Chapter 404 - Chapter 404: The Unraveling Thread

Location: Crestwood City - Multiple Districts

Time: Present Day - The Aftermath

---

Mordveil Quarter District

The streets of Mordveil Quarter were a study in urban decay—Gotham-like spires of rusted steel and crumbling concrete stretching toward a sky that never seemed to see the sun. The air was thick with the smell of exhaust and old rain. Subway entrances belched steam onto the sidewalks, and the distant rumble of trains echoed through the narrow alleys.

People moved through the streets with the quiet desperation of those who had long since accepted their place in the world. A woman in a worn coat clutched a paper bag of groceries, her eyes fixed on the ground. A man in a faded suit sat on a bench, his phone glowing in his hand, his expression blank. A group of teenagers leaned against a graffiti-covered wall, their laughter hollow, their eyes darting nervously at every passing shadow.

The neon signs flickered—some dead, some dying. A pawn shop. A liquor store. A check-cashing joint. The architecture of survival.

---

Raincrest District

Raincrest was different. Where Mordveil was decay, Raincrest was polish—a veneer of wealth that couldn't quite hide the rot beneath. The buildings were sleek, modern, their glass facades reflecting the gray sky. The streets were clean, the people well-dressed, their movements purposeful.

At the heart of Raincrest stood the Lacera Firm—a towering monolith of glass and steel. Inside, the atmosphere was one of controlled chaos. Traders sat at long desks, their eyes fixed on screens that displayed cascading numbers—vault coins, stock prices, currency exchanges. The air was thick with the smell of coffee and anxiety.

The firm was a laundering operation, though no one would ever say it aloud. Cash came in—dirty, bloody, stained with the residue of a hundred crimes—and went out as vault coins, untraceable, untouchable. The drugs—haze, drift, chalk—flowed through the city's veins, and the money flowed back to Lacera, where it was scrubbed clean.

At the head of it all sat Zhang Han—a man whose presence commanded silence, whose name was spoken in whispers, whose power was absolute. He was Huxain, a member of the Zhang family, and his reach extended far beyond the walls of his office.

---

The large LED screen in the heart of downtown Crestwood flickered with the usual advertisements—a cartoonish parody of a cat chasing a mouse, a smiling family eating at a fast-food restaurant, a sleek car driving through empty streets. The screen was a beacon of normalcy in a city that was anything but.

And then it flickered.

The cartoon cat froze mid-chase. The mouse turned to look at the camera, its eyes wide with confusion. The screen glitched, the image tearing apart like paper.

And then a new face appeared.

---

Orlando was not a face that belonged on a screen. He was young, nervous, his hands trembling as he adjusted the camera. His hair was a mess, his clothes rumpled. He looked like a man who had not slept in days—because he hadn't.

"Guys," he said, his voice cracking. "I'm Orlando. And if you could all have my attention urgently, I need to tell you something."

He paused, his eyes darting off-screen as if checking something.

"If you all thought that the illegal Effexaine trafficking scandal by the Halverns was huge... then I'd like you all to know that the muddy waters run very, very deeper."

The screen split, showing a clip—a rewind of the Crucible Grounds broadcast. Evan Torrent's body, mid-explosion, his form dissolving into dark mist. The image played back and forth, a grotesque loop.

"What you saw was real," Orlando said, his voice steady now. "And it is part of secret, top-classified tests being done with the three families of Wycliffe, Halvern, and Saiyan in cooperation with the Mysterium clan."

His voice dropped, taking on a note of quiet fury.

"They provide the financial muscle. The Mysterium clan constructs the tech equipment. AI model training machines that use human motion in sensors for compiling data for coded engineering. From what you see here, it appears dangerous—harmful to humans. But since they're using them as guinea pigs, they're too clueless to realize they're losing their lives."

He shook his head slowly, his expression one of bitter sorrow.

"Any of you ever wonder about the Halcyon Base recruitment program? The one for youth with military prospects?"

---

In Mordveil Quarter, an old woman sat on a bench beside her son. Her hand shot out, slapping his knee.

"Wait! Didn't your Molly join that Hily jibby program three years ago?"

Her son corrected her, his voice carrying a note of dawning concern. "It's the Halcyon Base recruitment program, Ma."

His expression shifted—distress, panic.

"Now that you mention it... we haven't heard from the boy ever since. Every time I try to send word, to see him... I'm always barred by them."

In Raincrest, a couple sat in the back of a cab, their eyes fixed on the screen.

"My Bunji told us..." The woman's voice broke. "During their training, he accidentally tripped in some equipment and died. We never even saw him. Never even buried him."

The man beside her wrapped an arm around her shoulders, his expression one of cold fury.

In downtown Crestwood, a man stared at his phone, his voice carrying a note of disbelief.

"Wait a minute, guys... I've seen through someone's Converchat that there was a secret operative tournament at Fenwick district. And there are currently confirmed deaths there—trainees."

His phone buzzed. A notification. An image.

He opened it.

His face went pale. He screamed.

The image was undeniable—the remnants of Marcus's body, the scattered pieces, the dark mist. An AI scan confirmed its authenticity.

The crowd erupted. Gasps. Screams. Cries of disbelief.

---

Orlando's voice carried a note of quiet resolve.

"Many who questioned these atrocities were either threatened or silenced. The power of the three families, the government connection of Halcyon Base... it's overwhelming."

He paused, his jaw tightening.

"But I lost my precious sister to them. She was kind, loving. Those animals made her lose her life. They lied to me—told me her body wasn't up to their training. But she was the most disciplined, fitness-focused girl I knew."

His hands clenched into fists.

"I went searching for answers. People discouraged me. Told me to leave it alone. So I turned to the Dank Web. I found a contact—a whistleblower who was secretly revealing the inside dealings and activities. I met many other Halcyon Base opposers there. And today, I was chosen to be the one to reveal the truth."

---

The crowd's reaction was immediate—a chorus of anger, grief, and demand for justice.

"It's the Halverns again! Seriously, just how straight-up evil is this family?!"

"They're still walking free and well!"

"They have conspirators in the county government! Wycliffe and Saiyan!"

"We've always been screwed by the guys at the top!"

Orlando's voice carried a note of quiet finality.

"No longer. We should stop being so fearful of the people at the top in Crestwood. Because if we continue, more and more innocent lives will be lost."

---

Inside the Lacera Firm, the atmosphere was one of controlled chaos. The screens displayed cascading numbers—vault coins, stock prices, currency exchanges. And then, suddenly, the numbers began to crash.

Traders panicked, their voices rising in a chorus of confusion and fear. The old man at the head of the room swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he watched the numbers plummet.

A voice cut through the chaos—bored, calm, commanding.

"What is it? Speak."

Zhang Han entered, his posture one of meditative relaxation. His eyes were half-closed, his expression serene. But the air around him seemed to grow heavy, thick with the residue of something ancient and dark. The scent of ozone and old blood filled the room.

The old man's voice trembled. "The vault coins... they're crashing. Someone's been exposing our operations. The Halverns, the Wycliffe, the Saiyan—they're all being exposed."

Zhang Han's eyes opened. The pressure in the room intensified. The old man collapsed, his body crumpling to the ground, gasping for breath.

Zhang Han walked past him, his steps unhurried. He picked up a tablet, his eyes scanning the screen.

What in the world is that shitty mortal Mexican Andreas doing? he thought. Did he decide to screw and mess with me?

A subordinate approached, his voice respectful. "Sir. You need to see this."

He showed Zhang Han the screen—a Crestwood gossip tabloid, its headline blaring:

"HALCYON BASE EXPOSED: HUMAN EXPERIMENTS, SECRET TESTS, AND THE THREE FAMILIES BEHIND IT ALL"

Zhang Han's face contorted with fury. His body trembled, his hands clenching into fists.

"Just who is responsible for all this crap?" he hissed. "How were they able to infiltrate the Crucible Grounds secretly and not be caught? They must be very dumb. They're all going to get what's coming to them. Especially that Muchacho immigrant."

---

Across the city, screens flickered with the broadcast. The Vtube Livestream exploded with comments.

User @SupportElijah: "He's right! Young ones have been going down like flies from OD to Effexaine, and now this? The cops are on the payroll of those three families!"

User @MadLove: "Something needs to be done. And maybe that psycho killer Azaqor—or Elijah kid—is who we didn't ask for, but Crestwood needs."

---

The WELB station was in chaos. The hacked transmission had been cut, but the damage was done. The Search and Capture Taskforce moved through the building, their weapons raised, their movements precise.

Chief Sarah entered the room where the transmission had originated. Her pistol was raised, her eyes scanning the empty space.

Nothing.

But on the desk, a single piece of paper lay waiting. She picked it up, her eyes scanning the crude drawing—a cartoonish emoji, its tongue sticking out, its eyes crossed.

Beneath it, a single message: "You lost, losers."

Sarah's face contorted with fury. Her voice echoed through the room.

"ELIJAH MARCUS!"

---

The city was in chaos. The truth was out. The three families were exposed.
