[ Location: Hawkins National Laboratory - The Pit ][ Date: November 4th, 1984 - Saturday Night (10:45 PM) ]
We descended in the elevator. The lights flickered. The air was thick with spores.
Hopper held his shotgun. El stood in the middle, silent.
I stood at the back. I didn't need a weapon. I felt the metal of the elevator shaft singing to me. With a thought, I could crush this box into a cube.
'Level 10 is intoxicating.'
The doors opened.
We walked onto the catwalk.
The Gate was massive. A glowing, red scar in reality, pulsing like a heart. The Mind Flayer was visible through the rift—a towering storm of shadow and hatred.
"There," Hopper pointed.
We walked toward it. But we weren't alone.
A Demodog dropped from the ceiling. Then another.
Hopper raised his gun. BOOM. He took one out.
El raised her hand. She flung one into the abyss.
"Save your strength, El!" I yelled over the roar of the rift. "Focus on the Gate! I got the dogs!"
I stepped forward.
Three Demodogs charged down the catwalk.
I didn't wave my hand. I just looked at them.
'Sit.'
[ Ability Active: Telekinesis (Zone of Control). ]
Gravity increased tenfold around the monsters. They slammed into the grating, their bones crunching under their own weight. They whined, pinned to the floor.
"Whoa," Hopper muttered.
"Go!" I shouted.
We reached the extraction point. Hopper loaded El into the cradle.
"You got this, kid," Hopper said.
El raised both hands. She screamed.
The rift began to close. The red light fought back.
[ Location: The Tunnels - The Hub ][ Time: Simultaneous ]
"Wake up, Steve!" Dustin slapped Steve's face.
Steve Harrington groaned, opening his eyes. He was in a hole. In the ground.
"Where... am I?"
"The tunnels," Max said, checking her watch. "We're burning it down."
Steve scrambled up, grabbing his bat. "You... you drove? You're twelve!"
"I'm thirteen!" Max snapped. "And I drive better than Billy."
"We have to move," Mike said. "Hopper and El are at the Gate."
They ran into the hub. It was a pulsating nightmare of vines and membranes.
"Pour it!" Mike ordered.
They doused the hub in gasoline.
Steve stood guard, bat ready. "I can't believe I'm doing this."
"Light it up!" Lucas yelled.
Steve threw the lighter.
WHOOSH.
The tunnels erupted in flames. The vines screamed.
[ Location: The Gate ]
The Mind Flayer felt the fire. It shrieked.
Through the rift, the shadow lunged. It wasn't trying to enter. It was trying to stop El.
El was levitating now, blood pouring from both nostrils. She was screaming, channeling every ounce of pain and anger she had.
"More!" Hopper yelled, firing at a Demodog that had climbed up the side.
"Vivan!" El screamed. "Help!"
The rift was fighting her. It was heavy. Too heavy.
I stepped up beside her.
"I'm here," I said.
I raised my hands. I didn't push the gate. I grabbed the fabric of space around it.
'System. Max Output. Don't blow my brain up.'
[ Ability Active: Telekinesis (Dimensional Seal). ]
My power latched onto the edges of the rift. I pulled.
El pulled.
We synchronized.
[ Synergy Detected: 200% Output. ]
The Gate began to shrink rapidly.
But the Mind Flayer wasn't done.
From the elevator shaft behind us, a roar echoed.
The Demodogs. The ones from the tunnels. They were coming back.
"Hopper!" I yelled.
"I see 'em!" Hopper turned, pumping his shotgun.
A wave of monsters surged onto the catwalk. Dozens of them.
Hopper fired. Boom. Boom.
But there were too many.
"They're going to overrun us!" Hopper shouted.
I looked at El. She was locked in. If I stopped helping her, the Gate would open again. If I didn't stop, Hopper would die.
'Multitasking. Level 10 Perk.'
I kept my right hand focused on the Gate with El.
I turned my left hand toward the horde.
'Wall.'
A shimmering barrier of force sprang up across the catwalk. The Demodogs slammed into it, piling up like World War Z zombies.
"Hold them back!" I gritted my teeth, blood running down my chin.
"Closer!" El screamed.
The Gate was shrinking. A sliver remained.
The Mind Flayer reached through—a massive shadowy claw.
"NO YOU DON'T!" I roared.
I released the barrier. I grabbed the Mind Flayer's claw with my mind and shoved it back into its own dimension.
"EL! NOW!"
El unleashed a final, earth-shattering scream.
BOOM.
The Gate slammed shut. The red light vanished.
The Demodogs on the catwalk froze. They squealed. And then, like puppets with their strings cut, they all dropped dead.
Silence.
El collapsed. Hopper caught her.
I stumbled, falling to my knees. My head felt light.
"We did it," Hopper whispered, looking at the sealed wall.
I looked at my hands. They were shaking.
Suddenly, the walkie-talkie on Hopper's belt crackled.
"Chief? El? Vivan? It's Jonathan. The fire... it worked. Will is... he's him again. The thing is gone."
Hopper let out a laugh. A tired, broken laugh.
"Copy that," Hopper said. "We're coming home."
I lay back on the metal grating, staring at the sterile lab ceiling.
[ Quest Complete: Close the Gate. ][ Reward: 2000 Points. ][ Bonus: MVP (Damage Dealt/Damage Mitigated). Reward: +500 Points. One requirement has been fulfilled. ]
I closed my eyes.
'Level 10,' I thought, drifting into exhaustion. 'And I still just want a nap.'
