Since they were heading to Kalos to find Mewtwo and figure out a way to safely handle Eternatus, he needed partners who could actually hold their ground. Gengar could definitely work. And of course, Charizard was a must.
Right now, the only Pokémon on Ash's active roster capable of matching Charizard was his hyper-powered Pikachu; the power gap between Charizard and the rest of his team was simply massive.

The next morning, bags packed, the duo caught an early flight straight to Kalos. Their immediate destination was a secluded island just off the coast of Lumiose City.
Using his Aura, Ash had managed a brief telepathic exchange with Mewtwo, pinpointing the precise location where the Legendary Pokémon was currently living in isolation.
As soon as the plane touched down, they rushed toward the island without a single moment's delay.

Ash replied without looking back, "I'm here to find someone who can help me keep Eternatus in check. Ever since I caught it, it hasn't responded to a single one of my attempts to communicate via Aura.
Talk about a stubborn guy! So I figured the only way to get through to it is to let it out and talk face-to-face. But Eternatus possesses a terrifying amount of raw power. Even in its current weakened state, it's not something an ordinary Pokémon can handle.
If I release it carelessly and it loses control, it could completely devastate the surrounding environment. That's why I need an ally strong enough to completely suppress it if things go south."
Chloe nodded understandingly. "Ah, I see. An ally to suppress Ener—wait, WHAT?! Suppress ETERNATUS?!"
"Vee??" Eevee, who was nestled snugly in her arms, jumped in fright at her sudden exclamation.
"Oh, sorry, Eevee! I didn't mean to startle you..." After taking a moment to calm the little Pokémon down, Chloe turned back to Ash in sheer disbelief.
"What kind of Pokémon could possibly suppress Eternatus? Isn't that the literal monster that required you, Goh, Leon, Cynthia, Zacian, and Zamazenta all working together just to stop it?!"
Ash scratched his head, offering a sheepish grin. "Well, strictly speaking, in its current weakened state, Charizard and Pikachu could probably overpower it. But there's no telling how much collateral damage they'd cause in the process.
Remember, a single stray blast from it nearly leveled the entire Hammerlocke Stadium! The helper we're looking for is a supreme master of Psychic-type power. With him around, Eternatus won't be able to stir up any trouble at all."

The closer they got, the more intensely Ash could feel the connection. He didn't even need to search for Mewtwo's exact coordinates; across the entire island, Mewtwo's Aura signature was radiating like a giant spotlight in the dead of night, dazzling and impossible to miss.
Before Ash could even take a step forward, Mewtwo detected their presence. In a flash of blue light, it teleported directly in front of them, startling Chloe and Eevee so badly they nearly leaped out of their skins.
"Wh-Who... who are you??"
"This is the helper I was talking about! Mewtwo, it's been a long time!"

"It spoke?!!" Chloe's eyes widened to the size of saucers. Not only was this a Pokémon she had absolutely never seen or read about before, but it was actively communicating using telepathy!
Was this... another Legendary Pokémon? But she had never once heard the name 'Mewtwo' in any research database!
"Hehe, I know you probably have a ton of questions about Mewtwo, Chloe, but don't worry—we'll have plenty of time to talk later! Right now, let's get down to business."

Mewtwo already understood the exact reason for Ash's visit. With a swift flick of its wrist, it teleported the entire group to a massive, wide-open clearing on the island, its piercing eyes signaling that Ash could now safely release Eternatus.
Even though Mewtwo's temperament had grown significantly calmer and far less aggressive over the years, the prospect of facing the legendary entity that had nearly brought the entire Galar region to its knees still sparked a flicker of ancient, competitive curiosity within him.

With that, Ash pulled out a heavy, black-and-gold Ultra Ball. After returning to Professor Magnolia's lab, they transferred Eternatus into this high-grade capsule to ensure maximum stability, preventing its residual energy from accidentally fracturing a standard Poké Ball.
