Another day at the Selaris Estate. No one was home except for Rue, who was sitting on the floor, unironically. Ray walked by and jumped in shock; Rue's hair completely covered her face, and she was in such a deep sleep that she looked like a curled-up ball on the hardwood. Her white wolf tail was tucked tightly against her stomach, and her wolf ears were hidden beneath the mess of her dark blue hair.

Ray picked her up, which finally jolted her awake. A flicker of his demon mana pulsed as he lifted her. Groggily, Rue mumbled, "Bro, you could just left me there; I was comfortable. Why are you here, anyway? Aren't you supposed to be on a business trip?"

Ray's demon tail flicked in irritation. "Comfortable? Rue, you were literally curled up like a draft stopper in the middle of the hallway," he countered, his voice still vibrating with annoyance from nearly tripping over her. "And for the record, the trip ended early. I wasn't about to spend another night in a hotel bed that smelled like industrial lavender when my own house, that apparently has a resident floor goblin."

Rue kicked and squirmed, her wolf tail lashing out, forcing Ray to put her down. She immediately dropped back to the floor, her wolf ears drooping in drowsiness as sleep took over her. "Why are you so annoying? You're a literal adult now; you should be more responsible, Mr. Heir of Selaris."

Ray snickered, clearly annoyed by her snide remark. He stared at her strangely for a moment before grinding out, "Like you would know, killer."

She stood up quickly and walked away, hiding her hurt expression. Ray called out after her, "You should be used to that by now, Rue! It's been five years!"

She shot back a glare, her wolf ears pinning back as she slammed her bedroom door. Outside, Ray stared at the wood for a long moment, his demon tail hanging still, thinking hard before finally walking away. Inside, Rue slumped against the door, her body sliding down until she hit the floor as if she'd lost all her bones, grabbing her wolf tail as it shook with her trembling hands. The weight of the "killer" comment hung in the air, but she was too exhausted to do anything more than lean her head back and close her eyes.

A few days later, a rumor began to spread: Rue was the girl, the last White Wolf.

Asher called Rue into his office, a dead serious look on his face. Rue plopped into a chair, staring vacantly at the ceiling as if trying to disappear into the plaster. Her wolf tail was wrapped tightly around her ankle in a nervous grip. Asher coughed, clearly in distress or perhaps just struggling to find the right words.

"So," he began, his voice heavy. "You might have heard the rumors, Rue."

She looked at him with pure boredom. "So what? What is it you want, 'sir'?"

Asher's composure snapped. His demon tail stood up rigid, and a wave of his oppressive demon mana filled the room. His tone turned harsh and imperious. "Rue! Have some manners! And cut that damn hair; it's getting too long. What if they figure out you're a girl?"

Rue smirked, a look of feigned shock crossing her face. "Oh my... it seems someone has a temper," she drawled. She propped her chin on her hand, looking as sly and nonchalant as ever. "So, sir... what shall we do?"

Asher sighed, straightening his shirt. "I'm sending you to an orphanage for a while. Then, after a month or so, I will adopt you as my daughter."

Rue's composure vanished instantly, replaced by pure rage. A spark of icy blue White Wolf mana crackled at her fingertips. "I'm not going!"

Asher gritted his teeth, his controlling tone barely in check. "You will go. That is final."

Rue stood up, glaring daggers at him, her wolf ears standing tall in defiance. "I'm not some piece of furniture that you can move whenever you're bored, 'Father.' Remember? I'm your flesh and blood."

She left without another word, leaving him no room to reply. As she walked toward her room, she spotted her brother, Ren. He smiled as he walked over, ruffling her hair as if she were a dog. "Haven't seen each other in a while, Rue."

They both sat down, an awkward tension stretching between them. Ren's demon tail swished softly with a rhythmic thud. Rue spoke first. "So, where have you been?"

Ren seemed to zone out for a moment, his brain malfunctioning before he replied, "Oh, uhm... fine? Life at Starlight Boarding has been... nice."

At that moment, an idea struck her. She quickly shot up. "I have things to do, bye!" She waved, bolting to her room and leaving Ren in a confused state. She started packing her bag—snacks, clothes, anything she could find.

Late at night, she sneaked out of her room, tiptoeing through the dark halls. Suddenly, she bumped into someone, muffling a yelp. "Dude, what the hell?" she whispered.

She looked up, meeting a pair of glowing green eyes. Her wolf ears stood straight up in fear. She can't be caught like this, she thought. A faint glow of demon mana emanated from the stranger's hand, and suddenly, a stash of money was teleported directly into her palm. Before she could speak, the figure was gone. She shook her head, snapping out of her shock, as she had to run before anyone found her.

She ran all the way from the estate to the station, her legs nearly giving out, her wolf tail streaming behind her in the wind. In the faint, silver light of the moon, she saw a train approaching in the distance.
