Chapter 44 - 039: beacon

at 4 AM of day 201, the trucks set to motion. The silence of their movement blended with the stillness around them. The road was mostly clear, with an occasional black rock or a corpse appearing every mile or two.

As they continued driving on the clear, sandy ground, the truck's sensors detected a gradual decrease in radiation levels. Though still worse than no radiation, it gave them hope — maybe somewhere out there, people could survive.

After twelve hours on the road, the colossal building came into view. The shadow it cast grew darker and more imposing as they approached. With the fading light of the sun, they deemed it safer to stop for the night and resume their travel at dawn.

The next day(202), 4 AM again, they resumed. Hours went by quickly until, just before midday, the towering rocket launch station appeared on the horizon, one of eight in the vast complex.

arrival

After another two hours of driving, they reached their first destination. Within about 30 kilometers from the launch station, they saw it: the shipment.

Fourteen massive trucks stood before them, twice as tall and slightly wider than the ones they're driving. Nearby, two large military helicopters rested on the ground along with four military vehicles, each able to carry four passengers. With the sheer size of that convoy, the supplies felt endless. Enough sustenance for years to come.

Once they reached it, most of them took a brief rest. Wagner, Steffi, Egon, and Charlotte stayed active. They inspected the shipment, strategized transfer, and tested the smaller vehicles. For two hours, They planned every detail, to ensure the operation is as efficient as possible.

Before dinner, Egon and Charlotte, the leaders of the group, called a team meeting. Tomorrow, the mission team would split. Some would remain to transfer the supplies. The rest would proceed with the second purpose of this mission: repairing the water purification station in the heart of the residents' area. With a smaller number, the city is more dangerous, yet time demanded efficiency.

(If you're wondering why they're moving the stuff into their own trucks instead of just driving the already loaded trucks, then you have successfully spotted a plot hole that I will fix right now.

I already said that these trucks are twice as tall and slightly wider, so they will not fit in the vehicles elevator. Also, they don't need all of the stuff in the shipment. They have to get only the necessary stuff. the third and most important reason is plot convenience.)
