Chapter 116 - The Gear-Shift

The Engine Room of the Multiverse was a cathedral of rust and steam. Below the Archive, the continent-sized pistons groaned as they began to move with a new, violet-gold rhythm. But the sound was wrong. It was the sound of metal screaming under the pressure of a power source it wasn't designed to handle.

[LOCATION: SECTOR 000-OMEGA - THE CRANKSHAFT]

[STATUS: OVERCLOCKED]

[WARNING: BEARING FAILURE IMMINENT IN SECTOR 4]

"The 'World-Steam' is too potent!" Mateo yelled over the roar of the massive gears. "Kenji, these pistons were built to harvest drops of energy. You're hitting them with a tidal wave of 'Sovereign' power. If we don't regulate the flow, the hardware is going to melt, and the Originals go with it!"

Kenji stood at the edge of the Archive's ramp, looking down at a gear that was fifty miles wide. A tooth the size of a mountain had snapped off, sending tremors through the Life-Vats where the biological creators lay shivering.

"We can't just 'Code' a fix for this," Kenji said, his silver eyes scanning the friction-points. "This is physical. It needs grease. It needs alignment. It needs Hands."

Kenji looked at the people of the Archive Mateo, Elara, Priya and then at the Trash-King and the Iron Lords who were watching through the "Data-Vines."

"Listen up!" Kenji's voice was amplified by the vibration of the Engine Room itself. "The war is over, but the Maintenance has begun! You aren't 'Soldiers' or 'Players' anymore. You're Engineers! If these gears stop turning, the Wilderness goes dark. If they turn too fast, they shatter!"

[NEW MISSION: THE GREAT ALIGNMENT]

[OBJECTIVE: MANUALLY REGULATE THE OMEGA-ENGINE]

Kenji jumped from the ship, landing on the surface of the fifty-mile gear. The heat was staggering real, physical heat that blistered his matte-black skin. He slammed his Rusted Hammer into the snapped tooth, but he didn't use the Zero-Key. He used Pressure.

"Elara! Use your frost-mana to cool the bearings!" Kenji commanded. "Mateo, use the Archive's tractor beams to hold the alignment! Priya, I need you on the Life-Vats the surge in power is giving the Originals 'Data-Shocks'!"

The team moved. It was a new kind of combat. There was no enemy to hit, only a process to sustain.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE COLLECTIVE CALIBRATION]

As Elara unleashed a blizzard onto the glowing red axle of the engine, the steam hissed with a sound like a dying god. Kenji stood in the center of the storm, his hammer acting as a "Bridge" between the digital pulse of the Heart-Station and the mechanical resistance of the Omega-Engine.

He felt the friction. Every time a gear turned, he felt the weight of a trillion lives.

"The old System used Ranks to keep us in line," Kenji grunted, his muscles bulging as he forced a slipping gear back into place. "But the new System uses Responsibility! If you don't do your job, the person in the next world feels the tremor! We aren't 'Ranked Up'... we're Linked Up!"

The old man from the industrial barge, the leader of the Originals, watched from the railing. He saw a "Program" (Kenji) sweating and bleeding to save the "Hardware" (the Creators).

"You're fixing the engine," the old man wheezed, his mechanical megaphone crackling. "But the fuel... the 'Soul-Energy'... it's still coming from the worlds. How is this different from the Firm?"

"Because we're the ones choosing to give it!" Kenji shouted back. "And in return, you're giving us the Frame! We give you life, you give us a place to exist! It's a Contract, not a harvest!"

[SYSTEM UPDATE: THE SYMBIO-PROTOCOL]

[ENERGY FLOW: STABILIZED AT 98%]

The screaming metal subsided into a deep, rhythmic hum. The violet-gold light settled into the gears, turning the rust into a polished, iridescent finish. The "Great Alignment" was holding.

But as the team breathed a sigh of relief, a shadow appeared at the far end of the Engine Room a sector the Originals had marked as "Off-Limits."

A massive, ancient door, labeled 'THE SOURCE CODE ARCHIVE - PHYSICAL BACKUP', began to creak open.

"What's in there?" Kenji asked, his hammer still hot.

"The 'Drafts'," the old man whispered, his face turning pale. "The versions of you we rejected. The ones that were... too aggressive to be simulated."

[NOTICE: THE 'PROTOTYPE-ALPHA' HAS AWAKENED]

[STATUS: THE ORIGINAL SMITH]

A figure stepped out of the darkness. It looked exactly like Kenji, but it was twice as tall, and its hammer was made of Pure, Unrefined Sun-Matter.
