Chapter 78 - The Patchwork

The Star-Eater drifted into the shadow of the fortress-planet. It was a sight that defied logic: a gargantuan sphere of "Stitched Reality." You could see a continent of Victorian steam-tech bolted to a floating sea of floating neon-glass, which was in turn chained to a desert of shifting binary sand. This was the trash-heap of the multiverse, where "Garbage" had learned to build a home.

[LOCATION: THE PATCHWORK - REBEL HUB]

[POPULATION: THE DELETED]

[LAW: SURVIVAL BY COHESION]

"This place... it's beautiful," Mateo whispered, his sensors struggling to categorize the thousands of clashing art styles and physics engines. "It's like every dream the Syndicate ever had and threw away is living here at once."

"It's not a dream," Kenji said, standing up on shaky legs. His charred skin was slowly being replaced by a shimmering, obsidian-like scale a byproduct of consuming the Foundry's heat. "It's a scar. And it's huge."

They docked at Port Revision-Zero, a massive hangar made from the ribs of an ancient, celestial beast. As the ramp lowered, they weren't met by soldiers, but by a crowd of "Beta-Versions." People with three eyes, people made of living smoke, and warriors in armor that looked like it had been forged from the core of a dead star.

At the front stood an old man with a prosthetic arm made of pure, white light.

[TARGET: THE FIRST SMITH (RANK ???)]

[STATUS: VERSION 0.1 PROTOTYPE]

"You took your time, Tanaka," the old man said. He didn't use a speaker; his voice was a low-frequency hum that resonated in their bones. "We watched the Golden Foundry go dark. Nice touch, by the way. Most Outliers just try to hide. You decided to blow out the pilot light."

"I don't like being deleted," Kenji said, stepping forward. He felt a strange resonance with the old man a 'Density' that matched his own. "Who are you?"

"I'm the one who designed the first hammer," the man said, a wry smile crossing his face. "Call me Cain. I was the lead architect before the Syndicate realized they didn't want 'Architects' with a conscience. They wanted 'Adjusters' with a spreadsheet."

Cain led them through the streets of The Patchwork. It was a chaotic symphony of life. He showed them the Grand Archive, where the memories of deleted children were stored in jars of glowing liquid, and the Logic-Mills, where rebels turned Syndicate "Delete-Bolts" into fuel.

"We've been hiding in the Deep Void for eons," Cain explained, gesturing to the massive chains holding the world together. "But the Incineration Protocol you triggered... it changed things. The Overseer isn't just cleaning the drive anymore. He's preparing a Hard-Reset. He's going to wipe the entire hardware array including the Deep Void."

[CORE MISSION: STOP THE HARD-RESET]

[ESTIMATED TIME: 168 HOURS]

"How do we stop something that large?" Elara asked, her hand tightening on her frost-staff. "We just barely survived the Foundry."

"The Overseer has a physical core," Kenji said, his white eyes flashing. "The Primary Server. It's located in the Apex Layer, above even the Outer Rim. To get there, we need a key that doesn't exist in the System."

Cain stopped in front of a massive, sealed vault at the center of the city. "That's why you're here, Kenji. We have the 'Parts' for that key. We have the Source-Code of the First Revision. But no one here has a soul 'Heavy' enough to forge it. The friction would delete us instantly."

Cain looked at Kenji's flickering, unstable form. "You've consumed a sun. You're already half-deleted. You're the only one who can handle the Primordial Anvil."

[NEW SUB-QUEST: THE FORGING OF THE ZERO-KEY]

Reward: Access to the Apex Layer.

"Kenji, don't," Priya whispered, grabbing his arm. Her healing mana felt cold against his skin he was losing his "Thermal Signature." "If you forge this, you might fully dissolve. You'll become a 'Concept' with no way to turn back into a man."

Kenji looked at Priya, then at the thousands of "Deleted" people watching him with hope in their flickering eyes. He reached up and touched the Rank 0 Locket.

"A Smith's job isn't to stay safe," Kenji said softly. "It's to make sure the pieces fit. If I have to be the glue that holds the new world together, then that's what I'll be."

Kenji stepped toward the vault. As it opened, a blast of pure, unformatted energy hit the team, knocking everyone back but him. In the center of the room sat an anvil made of Solidified Void.

"Mateo, Bjorn, Elara, Priya... stay back," Kenji commanded. "This is going to get messy."

[SKILL ACTIVATED: ULTIMATE SYNTHESIS (RANK ???)]

Kenji picked up a hammer made of "Deleted Dreams" and struck the First Source-Code. The sound wasn't a clang it was the sound of a universe being born.
