This pirate ship belonged to one of the most famous pirate crews in the New World, second only to the Four Emperors. It was the main vessel of the Donquixote Family—one of the kings of the underworld—the Numancia Flamingo.
On the ship's deck, El and Doflamingo sat beneath umbrellas, chatting as they enjoyed the sea breeze.
"Joker…"
El, who was drinking a glass of juice, looked at Doflamingo—dressed in beachwear across from him—and asked, "How did you awaken your Devil Fruit?"
Because reading memories requires time, the brief handshake he had shared with Doflamingo was far from sufficient to access his distant memories. Therefore, El took advantage of his growing closeness with Doflamingo over the past month—having become his ally—to seek advice regarding the advanced usage of Devil Fruits: awakening.
Each of the three types of Devil Fruit has its own awakening.
Among them, the awakening of Paramecia-type Devil Fruits affects the surroundings and greatly strengthens the user.
The awakening of Zoan-type Devil Fruits greatly enhances the user's resilience and combat power; however, failed awakening may cause side effects.
El's Float-Float Fruit is a rule-type ability with a singular function. Its user, like Logia-type Devil Fruit users, only needs to touch an object; this consumes stamina to seize control and render it buoyant.
However, El knows that this is not Devil Fruit Awakening, but rather the Float-Float Fruit's basic ability.
Based on his conjecture, if the Float-Float Fruit awakens, he should be able to control surrounding objects without physical contact. Alternatively, it might become similar to the Paw-Paw Fruit, granting him the ability to manipulate intangible things.
For instance, airflow and shock waves formed by air—these are intangible. While El can seize control of a flying slash created by tearing airflow, he cannot seize control of the resulting shock wave.
Once the fruit awakens and he can manipulate intangible elements, he may be able to control blizzards or storms. Thus, the Float-Float Fruit might grant him dominion over natural forces, akin to Logia-type Devil Fruits.
Regardless of the result of the Float-Float Fruit awakening, it is a great improvement for him.
In the former case, El would effectively have a controlled field around him; in the latter, he would become a true lord of the sky.
Therefore, after mastering the Six Styles (Rokushiki), Hakoku Sovereignty, Emission, Internal Destruction, and Conqueror's Coating, El felt it was time to concentrate on Devil Fruit awakening.
"Hey, you're only thirteen years old, yet you're already thinking about Devil Fruit awakening. Such talent and dedication are truly enviable."
Doflamingo clicked his tongue slightly, then shook his head and said, "Actually, I don't know exactly how Devil Fruit awakening works. The awakening of a Devil Fruit is just like Conqueror's Haki—it cannot be acquired through training at all."
"There is only one way to awaken a Devil Fruit, and that is to rely on what we call 'talent.'"
"Some people have vast Haki reserves, yet no matter how hard they strive, they cannot master its higher applications. I am the prime example."
He paused briefly, then laughed self-deprecatingly. "Actually, I'm just like you, El. When I was less than ten years old, I had already awakened Conqueror's Haki."
"But now? I'm 34 years old, and I still haven't mastered Conqueror's Coating, yet you're only thirteen this year and have already done so."
"It's as if you were blessed by the world—born with powerful Haki and a unique talent for honing it."
"My talent for Haki is quite mediocre, but I am extremely gifted in Devil Fruit development."
"In my twenties, I mastered Devil Fruit awakening."
"If you wish to awaken your Devil Fruit, you must work diligently to improve your proficiency with it, just as you do when developing your Haki."
"Then, if you truly possess that talent, you need only grasp that elusive feeling—imperceptible to the naked eye—and your Devil Fruit ability will ascend to another level."
"I see."
El was slightly taken aback. However, he knew of a second method to awaken a Devil Fruit: through sustained combat against others who have also awakened their Devil Fruits of the same type. Moreover, he speculated that Logia-type Devil Fruit awakening would permanently affect the surrounding area.
For example, Aokiji versus Akainu, both Logia users, or Kaido versus Luffy, both Mythical Zoan users.
If El wishes to awaken the Float-Float Fruit, there are only two ways.
The first is to diligently improve his proficiency with his Devil Fruit, as Doflamingo suggested, and then grasp that elusive sensation.
The second is to clash with powerful opponents who wield Devil Fruits of the same type, harnessing the pressure of life-or-death combat to once again sublimate his will and awaken his fruit.
Aside from these two, there is likely no third method.
