Chapter 247 - The Valley of Clashing Titans

The Valley of Clashing Titans

The familiar, disorienting tug of spatial transit lasted only moments. When Yao Xuan's senses cleared, he stood amidst a primeval forest. Towering trees, their trunks thick as small buildings, reached for a sky dappled with green-gold light. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth, blooming fungi, and latent power.

"Formation!" Yao Xuan's command was soft but immediate.

The five moved as one unit, falling into a defensive circle—backs to each other, eyes scanning the dense, shadowed undergrowth. Tang Wulin's Blue Silver Grass extended, weaving a subtle, living network between them, a tactile communication line. Gu Yue's hands moved in a gentle, complex pattern. A moment later, a small, crystalline bird formed of condensed wind element shot from her fingertips, darting silently into the canopy to scout.

After a tense minute, the wind bird returned, dissolving into a breeze that carried no warning. The immediate vicinity was clear.

"Higher ground," Yao Xuan decided.

They moved cautiously to a nearby rocky incline. The view from the hilltop revealed an endless sea of green, rolling to distant, hazy mountains. Yet, there was no sign of movement, no roar, no flutter of wings. The forest was preternaturally still.

Half an hour of vigilant waiting stretched their nerves.

"Captain," Xie Xie whispered, his voice tight. "The trial is survival, right? So where's the threat? This is just… waiting."

"The greatest threats often announce themselves last," Yao Xuan replied, his gaze never leaving the tree line. "Stay sharp. Shrek does nothing without purpose."

They established a makeshift camp in the sturdy branches of a massive oak, and Gu Yue wove a subtle barrier of interwoven earth and air elements around it, dampening their presence.

Dusk painted the forest in deep blues and purples. As they prepared a simple meal, the silence shattered.

A roar erupted from the deep woods. It was not just sound; it was a physical pressure, a wave of primal dominance that shook the very leaves. Xie Xie and Xu Xiaoyan flinched, their faces draining of color. Tang Wulin stiffened, a golden glint flashing in his eyes. Yao Xuan and Gu Yue, however, only grew more focused. They felt the pressure—a deep, savage might—but their own legacies stirred in response, not in fear, but in recognition.

"Alert!" Yao Xuan's voice cut through the lingering dread.

They regrouped, weapons and spirits at the ready. Xu Xiaoyan trembled, gripping her staff. "What… what was that?"

"Our assessment making itself known," Yao Xuan said, his eyes narrowed toward the roar's source. "We can wait for it to find us, or we can learn what 'it' is."

"We go," Gu Yue stated, her voice cool. The analytical part of her needed data; the part connected to Na'er's memories trusted Yao Xuan's lead implicitly.

Tang Wulin nodded, his jaw set. "Brother Xuan's right. Passive survival isn't our style. We take the initiative."

Before the others could voice their frayed nerves, a second roar answered the first. This one was different—sharper, clearer, carrying a strange, purifying quality that cut through the oppressive aura left by the first, leaving a sense of alert calm in its wake.

"Decision's made," Yao Xuan said softly, noting how the second roar bolstered Xie Xie and Xu Xiaoyan's resolve. "Move quietly. Eyes open."

They became ghosts in the twilight forest. Ten minutes later, Gu Yue halted them with a raised hand. "Left front. A valley. My wind scout was dispersed by chaotic air currents."

Yao Xuan nodded. He concentrated, and a wisp of pale, nine-colored energy—the Ancestral Dragon Chaos Qi—bloomed around them, forming a faint, shimmering dome. The oppressive wildness of the forest's aura receded, replaced by a serene, ancient stability. Inside the dome, they breathed easier.

"I'll scout the entrance," Yao Xuan said. "Hold here."

He moved ahead, every sense extended. Reaching the valley's rocky mouth, he peered inside.

The scene within was apocalyptic. Two spheres of devastating light—one dark gold, one blazing gold—clashed in the valley's heart. Each collision was a localized earthquake, sending shockwaves that pulverized stone and uprooted ancient trees. The dark gold light radiated pure, destructive fury. The golden light burned with regal, incinerating authority.

'So it is them,' Yao Xuan thought, a thrill of grim understanding running through him. This was the highest difficulty—a trial by fire set amidst the battle of titans.

He retreated to the group. "Two soul beasts," he reported, his voice low. "A Dark Gold Terrorclaw Bear and a Three-Eyed Golden Lion. Their power is… monumental. At the level of peak ten-thousand-year beasts." He met their eyes. "Do we observe, or do we withdraw?"

Tang Wulin's gaze was drawn toward the valley, a strange pull in his blood. "We're here to survive. Knowing the greatest dangers is part of that. We look."

Gu Yue gave a slight nod of agreement. Xie Xie, though pale, clenched his daggers tighter. Xu Xiaoyan took a deep breath. "If… if we can learn something…"

Suddenly, the violent tremors from the valley ceased. The roaring stopped, replaced by the sound of crashing foliage growing rapidly distant. The two colossal auras were moving away, locked in their deadly chase.

Xie Xie let out a shaky breath he didn't know he was holding. "A territorial fight? They're gone… For now." A greedy spark lit in his eyes. "The Three-Eyed Golden Lion… legends say its lair is a treasure trove. And the teacher said anything we find is ours…"

The logic was sound, the temptation real. Yao Xuan looked at Gu Yue. Her violet eyes held a calculating light, but also a silent trust in his judgment. He glanced at Tang Wulin, who gave a firm nod.

"Wulin," Yao Xuan said. "Anchor us down."

"On it." Thick, sturdy vines of Blue Silver Grass shot from Tang Wulin's hands, anchoring to sturdy rocks. He began the careful descent into the now-quiet, but ominously scarred, valley. Yao Xuan went next, followed by Gu Yue, then Xie Xie and Xu Xiaoyan. They descended into the chasm where titans had clashed, the air still crackling with residual energy and the promise of perilous discovery. The true test of their survival, and their unity, had truly begun.
