For a fragment, revealing its true body comes at great cost, consuming a portion of its already limited soul. Thus, most remain in what is called the common form.
The common form has two parts: a black cloak and a mask of stone. The cloak conceals the body, but in strong winds it unravels into a swirling cloud, a storm of black silk drifting in the air. The mask, carved from stone-like matter, is shaped like a skull with hollow eyes. Its shade ranges from deep violet to near black, depending on how much of the fragment's soul remains. Each mask is slightly unique, echoing the lost features of a self it once was—or of some part of one.
Beyond the mask lies the true form, but this is never fixed. It shifts according to many factors: the traits of those it has consumed, the remnants of its predecessors, even the body part from which the fragment itself was first made.
