's embrace, they finally surrendered to sleep, hearts beating quietly in harmony two inseparable souls in the peaceful stillness of High Hrothgar's night.
