Chapter 49 - The day everything changed

The room was quiet except for the soft tapping of keys.

Athena sat cross-legged on the bed, her laptop balanced comfortably between her folded legs, eyes focused, fingers moving with practiced ease. Lines, shapes, colors—designs bloomed across the screen, not for work, not for revenge, but simply to keep her mind occupied.

The door opened gently.

"Athena."

She looked up. "What's up?"

Madeline stepped in, her tone casual, almost too casual. "Nothing much. I'm good." She walked over and dropped onto the bed beside her. "What are you doing?"

"Just designing stuff for fun."

Madeline glanced at the laptop. "So… you're busy?"

Athena raised an eyebrow. "No."

Madeline nodded slowly, then smiled. "Since you're not busy, can you follow me?"

Athena frowned slightly. "Follow you where?"

"Don't worry about that." Madeline stood. "Just dress up and let's go."

Athena closed the laptop halfway, suspicion flickering in her eyes. "Okay, but you're really not going to tell me where we're going?"

"You'll know when we get there."

"And you're not taking me to a party… or a club?" Athena asked cautiously.

Madeline laughed. "Stop asking too many questions and just go dress up."

"At least let me know what I'm dressing up for."

Madeline crossed her arms. "Or you can just tell me you don't want to go."

Athena scoffed. "Why wouldn't I go?"

"Then go dress up," Madeline shot back. "And stop interrogating me."

Athena sighed in defeat. "Okay. Five minutes."

She shut the laptop, placed it on the table, and disappeared into the room. Moments later, she emerged wearing a loose white T-shirt, black jeans, white sneakers, and a small black bag slung over her shoulder. She spun once, smiling faintly.

"Am I good to go?"

Madeline looked her over and nodded. "Yeah. Let's go."

They walked out of the house together, laughter light, steps unburdened—two friends moving forward without knowing they were stepping straight toward a moment that would fracture everything they thought they understood about loyalty, love, and fate.

The door closed behind them.

And somewhere ahead, the day waited—quietly sharpening its knives.
