Chapter 36 - The Gentle Horizon

The attic was still humming with the faint resonance of threads when the door creaked open. Orie rushed in first, her shawl trailing behind her, and without hesitation she threw her arms around Ivy and Tieran. Her embrace was fierce, almost desperate, as if she needed to feel their warmth to believe they were truly back.

"We were worried sick," Orie said, pulling back just enough to look into Ivy's face. Her voice cracked, the sharpness of her words betraying the depth of her fear. "You vanished into that realm of illusion and memory, and every moment you were gone felt endless."

Nia followed close behind, tears already spilling as she pressed herself against Ivy, clutching her tightly. "I'm so glad you're back," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I don't care what happened in there, as long as you're here now, safe."

Ivy leaned into them both, her chest rising with a steady breath. Her voice was soft, but it carried a new strength. "We're back. And the fracture is gone. I feel whole again."

Tieran's hand brushed hers, the bond pulsing quietly between them. He added, his tone calm and certain, "We made it through. Together."

The floor creaked, and Thimble stepped into the room. His small frame seemed weighed down by worry, his eyes searching Ivy's face with quiet intensity. "Is Ivy truly okay now?" he asked, his voice low but earnest.

Ivy turned to him, her smile faint but real, her eyes glowing with the light of restoration. "Yes. I'm okay. More than okay."

From the stairwell, Illan appeared, his expression softening as he saw her standing strong. He gave a gentle nod, already moving toward the kitchen. "Let me make you herbal soup," he said, his voice warm and practical. "You need comfort and warmth after what you've endured."

The attic filled with voices, with the rustle of movement, with the comfort of familiar presence. Orie fussed over Ivy's hair, smoothing it back as if she could erase the storm's touch. Nia refused to let go of her hand, her tears falling freely but her smile radiant. Thimble lingered close, his quiet loyalty a steady anchor. Illan's footsteps faded into the kitchen, the promise of healing carried in the scent of herbs soon to come.

For the first time since the realm's illusions, Ivy felt the weight lift from her chest. The bond with Tieran pulsed quietly, steady and unbroken, but now it was surrounded by the warmth of family and friends. The storm had demanded sacrifice, the land had tested their unity, the soul fragment had dissolved her fracture. And now, in this gentle horizon, Ivy could finally breathe.

The attic scene swelled into something almost playful after the storm of Eryndor.

Ivy's stomach growled loudly, breaking the hush. Tieran glanced at her, already moving toward the kitchen. "What are you going to cook?" Ivy asked, narrowing her eyes. "Don't tell me it's warm sadness again."

Tieran didn't reply—his silence deliberate—and disappeared into the kitchen with a faint smirk.

Aldi tugged at Thimble's sleeve. "Come on, let's find some wild carrots in the forest."

Thimble frowned, shaking his head. "No, it's too much trouble—"

But when the word carrot reached his ears, his eyes lit up. He hesitated, then nodded quickly. "…Alright. Carrots."

Illian returned from the kitchen, carrying a steaming bowl. "Herbal soup," he announced gently. "It will help you recover."

Ivy took the bowl, sniffed it, and wrinkled her nose. "This smells like disaster," she muttered, naming it the soup of disaster.

She braved a sip, then immediately jumped to her feet, coughing and sputtering. "Oh no—this is terrible!"

Orie and Nia rushed to her side, both insisting. "You have to drink it, Ivy. It's good for you!"

They held her shoulders firmly, urging her to finish. Ivy groaned, glaring toward the kitchen. "Tieran, you better make me some super sweet dessert after this!"

The Ancestor and Threadkeeper, who had been watching quietly, exchanged a smile. Their voices were calm, almost ceremonial. "Let us manifest into books again. Call us when you need us."

The Ancestor stepped gracefully into Jashper's book, vanishing into its pages. The Threadkeeper shimmered, folding back into his own tome. Nia carefully placed the two volumes side by side, her hands reverent, as if cradling living hearts.

Illian set the steaming soup down just as Tieran returned with his tray of dessert, the air filling with the fragrance of herbs and sugar. At that exact moment, the attic door swung open — Aldi and Thimble stumbled in, their basket brimming with wild carrots and radishes.

"Perfect timing," Aldi grinned, setting the basket down.

Thimble didn't wait. He plucked a carrot and began munching noisily, crumbs scattering across the floor. Ivy laughed, shaking her head. "You eat faster than Tieran cooks!"

The attic filled with chatter and warmth. Orie fussed about mixing carrots with dessert, Nia teased Ivy to eat more, and Illian tried to insist his soup wasn't that bad. For a moment, it felt like a festival — laughter, food, and family gathered together.

But amid the noise, Orie's eyes narrowed. She leaned closer to Ivy, noticing threads shimmering faintly around her hands. The glow was subtle, but undeniable. "Ivy… your Threadsbound energy has risen," she said softly, her tone shifting from playful to serious.

Ivy blinked, startled. "Really? I didn't even notice."

Orie guided her gently, teaching a simple cast meant to awaken Mystic Mellow. Ivy followed, threads wrapping around her fingers, weaving into faint shapes. A lantern flickered, a river brightened — but the weave hesitated, refusing to fully open.

Ivy slumped back where she sat, frustration clouding her smile. "It didn't work. Not really."

Nia leaned close, her voice tender but firm. "Don't be disappointed. Even partial awakening means you're touching it. Joy and love take time to grow into power. Don't rush it."

The threads pulsed faintly, as if agreeing. Ivy exhaled, her frustration easing into quiet determination. The attic glowed once more — laughter, food, and the promise of strength yet to come.

The laughter from Thimble's carrot-munching still lingered when Orie leaned closer, her eyes fixed on the faint shimmer around Ivy's hands. "Ivy… your Threadsbound energy is rising again. Try the cast once more."

Ivy nodded, determination flickering in her smile. She closed her eyes, recalling the sweetness of Tieran's dessert, the warmth of Orie's embrace, Nia's tears of relief. Joy and love surged through her chest, stronger this time.

The threads responded instantly. They wrapped around her fingers, weaving into shapes that glowed brighter than before. A lantern of light bloomed, steady and radiant. The air shifted — rivers of calm light unfurled across the attic floor, flowing gently like lullabies.

The walls dissolved into a horizon of soft forests, their leaves whispering comfort. Above, the sky bent to her emotions — constellations rearranging into blossoms when she laughed, clouds drifting low when her chest tightened.

Orie gasped softly, awe in her voice. "You're shaping it… Mystic Mellow is awakening."

Ivy's breath caught, her hands trembling as she guided the threads. A bridge of light arched across the rivers, flowers bloomed midair, and the attic itself seemed to soften into a sanctuary.

But the weave faltered. The rivers dimmed, the blossoms flickered, the bridge wavered. Ivy slumped back, frustration clouding her smile. "It's not complete. I can't hold it."

Nia knelt beside her, her voice gentle but firm. "Don't be disappointed. Even partial awakening means you're touching it. Joy and love take time to grow into power. You've already begun."

The threads pulsed faintly, as if agreeing. Ivy exhaled, her frustration easing into quiet determination. Mystic Mellow shimmered around her — not fully formed, but alive, waiting for her to return.

Tieran pushed open the attic door, the golden fragrance of honey and warm bread filling the air. He carried a tray with the finished pudding, its surface glistening with threads of sugar that caught the lamplight.

Ivy sat up, her eyes narrowing with playful suspicion. "Well? You'd better have made me something super sweet."

Tieran set the tray down with quiet pride. "Honey‑bread pudding," he said simply, handing her the spoon.

Illan stepped forward, smiling. "Let me help," he offered, reaching for the pot Tieran had carried earlier. But as he lifted it, his elbow clipped the edge of the table.

The pot tipped — spun upside down in midair — and landed squarely on Thimble's head. Honey and pudding spilled everywhere, drenching him in sticky sweetness.

Thimble froze, pudding dripping down his hair and cheeks. His eyes widened, then he let out a furious squeak. "Why is it always ME?!" he shouted, flailing his arms as honey slid down his nose.

Aldi collapsed into laughter, clutching his stomach. "You look like a dessert knight!"

Thimble scowled, pudding dripping onto his clothes. "I'll fight anyone who calls me that!" He grabbed a carrot from the basket and brandished it like a sword, chasing Illan around the attic while everyone else burst into laughter.

Ivy giggled so hard she nearly dropped her spoon, Orie scolded Illan with mock severity, and Tieran shook his head, amused. "Next time, Illan, let's keep the pudding on the plate."

Finally, Ivy managed a bite of the pudding that hadn't been sacrificed to Thimble's head. Her eyes widened as sweetness bloomed across her tongue. "This… this is happiness."

Aldi dragged Thimble off, muttering about soap and buckets while Thimble sputtered, "I'll never forgive pudding!" The sound of their bickering faded into another room.

Meanwhile, Tieran set fresh ingredients on the counter, his sleeves rolled up. Ivy followed, arms crossed, her stomach growling louder than before. "I want to eat now, not wait for another disaster," she complained.

Tieran smirked, catching her wrist. "Then help me. You'll get sweetness faster if you stir." He tugged her toward the counter, ignoring her dramatic groan.

Ivy grabbed the spoon reluctantly, muttering, "This is cruel. I'm supposed to be recovering, not cooking."

But as she stirred, threads shimmered faintly around her hands. The spoon glowed, the pot's surface rippling with light. Honey thickened into golden strands that seemed to weave themselves, sugar crystals sparkling like stars.

Tieran paused, eyes widening. "Ivy… you're weaving into the food."

From the doorway, Nia and Orie peeked in, whispering. "Look at them," Nia grinned. "She's fighting him like it's another trial." Orie chuckled softly. "And Mystic Mellow is answering through dessert."

Ivy blinked, startled, as the glow spread. The pudding radiated comfort, its sweetness carrying threads of joy. The pots hummed faintly, flour drifted like starlight, and the air itself felt lighter.

She gasped, realization dawning. "Food… it's a conduit. My Threadsbound power is weaving into it."

Tieran's gaze was steady, his voice low. "Then every meal you make can be more than food. It can be sanctuary."

When Aldi and Thimble returned — Thimble still damp but clean — they stepped into a kitchen that felt transformed. The pudding's glow wrapped around them like a gentle embrace. Thimble sniffed the air, his eyes widening. "…It smells like healing."

The group gathered around the table. The herbal soup no longer tasted of disaster; its bitterness softened into calm. The carrots Aldi had brought seemed brighter, their crunch carrying laughter. Tieran's pudding radiated sweetness that eased the ache in their hearts.

Orie leaned back, her eyes shining. "This isn't just food. It's sanctuary. Ivy, you've given us a hearth of joy."

Nia reached for Ivy's hand, squeezing it gently. "Mystic Mellow is rooting itself here, in the ordinary sweetness of shared meals."

The attic seemed to breathe with them, its walls humming faintly. The storm outside felt distant, muted by the warmth within. Ivy's Threadsbound power had found a new anchor — not in grand rituals or trials, but in the simple act of feeding those she loved.

The attic exhaled. The lanterns flickered softly. The shelves hummed faintly.

The air was warm. The laughter was soft. The bond was alive.
