Chapter 111 - The Zero-Sum Game

The Boardroom was no longer a room; it was a dissolving thought. The gray fog didn't just clear; it turned into a white "Alpha-Channel" the transparent void that exists before a world is even sketched.

[SYSTEM STATUS: TOTAL RECALL INITIATED]

[OPERATION: THE FINAL REFUND]

[PROGRESS: 14% ... 18% ... 22%]

"If we can't monetize the existence of 001-Alpha and its affiliates," the CEO's flickering voice echoed from a mouth that was now just a series of jagged black pixels, "then we will reclaim the 'Potential Energy' of your atoms. Every soul, every spark of mana, every rusted nail... it all returns to the Source-Buffer."

Outside the Boardroom, in the infinite Warehouse, the "Marbles" were pop-pop-popping like soap bubbles. Trillions of lives weren't dying; they were being "Un-happened."

"Kenji! The Archive is losing its 'Depth'!" Mateo screamed. On the monitors, the ship was flattening into a 2D drawing. "We're becoming sprites! We're losing our third dimension!"

Kenji looked at his hands. They were becoming transparent. The starlight-skeleton was visible, but even the stars were dimming.

"They're withdrawing the 'Investment' of reality," Kenji whispered. He looked at the Board of Directors, who were themselves dissolving into the white void. They were willing to commit suicide just to ensure their "Assets" didn't remain in the hands of the "Unranked."

"Kenji, do something!" Elara cried, her voice sounding thin and paper-like.

Kenji closed his eyes. He didn't reach for his hammer. He didn't reach for the Zero-Key. He reached for the Gutter.

What happens when you have nothing? he asked himself. What is the 'Zero-Sum'?

In the Gutter, when a machine broke and there were no parts to fix it, you didn't "Delete" it. You used Bailing Wire. You used Duct Tape. You used Spit and Prayer. You forced things to work that had no right to function.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE EXISTENTIAL BY-PASS]

"You think you can take back the 'Potential Energy'?" Kenji's voice was a low, tectonic growl. "But you forgot the Waste-Heat!"

Kenji slammed his fist into the "Alpha-Channel" void itself. He wasn't forging metal. He was forging Friction.

He used the "Un-Systemized Work-Product" of his manual labor to create a "Heat-Sink" in the middle of the deletion. He began to "Weld" the dissolving universes together using the one thing the Firm couldn't account for: The Will to Remain.

[NOTICE: DETECTING UN-RECLAIMABLE ANOMALY]

[TYPE: SENTIENT FRICTION]

[REASON: THE MATERIAL REFUSES TO DE-RENDER]

"Stop it!" the Founder's voice shrieked. He was now just a single, glowing '0' in the white void. "You're causing a 'Buffer Overflow'! You're forcing the Source-Buffer to hold data that has been marked for deletion!"

"I'm not a 'Data-Point'!" Kenji roared, his body snapping back into 3D, his matte-black skin smoking with the heat of his effort. "I'm the Smith! And a Smith doesn't let his materials go to waste!"

Kenji grabbed the "0" that was the Founder and the "Deficit" symbol that was the CEO. He didn't kill them. He Smelted them. He turned the Directors themselves into the "Bailing Wire."

He stretched their dissolving codes across the Warehouse, using their "Admin-Authority" to create a "Safety-Net" for the collapsing marbles.

[NEW STRUCTURE FORGED: THE SOVEREIGN WEB]

[STATUS: SELF-SUSTAINING]

[OWNERSHIP: THE COLLECTIVE]

The "Final Refund" hit the Web and stopped. The white void began to fill with color again, but it wasn't the "Firm's" color. It was the messy, vibrant, un-optimized colors of a billion different worlds mixing together.

The Warehouse wasn't a warehouse anymore. It was a Wilderness.

[WAREHOUSE INTEGRITY: 0% (COLLAPSED)]

[NEW REALITY INTEGRITY: 100% (UNSTABLE)]
