Chapter 97 - Between the Frames

The world didn't just stop; it hung. A drop of oil from a nearby walker was suspended in mid-air, a perfect, unmoving sphere. Elara was caught in the middle of a shout, her hair frozen like a sculpture of golden silk. Even the smoke from the forges had become a solid, jagged wall of gray voxels.

[SYSTEM STATUS: TOTAL HANG]

[FRAME RATE: 0.000001 FPS]

[NOTICE: PROCESSING UNIT AT 100% CAPACITY]

Kenji felt the "Lag" in his own soul. Every thought took an eternity to form. But because he was the Source-Smith—the one who had injected "Manual Input" into the reboot—he was the only thing in this sector that wasn't tied to the global clock.

"You... shouldn't... be... moving..."

Kenji turned his head. It felt like dragging a mountain through molasses.

Zero-Chaser was there. He wasn't frozen, but he was "stuttering." Because he had spawned a trillion clones, the system couldn't decide which "him" was the original. He was flickering between positions, his body a blur of purple and black artifacts.

"You're... drowning... in your own... noise," Kenji said. Each word was a struggle against the static of a frozen universe.

Kenji looked around. The "Memory Leak" had filled the sky with a sea of unmoving, glitchy clones. To a normal warrior, this was a nightmare. To a Smith, it was a Data-Dump.

Kenji reached out and touched the air. He didn't feel oxygen; he felt the "Handles" of the clones.

If they are all copies of the same script, Kenji reasoned, then they all share the same ID.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: BATCH-PROCESS]

Kenji didn't lift his hammer. He closed his eyes and visualized the entire field of clones as a single piece of "Overstock." He wasn't going to fight them. He was going to Consolidate them.

"You... think... you can... delete... them?" Zero-Chaser's voice was a distorted groan. "I... locked... the... trash... bin."

"I'm not deleting them," Kenji whispered. "I'm Refining them."

Kenji gripped the air and pulled.

The trillion clones didn't vanish. They began to collapse inward. The "Redundant Data" was being compressed. The purple-and-black static was being crushed by Kenji's "Source-Gravity."

As the clones collapsed, the system's CPU usage began to drop. The world started to "Breathe" again.

0.1 FPS.

1.0 FPS.

10 FPS.

"No! Stop!" Zero-Chaser screamed as his flickering stabilized.

The trillion clones were gone. In their place, Kenji was holding a single, impossibly dense sphere of "Compressed Malice." It was the size of a marble, but it contained the "Weight" of a trillion entities.

[ITEM CREATED: THE SINGULARITY-BOLT]

[DESCRIPTION: A CONCENTRATED ERROR-LOG OF EVERY BETA-TESTER EXPLOIT.]

Kenji looked at Zero-Chaser. The Beta-Tester was now fully rendered, his face a mask of pure terror. Without his "Lag-Shield" and his clones, he was just a man playing with tools he didn't understand.

"You played with the engine for fun," Kenji said, his voice now moving at the speed of real-time. "But I live here."

Kenji flicked the Singularity-Bolt at Zero-Chaser.

It didn't explode. When it hit the Beta-Tester, it Unpacked.

Every glitch, every frame-drop, and every memory leak that Zero-Chaser had ever caused was suddenly forced back into his own "Character-Slot." His body began to warp. His head grew ten times its size, then shrunk to a pinprick. He began to loop through his own animations at ten thousand times the normal speed.

"UN-INSTALL! UN-INSTALL!" Zero-Chaser shrieked, his form becoming a smear of purple light.

With a final pop, Zero-Chaser didn't die; he was Ejected. He vanished from the Steam-Wastes, sent back to the "Pre-Alpha" void where the Beta-Testers had been hiding.

[THREAT NEUTRALIZED: ZERO-CHASER (DISCONNECTED)]

The world snapped back to full speed.

Elara finished her shout. "—JI, WATCH OUT!"

She stumbled forward, realizing the enemy was gone. Bjorn fell to his knees as the "Clipping" in his chest finally healed. Mateo gasped, his "Lag-Loop" finally broken.

"He's... he's gone?" Mateo asked, looking at the clear sky.

"For now," Kenji said, dropping his hand. The black skin on his palm was smoking. "But Clip and Buffer are still out there. And they'll have told the others."

"The others?" Priya asked.

"There aren't just three of them," Kenji said, looking up at the Apex Layer, the highest point in the universe. "There's an entire 'Development-Team' of those monsters. They've been waiting for the Architects to leave so they could claim the 'Admin' privileges for themselves."

Kenji looked at his team. They were exhausted, battered, and for the first time, they looked truly human in their fatigue.

"We can't just keep 'Patching' the world," Kenji said. "We have to go to the Source-Code."

"You mean the Apex?" Mateo asked. "Kenji, that's where the heart of the engine is. If we go there, we're stepping onto their home turf. They can change the laws of physics before we even take a step."

"Then we'll bring our own physics," Kenji said. He looked at the Unranked Coin and the Zero-Key. "We're going to forge a 'Portable Reality.' A workshop that travels with us."

[NEW GOAL: THE MOBILE SOURCE]

[LEVEL UP: 8 -> 9 (THE KERNEL-SMITH)]
