Chapter 39 - Season 3 - Episode 12

Yui's eyes fluttered open, the world tilting around her. Cold stone pressed against her back, rough and unforgiving. She tried to sit up, only to realize her wrists and ankles were bound with thick, coarse ropes. Panic clawed at her chest.

"Haru…?" she croaked. Her throat was dry, her voice barely more than a whisper.

Beside her, Haru groaned, blinking slowly. The dim light of the room revealed high ceilings and towering walls, dark with age and shadow. They weren't in the hallway anymore — they weren't anywhere they recognized.

The space around them stretched endlessly, yet it had structure: stone floors polished like obsidian, vaulted ceilings arching overhead, and thick tapestries that swallowed light, giving the place an ancient, solemn presence. They were inside a castle, deep in Limbo, a place so disconnected from the rest of existence that it felt untouched by time or magic.

Haru strained against his bindings. "Yui… we've been… captured?"

Before Yui could answer, footsteps echoed from the far end of the hall. The sound was slow, deliberate, perfectly synchronized, each step carrying authority.

Ten figures emerged from the shadows, walking with an ease that suggested absolute control over the space. Five men and five women, their presence commanding enough to make the air itself seem heavier.

The man at the center stepped forward first. He was tall, broad-shouldered, with dark hair combed neatly and sharp gray eyes that scanned them like a predator assessing prey.

His black coat hung perfectly over his shoulders, though there was an ease to his posture that made him seem in complete control of both the room and its occupants.

Around him, the others formed a semi-circle. One man's amber eyes glimmered behind wire-rimmed glasses, a faint smirk tugging at his lips; another had curly dark hair and an easy, fluid stance that hinted at lethal precision.

A third, lean and tall, had tattoos barely visible beneath his rolled-up sleeves, his expression unreadable. The fourth and fifth men brought balance — one calm and silver-haired, the other dark-eyed and quiet, exuding a quiet menace.

The women were no less formidable. A red-haired woman's golden eyes flared as she stepped forward, her ponytail swinging lightly.

A lavender-haired woman's delicate frame belied her piercing violet gaze, scanning every twitch of Yui and Haru. A broad-shouldered woman with dark skin and tightly braided hair stood motionless, radiating authority. Beside her, a pale woman with icy blue hair and teal eyes surveyed them with unflinching calm.

Finally, a slight woman with short black hair and heterochromatic eyes — one green, one brown — tilted her head, assessing them in silence.

The leader's voice cut through the heavy silence, low and resonant. "Welcome… Yui Nakamura, Haru Tanaka. You are now within the deepest reaches of Limbo, in a place outside the threads of any universe you have known. And now, you are in our custody."

He stepped closer, gray eyes sharp and unyielding.

"I am the head of the Counselors. The others you see here maintain balance, ensuring that timelines remain intact.

You… have meddled with forces far beyond your understanding. The Jester's clock, your interference in multiple universes — it has fractured more than one reality."

Yui's chest tightened. "W-we didn't mean to—"

"Intentions are meaningless here," the leader interrupted, his gaze unwavering.

"You have crossed into realms mortals were never meant to reach. And now… you will answer for it."

Haru's jaw tightened, straining against the ropes. "So… what happens now?"

The leader's lips curved faintly, almost imperceptibly.

"Now… you will learn the limits of your power. And the consequences of defying the natural order."

The ten Counselors stood silently, their presence pressing down on them from all sides. Yui's heart pounded.

Haru's eyes darted from one figure to another, measuring strength against strength. Neither of them had ever felt so small, so exposed. The castle around them — ancient, cold, and impossibly vast — seemed to emphasize their helplessness.

Every instinct screamed at them: they were trapped, outmatched, and far deeper in Limbo than they had ever imagined.

One of the Counselors, a tall woman with icy blue hair and piercing teal eyes, let out a soft sigh, glancing at the others.

"They're just children," she murmured, her voice carrying more sympathy than the rest of the group had shown so far.

The leader, standing at the center of the semi-circle, didn't flinch.

"Children or not, there is no point in running. You won't get anywhere. You're in the deepest layer of Limbo. The farther you try to go, the more you will fail."

Haru exchanged a glance with Yui, his jaw tightening. He swallowed hard, and after a pause, he said quietly, "She's right. We… we won't do anything."

Yui's grip on her sleeves loosened, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly. "Yeah… we won't."

The Counselors watched them for a long moment, then a soft click of movement broke the silence. The red-haired woman with molten-gold eyes stepped forward and knelt beside them. Her hands moved carefully, untying the ropes binding Yui and Haru.

"There," she said gently, brushing Yui's hair back and giving her a soft pat on the head. Her touch was motherly, calm, grounding. Yui blinked, a lump forming in her throat, feeling both relief and lingering fear.

Another Counselor, the young man with jet-black hair and deep brown eyes, stepped forward. His expression was serious but not harsh.

"You have the Jester's clock. That's why you've caused so much… disruption. But now, we need you somewhere safe to rest."

Haru and Yui nodded wordlessly, still wary, still unsure of what would happen next.

The group led them through the castle's dimly lit hallways, the echoes of their footsteps swallowed by the vast stone corridors, until they arrived at a grand dining room. Long tables stretched the length of the room, lit faintly by tall, flickering candles that cast warm, trembling light across the walls.

Though the stone and shadows remained, the atmosphere was quieter, almost comforting.

Sayaka sat a few seats away from where Yui and Haru were placed. Her scythe leaned against the table beside her, the red gleam of her hair catching the candlelight.

The Jester's clock rested on the table between them, its dull, green-tinged glow pulsating faintly. She didn't look at them, didn't speak, but the weight of her presence pressed heavily into the room.

Yui's hands twitched, itching to reach for the clock, but she stayed rooted, glancing at Haru. He gave her a small, tense nod — they were trapped, but together, at least for now.

The Counselors moved around them in quiet efficiency, some clearing plates, others adjusting candles or reviewing documents.

The castle's dining room felt enormous, empty but alive with subtle energy, a deep Limbo heartbeat that neither of them could ignore.

And there, in that strange, suspended quiet, Yui and Haru finally allowed themselves to sit and breathe, though uneasily. The clock sat between them, a constant reminder of why they were here — and why the Counselors were watching their every move.

Haru's hands clenched slightly under the table. His eyes flicked to the clock, then back to the Counselors, the words cutting deeper than he expected. Yui noticed the tension in his shoulders and placed a gentle hand over his, trying to anchor him.

"Haru…" she whispered, low enough that only he could hear, "don't let them get to you. We need a plan."

He swallowed, jaw tightening, but his gaze remained on the clock. His heart beat faster with every measured word the Counselors exchanged. "I… I can't just sit here," he murmured back. "We can't let them do this."

Haru shifted again in his seat, tapping his fingers lightly against the table.

The Counselors' calm presence was suffocating, each of their silent glances like a weight pressing down on him. Yui noticed, her hand tightening slightly over his. "Haru… please," she murmured, voice low. "Try to stay calm."

He shook his head subtly, barely audible, almost to himself: "I can't. I just… I can't sit here and do nothing." His eyes flicked toward the Jester's clock, the golden glow calling to him, whispering promises of action, of reclaiming control.

Sayaka's gaze lingered on him, a faint smirk tugging at the corner of her lips. She leaned slightly forward, resting her chin on her hands, watching, waiting. Haru felt it — her watchful presence, calm but precise, like she was measuring every heartbeat, every twitch of his nerves.

The tall male Counselor broke the silence. "Restless," he said flatly, almost like a statement, not a question. "You do not understand the forces you meddle with."

Haru's hands trembled slightly, but he forced his voice steady, though low.

"I… I can't just let you decide. Not like this. We—"

He paused, swallowing hard as the words caught in his throat.

He was careful — measured — but even that small defiance made the Counselors' calmness ripple.

Another Counselor, a girl with long, dark green hair and eyes like polished jade, folded her hands neatly in her lap.

"Actions have consequences," she said softly. "Even children must learn this."

Her tone was not cruel, but it was impossible to ignore.

Haru's chest rose and fell faster. He clenched his fists on the table.

"I know. But we have to try. We have to do something!"

The Counselors shared another glance. Sayaka's gaze narrowed slightly, then flicked to the clock again, her lips curving into a thin, controlled smile.

The leader, a man with silver hair and piercing blue eyes, leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable. "You will not act as you please here," he said calmly. "This room is not for debate. If you cannot respect our boundaries…"

Before he could finish, the air shifted. The floor beneath Haru and Yui trembled faintly, and a subtle hum ran along the edges of the table. Haru's restlessness reached its peak — he couldn't stay seated another moment. He rose slightly, the chair scraping against the stone floor, heart hammering.

The Counselors' eyes all turned toward him. The leader's hand lifted slightly, and with a subtle gesture, the room responded. A faint wind seemed to lift them off the floor, and the walls shifted imperceptibly.

"You will learn," the leader said softly, almost kindly, but with iron beneath the words. "The chamber awaits those who cannot restrain themselves."

Almost instantly, two of the female Counselors stood, their movements fluid and precise. In a single motion, they reached for Haru and Yui. Haru tried to resist, but the grip on his arms was unyielding, firm but not cruel. Yui's hands flailed, clutching at him and the nearest chairs, but another Counselor appeared at her side, calm and unshakable, and her arms wrapped around Yui with impossible strength.

"Please," Yui whispered, struggling against the hold. "We're not doing anything wrong—just listen—"

But the Counselors were already moving. Haru and Yui were lifted, one on each side, and guided toward the rear of the hall. Their legs kicked and struggled, but the grip was inescapable. The dining room's candles flickered in the wind of their movement, shadows stretching unnaturally along the walls.

"You are testing patience," the leader's voice echoed, calm and unbroken. "This chamber will teach restraint."

Haru's eyes scanned the chamber again, taking in the runes etched into the floor and walls, the faint hum of magic resonating through the air. The cage loomed over them, the bars pulsing softly, as if alive. No matter how much he shook or pressed at the metal, it didn't budge. Each attempt made the runes flare brighter, warning them silently of the danger.

Yui pressed her palms against the bars, her brow furrowed. "It's no use," she murmured, her voice trembling. "We… we can't just brute-force this. We're stuck here."

Haru sank to his knees, running a hand through his hair. "Stuck…" he echoed, jaw tight. His chest felt heavy, panic clawing at him. "We've tried everything. What if… what if there's no way out?"

Yui shook her head, trying to steady her own fear. "There has to be. There always is. We just… have to think." She glanced around the room, eyes landing on faint glimmers near the ceiling and edges of the walls.

"Maybe it's something we can reach… something the cage isn't expecting us to notice."

Haru's gaze followed hers, catching a flicker of light near a high shelf, something metallic tucked just out of reach. His pulse quickened. "Wait… there. That might be it."

Haru's eyes caught a faint glimmer along the far wall of the chamber, a small metallic edge tucked into the shadows near the ceiling. His chest tightened — it was far out of reach, but something about it seemed important. Without thinking, he grabbed his mini weapon, adjusting it carefully to hook whatever it was.

"Yui… I think I can get it," he whispered, voice low. His fingers trembled slightly, heart hammering in his chest.

Yui nodded, eyes wide but steady. "Be careful… whatever it is, we need it."

Haru extended the weapon, testing the angle. The glimmer wavered as he nudged it gently. A faint clink echoed through the chamber — the key was loose.

He carefully maneuvered it, catching it on the end of the hook. "Got it," he breathed, his hand shaking as he retrieved it.

Yui helped him steady the cage's magical lock. The moment the key clicked into place, the bars shivered, and a low hum pulsed through the chamber. Slowly, the cage swung open. Haru and Yui stepped out, breathing heavily, their eyes scanning for movement.

From the shadows, a presence shifted. The dark-skinned woman with the braid appeared first, her eyes sharp and calculating. "Going somewhere?" she asked, voice calm but dangerous. Haru stiffened.

"Move!" Yui hissed, gripping his arm as they darted toward the narrow corridor.

But the Counselors were fast. The pale woman with purple hair emerged behind the first, her hands glowing faintly with magic. A sudden pulse forced Haru to jump back, mini weapon ready. "We can't just fight them!" he muttered, glancing at Yui.

They had no choice. Haru's mini weapon deflected a magical strike from the purple-haired woman while Yui lunged, swinging her knight weapon to break the trajectory of another attack. The clash was tense, every second counting.

Haru ducked as the braid-woman struck, countering with a swift jab from his weapon. Yui pressed forward, blocking another magical lunge with the edge of her blade.

"We can't hold them off forever!" Haru gasped, ducking under a sweeping arc of energy. "This way — hurry!" He grabbed Yui's hand and pulled her toward a narrow stairwell leading downward.

The Counselors pursued, but the twisting corridors worked in Haru and Yui's favor. They darted past impossible angles and low arches, the castle itself seeming to shift subtly as they ran, guiding them toward something unseen. Finally, the hum of magic changed, stronger and more resonant.

Ahead, bathed in faint emerald light, stood the Jester's clock. It pulsed like a heartbeat, waiting. Haru and Yui skidded to a stop, catching their breath, the weight of everything crashing over them — the fight, the chase, the near-constant fear.

Together, they grasped the clock, feeling the weight of time itself in their hands. The world twisted around them, the air snapping and bending as reality fractured. The hum of magic from the castle faded into distant echoes, the Counselors' presence shrinking behind them.

And then — darkness, a pull, and the familiar yet disorienting sensation of time folding. When they opened their eyes, the world was different. The air smelled older, the light softer, and the distant echoes of lives yet to be lived tugged at their senses.

They weren't in the same universe they had left. And as they glanced at each other, hearts still racing, they realized with a sinking thrill that they had done something far bigger than escaping — they had altered the flow of time itself.
