Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Selling a Job

As long as you find those dressed fashionably but with faces so heavy you'd think they'd lost their mother, you can't go wrong—this job the original owner can't use is bound to sell for a good price.

Wen Ran observed their clothes and expressions, quickly identifying her targets.

It was a family of three, and both mother and daughter had swollen eyes from crying. As they stepped out, the young girl comforted her mother, "Mom, don't worry. As long as you two are okay, I won't suffer in the countryside."

The woman beat her chest in anguish, "Oh my son! If there were any other way, I wouldn't let you go to the countryside alone. If something happens, we'll be powerless, just worrying endlessly."

The more she spoke, the more her tears fell like broken beads, streaming down relentlessly.

Crying, she turned abruptly, rushing into the office for young intellectuals, "No, my daughter can't go to the countryside alone. Going to the countryside? I'll go with her, I'll accompany her!"

"Mom~" the young girl broke down emotionally, "Don't be like this, please..."

The man also had tears in his eyes, "Xiao Yun, don't be impulsive, listen to me..."

"Listen to what?" Xiao Yun cried, "Listen to how you couldn't protect your daughter, boohoo, you bastard."

Xiao Yun surged forward with surprising strength, almost pulling both the man and young Chen Wan off balance.

Wen Ran blinked, finishing her last bit of bun, stepped forward, and pulled Xiao Yun, "Calm down!"

Xiao Yun: "?"

She looked bewildered, "Who are you?"

Wen Ran smiled slyly, "Don't want to go to the countryside?"

The family exchanged glances, suspicion rising in their eyes.

Though Wen Ran didn't know them, she suspected they were certainly wealthy or powerful and likely stuck at some difficult juncture.

Otherwise, people like them would have ways to avoid going to the countryside, yet they were helpless.

"Who are you?"

Wen Ran spoke gently, "Don't be nervous, I mean no harm—just have a transaction to discuss with you.

My name is Wen Ran, and I'm an accountant at the steel plant."

The steel plant, huh.

The man's wariness didn't wholly fade, only his tone softened a bit, "Hello, young comrade, may I ask if you have some internal info on jobs?"

Wen Ran shook her head; even if there were changes at the steel plant, it wouldn't be her, a mere accountant, to know.

The light in the man's eyes dimmed significantly, so Wen Ran spoke up: "Well, the thing is, I'm planning to give up my job."

The family of three: "?"

Wait a minute!

They exchanged a glance, disbelief coloring their eyes, "Why?"

A sarcastic smile hung on Wen Ran's lips, "No matter how much you guard, it's tough against family thieves; tricked by my family, if they want my job, they can only send me to the countryside."

Concerning his beloved daughter, the man would naturally be serious. Looking at Wen Ran's face, he solemnly extended his hand, "Hello, I'm Chen Hengsheng, and this is my wife Xiao Yun, and our daughter Chen Wan."

"Hello, Wen Ran."

"Let's find somewhere else to talk."

"Alright!"

True to being a man of action, after relocation, within an hour, Chen Hengsheng had investigated Wen Ran's family's drama thoroughly.

No other problems.

"What's the asking price for this job, Comrade Xiao Wen?"

"Accountant at the steel plant, limitless future, right?" Wen Ran—the seller—held the advantage, smiling brightly, "What price do you think is suitable?"

Chen Hengsheng pondered briefly, "I'll offer one thousand and swap your countryside position as well, on the condition that the job is secured today."

"Alright," no point in prolonging dreams, she understood.

She also wanted things settled soon and get back to confrontations.

After all, despite crossing into this life, she hadn't confronted the Wen family head-on yet.

Her hands itched.

Being a straightforward person, when Wen Ran handed the job over to Chen Wan, Chen Hengsheng offered not only a thousand-yuan after savings, but also some rare coupons.

Wen Ran raised her brow, accepting Chen Hengsheng's kindness frankly. After all, it made no difference whom she sold the job to, but for Chen Hengsheng, it was a lifesaver.

"Thank you."

Seeing Wen Ran's relaxed expression, Chen Hengsheng couldn't help but be somewhat moved—it seemed that the child's early-deceased mother was quite remarkable, raising the child immensely well from early on.

Even after years of living like livestock, she hadn't cowered.

"Yes," relieved of a great burden, Chen Hengsheng glanced at his joyful wife and daughter, feeling deeply moved.

Moreover, he handed Wen Ran a note, whispering, "Comrade Xiao Wen, I will never forget your immense kindness. Here is my address.

If you encounter any difficulties in the countryside, you can write back. Wherever I can assist, Mr. Chen will not shirk his duty."

A promise from a big figure.

Honestly, somewhat futile; small tasks don't warrant it, large tasks can't be solved.

But why would Wen Ran provoke him? She took the note, thanked him, then suddenly spoke, "You know, sometimes, hesitation leads to complication.

When you're merciful to others, they take action without leaving any face."

With that said, Wen Ran left behind the still-stunned Chen Hengsheng, walking away briskly.

There were still things to attend to—her time was indeed valuable.

Leaving the alley, Wen Ran headed straight to the office for young intellectuals, scouting around, suddenly asking, "Now with countryside assignments, what locations are there?"

As the original owner's strongest enemy, she ought to select an appropriate place for Li Minmin.

For instance, afforestation in the Northwest—giving blood and sweat, selflessly contributing, elevating the principle.

Of course, one could rephrase it.

Eating sand.

For example, managing the grasslands, living in sheep pens daily, or going to the southern islands to chew kelp daily.

The theme being, wherever it's toughest, that's where you go.

"What's this about?" The young girl in the office looked skeptical, "In our location, anyone signing up gets randomly assigned; how can there be picking and choosing?"

"That's indeed the case," Wen Ran earnestly handed over Li Minmin's household register, "but I believe if we're contributing to national construction, surely choosing the harshest place can demonstrate my great and unparalleled spirit."

Meanwhile, Wen Ran's gaze caught her own name, lately inscribed.

The countryside location was Qingshan Commune, Silly Deer Team of the Three Northeastern Provinces.

Wen Ran: "..."

What a ridiculous place name.

But the Three Northeastern Provinces are wonderful.

Geographical conditions are favorable, land fertile, mountain ranges stretch endlessly—surely letting her eat and drink merrily!

Wen Ran quickly retracted her gaze; the young girl opposite almost grinned herself silly, unable to suppress her smile.

"Please sit. Currently, we still need some people in the Beijiang area.

Food and drink are assured, and reportedly even better than average; goat milk and lamb are accessible."

The ability to eat meat and drink milk, yet few willing to go—proof of certainly hidden pitfalls.
