Chapter 30 - Face of vengeance

Morning light spilled across the school gate, bright enough to make everything feel deceptively ordinary. Students streamed past in noisy clusters, laughter and footsteps blending into a familiar hum. Madeline stood beside Athena, mid-sentence—then stopped.

She looked at her properly this time.

Something was different.

Athena's posture was straighter, her movements economical, restrained. The softness she usually carried had been tucked away, replaced by a practiced calm that sat on her like armor.

Madeline frowned slightly. "You don't even stand the same way anymore."

Athena glanced at her, lips curving. "That obvious?"

"Terrifyingly so." Madeline studied her face, searching for cracks. "Your disguise skills are no joke. I almost wonder if your mom would recognize you like this."

Athena let out a quiet breath, half amused, half distant. "That's the idea."

Madeline's expression shifted. "So you're really doing this."

"I am."

There was no hesitation in her voice, and that was what hurt the most. Madeline looked away, teeth worrying her lower lip. "I don't like it."

"I know."

"And I hate that knowing you won't stop makes me want to help instead of dragging you home and locking the doors."

Athena's smile softened. "That's why I trust you."

For a moment, Madeline said nothing. Then she turned back, eyes sharp. "Promise me something."

"Anything."

"No heroics. No recklessness. If something feels off, you leave. You don't stay to prove a point."

Athena met her gaze. "I promise."

"Say it like you mean it."

A pause. Then, steady and certain, "I will stay alive."

Madeline exhaled, the tension easing just enough for her to pull Athena into a tight hug. "Stephan and I will pick you up this evening."

"Okay."

"And don't be late."

"I won't."

Madeline stepped back and waved her off. "Go. Before I change my mind."

Athena nodded and slipped into the waiting cab. As the door closed, Madeline tapped the window.

"Athena."

She leaned closer. "Yeah?"

"Come back to me."

Athena didn't smile this time. She only nodded once.

The cab pulled away, swallowing the distance between them. From the back seat, Athena watched Madeline fade into the crowd, her reflection staring back at her in the glass—cool, composed, unreadable.

Her hands clenched slowly in her lap.

This wasn't fear.

It wasn't doubt.

It was the quiet face of vengeance, finally stepping into the world.
