Chapter 35 - Weapons have no will

[1st POV]

"You don't want prostitutes? Why not?" I asked Denji while drinking a thick milkshake. You had to suck hard just to drink it through the straw. It was because of the insane amount of cream added.

"Because they are disgusting," Denji said. He had his own orange juice to drink.

"But the deal you made with your new buddy is the same, right? But you saved her cat instead of paying money. What's the difference?" I asked, genuinely curious why he drew that line.

I always wondered why a horny guy like him refused to just hire prostitutes. I thought maybe it was because he was still a minor but it's not like there weren't ways to find a way. Especially when I offered it to him.

"The Yakuza I worked for used to have them all the time. The things they do are disgusting," he said, "Even if I touch their boobs, it'd be like eating dirt,"

That was surprising. There were things he found disgusting. For reference, Denji literally ate scab. The hard crust that formed on wounds.

"You saw them give rimjobs or something?"

"What's that mean," he asked.

"....On second thought, I don't want to talk about it," I said while looking at my straw. It was a hole and I was sucking out thick substance....yeah no.

I saw a familiar face from the transparent glass of the restaurant wall. So I was not surprised when the door opened and Makima strode in with confidence in her gait.

"Miss Makima..." Denji on the other hand was surprised.

She came to our table and stood beside us. She looked at me for a second, thinking and waiting for a moment before she turned to Denji.

"Scoot over Denji," she said.

"O-oH. Okay," Denji moved to the corner, giving space for Makima to sit down.

He was flustered and seemed kinda honored that she decided to sit beside him instead of me. He gave me a look, a silent scream of celebrating which made me chuckle.

"Division 4 did a good job with the extermination of the Bat Devil," she said after sitting down.

"Well thank you," I said.

"But you wouldn't hear that again. The Public Safety Commission claims that you are simply dealing with the mess you made," she added.

"No shit, they'll find any excuse to fuck me over. All government sectors are the same," I said, drinking out of the straw.

"Wait, so we are not getting a reward or anything for taking down the Bat Devil?" Denji asked. The normal small fry devils were compulsory but starting from Devils who could speak, the Public Safety Commission usually added bonus rewards for taking them down.

"I mean, it was Jin who killed it but I helped," Denji said when she gave him a look.

"It will all go into collateral repairs," she said.

"This is what I told you about Denji. You can't go around destroying things while killing devils. You need to be careful, even when your life is on the line. There was this one time where I took a mission to kill this powerful devil. It was powerful enough to shit out devils on the same caliber as the Bat Devil. But after defeating it, I got a handshake," I said.

"No way," Denji muttered in disbelief.

"You razed a town. The whole town," Makima added with a deadpan. Also known as her normal face.

"The town razed itself," I said, leaning back, "And if you don't accept that answer, then the devil did it. It had spread its root throughout the whole place, way before I went there to kill it. What did they expect me to do?"

"Fair. I agree that was their fault," she said and then continued, "But not this time. It was proven that Power was the one who helped the Bat Devil regenerate and allowed it to go on a rampage. She is a member of your division,"

I nodded after a thought, "That's fair then,"

I picked up some fries and threw them in my mouth. Tasted soggy, not good at all.

"Can I try your milkshake?" she asked suddenly.

"I can order a new one for you," I said and was about to call the waiter.

"But I want yours. It looks different," she said. Then she added after a few seconds, "Please?"

I grumbled while pushing my milkshake towards her. She had a small smile on her face when she pulled it close to her face and drank it from the same straw.

Her cheeks hollowed due to the thickness of the shake and she made eye contact with me the whole time.

This girl...

What a different breed indeed.

"This could kill a person," was her comment after she took a sip. "But it's good,"

She pushed the milkshake back to me after she was done. She watched closely while I continued to drink using the same straw.

"That's an indirect kiss," Denji said what was on my mind.

"You got some white under there," I said while touching my chin, telling her where she got the cream stain.

Her unchanging face somehow looked disappointed when she wiped it off by herself. What did she expect? This wasn't some romance movie or should I say a trashy fanfic since I'm in Chainsaw Man.

She turned to Denji who was beside her. She gave him one of those smiles she used to give me when I first joined.

"We heard reports from the civilians in the surrounding. It seemed you saved a lot of people while fighting the Bat Devil. Good job Denji," she praised him.

And he seemed to melt under her compliment like a dog wagging its tail.

"Could you leave us alone for a minute while I discuss some things with Jin?" she asked after the compliment.

And the imaginary tail wagging stopped.

Denji slowly turned his head towards me, looking for confirmation. He didn't see it but I saw the way her eyes narrowed dangerously at that.

I gave a nod to Denji, "Give us a minute,"

"Okay," Denji said finally and got out from his seat.

"Here, take these with you," I said, handing him a bucket of fries and also some cake. He moved to the last seat in the restaurant.

Makima turned to me after he left.

"The security camera confirmed Denji and Power leaving their patrol areas. We also found a pool of blood near the building where we believe the Bat Devil was hiding. The blood has been confirmed to be Denji's blood," she said.

"With this, you can imagine what happens between them. Denji has not revealed anything so it's clear that he doesn't want to tell on the Blood Fiend. I could make a report about this and the Blood Fiend would be put down for crossing a Devil Hunter," she said and let me digest the information.

"They identified the blood already? You guys sure work fast," I commented instead.

"The Fox Devil has its uses," she answered.

"Before doing anything drastic that could result in the death of the Blood Fiend, I wanted to get your opinion since she is a member of your division," she said.

"So what do you think Jin?"

"Power should not be put down yet. Denji has already told me what happened. She betrayed him because the Bat Devil held her cat hostage, she had no choice in the matter so she should be given a chance to prove herself," I said.

"You really think her actions are justified because of a cat? Many people could've died, even Denji," she said.

"You know how crazy people can be for their pets. You have dogs right? You should know," I said.

She became silent and thoughtful for a while. Then she admitted.

"I understand her actions. I will do anything for my pets. Especially those that are difficult to control," she said.

I shrugged, "So you know. I think the fact that a devil is capable of such empathy should be taken as a green flag. So in truth, Power just proved her true nature. And it is not that of a selfish and dangerous devil,"

"If that is your stance then I will do it....for you," she said.

"Thanks a bunch," I replied, finally emptying my shake.

..

..

"Could you order another milkshake for me? And teach me how to make it like yours," she said.

Instead of discussing about work related things, I spent the rest of the time teaching her how to make any drink the Pig Devil way.

What the fuck is diabetes am I right?

[3rd POV]

The garden was beautiful, filled with a variety of different flowers, some originating from Japan, others from Russia and a few from China. It was a collection of beauty that was not meant to exist together in one place.

But still the garden was small, too small to be anything impressive. It was a rectangle of soil boxed in by concrete, tucked behind the house where the sun reached it only in the morning.

Reze stood barefoot on the stone path, her soft feet were pink due to the rough surface they stood on. She had a watering can in her hands.

Water spilled out in a soft arc, darkening the soil as it soaked in. The sound was steady and gentle. Droplets hit the leaves, slid down petals, and vanished into the dirt. It was quiet enough that that was the only sound she could hear.

She liked this part of the day.

She moved slowly and carefully not to flood the roots. Her dress brushed her knees when she bent, revealing supple thighs. There was a smile on her face that was rarely seen on her face, it was different from the mask she wore every day. Some dirt stained her face, while her cheeks were flushed, perhaps due to previous work.

The scene looked so peaceful and her own appearance made it feel like it was a scene that should never be watched by the male gaze.

As she continued to water her flowers and tilted the can, something moved near the step of a flower pot.

A small worm, pale and thin in its appearance, was inching along the stone.

Reze stopped pouring.

She set the watering can aside and crouched down. She watched the worm for a long time before she reached her hand out to it.

The worm coiled instinctively, reacting to the heat of her skin. She offered her palm and after a while, the worm climbed onto her hand.

Reze lifted it up, holding the worm in front of her face before she tilted her head and brought it close to her ear. The worm wriggled once and then entered inside her ear.

Immediately, Reze's body tensed up and her eyes became unfocused.

Images surfaced in her mind that were not hers. She was in rooms she had never stood in. She heard voices speaking a language she had not heard in months. She received instructions folded neatly into memories. She saw faces without names, heard names without faces.

The worm dissolved inside her brain.

When Reze straightened, the garden looked the same.

But the atmosphere was completely different now.

She picked up the watering can and continued where she had left off.

The water dripped out, once again becoming the only sound in the silence.

Reze smile was gone.

..

The Spy Devil was a contracted devil working for the USSR.

It was a devil that came from people's fear of being stalked, spied on and their fear of something intruding their privacy. It was a powerful devil but with a set of abilities that were not quite fit for combat.

The USSR had found the perfect use of said abilities. It was how they had the most powerful spy network in the whole world. It was how they could keep sleeper agents and activate them seemingly unnoticed.

There were never any traces, no way to track it down either.

It did not even send messages or communicate instructions. Information was given and received in the form of memories.

And as Reze continued to water her flowers and proceesed her memories, a voice continued to hammer inside her head. It was not actually a voice, or words, more like she could vividly feel the intetion and the meaning behind them.
