Chapter 51 - Chapter 51: The Exemplary Teacher Snape (Part 2)

"Dark wizards won't write the words 'I am a Dark wizard' on their faces. Perhaps they might even look somewhat friendly and gentle, like a good person."

"If you suddenly encounter this kind of fellow, what should you do?"

"Wave your fists? Scream? Or draw your wands?"

"And this is what I am going to teach you."

"Teach you what you should do after drawing your wands to prevent the danger you are about to face."

Everyone's attention was deeply captivated by Snape at this moment. His words and his voice sounded blood-curdling, yet the things he described aroused endless curiosity in the young wizards.

Snape could not be compared to Quirrell, who was dead set on playing the fool. He had conducted profound research into the Dark Arts. Although his most outstanding talent lay in Potions, you could not question a Snape who had invented the spell Sectumsempra while still a student at school.

"What I want to warn you is that no matter what year you are in, or whether you have graduated from Hogwarts, when you encounter a threat outside, the best method is not to wrestle or fight with that fellow, but to create an opportunity to flee, or to seek the help of Aurors."

"Although the Ministry of Magic is packed with waste and idiots, at the very least, the Aurors are relatively reliable."

"Especially before you graduate from school and learn Apparition, seeking their help is the most effective action."

"So now, can I assume that every one of you has mastered the first spell Professor Flitwick taught you after you arrived at Hogwarts?"

"Draw your wands."

As soon as Snape's voice fell, the young wizards hurriedly pulled out their wands.

"Lumos. I don't need to teach you a second time, do I?"

The students nodded messily, and the sound of mixed incantations appeared in the classroom.

The tip of everyone's wand lit up. Although the brightness varied, they had all learned how to use it; after all, this was the simplest and most basic magic.

"So now—Nox."

Snape waved his wand, and all the points of light in the classroom extinguished.

"Since you have all only just come into contact with magic, using profound spells is an impossible task for you. However, spells extended from the Wand-Lighting Charm can win you precious time to escape or seek help. It might just be a few seconds, but it is crucial."

As Snape raised his right hand and waved it lightly, black mist emerged in the classroom. The light coming through the windows was swallowed by darkness at that moment, and the classroom, where one couldn't see their own fingers, made people feel uneasy.

"I will demonstrate for you once."

Snape's voice silenced the commotion that had just arisen in the classroom, and nervous tension gained the upper hand once again.

"This is a flashing magic even more powerful than Lumos Maxima."

"Lumos Fulgora."

Like the first ray of light when heaven and earth were split apart, an extremely dazzling ball of light erupted in the darkness. The black mist obscuring people's eyes was shattered and dispelled by this intense light, and the piercing flash left a bright spot on their retinas.

"This is the most basic usage. The piercing light appearing instantly can cause blindness. This duration could be a few seconds, or it could be several minutes, or it could even cause permanent blindness in the opponent—assuming he cannot find a Healer."

"However, if you want to unleash the full power of this magic, don't daydream. Even after you graduate, basically no one will be able to do it."

"Of course, if any of you have very high talent in charms that I have not yet discovered, then you might also be able to do what I do."

Magnificent white light appeared in the pitch-black classroom again, but this time it wasn't a flash explosion that vanished in an instant. Instead, it turned into a beam of light that truly sliced through heaven and earth, and the smell of burnt wood drifted out a moment later.

The black mist vanished, and sunlight from outside the window poured into the classroom once more. Right near the window, thin wisps of smoke were rising continuously from a wooden dummy target. Its front showed traces of being scorched by high heat, and black carbonization covered its chest area.

"Even the most basic Wand-Lighting Charm possesses enough power to put a person to death, provided your mastery of the spell is strong enough and your magical power is sufficient."

The classroom was silent, but the excitement in the young wizards' eyes was almost spilling over. They didn't whisper to each other, simply because Snape possessed enough majesty to make people restrain their emotions. He was the professor at Hogwarts one could least afford to provoke, unless one wanted to experience what it felt like to be better off dead.

"So next, you should master the techniques of how to ask Aurors for help, or immediately distance yourselves from threats."

"Put away your wands and take out your parchment to take notes..."

Snape's class was orderly. Compared to Potions, the Snape teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts was obviously more popular with the young wizards.

This was probably because Snape genuinely liked this subject, and furthermore, Snape wanted to teach a certain person in the classroom some practical skills she would likely need to use. In Snape's eyes, Harley needed to master this knowledge. Even putting aside her identity as the "Girl Who Lived," such a beautiful and cute little girl would easily be targeted by people with ulterior motives outside.

Snape didn't count on Muggles being able to protect her safety; all he could do was let Harley grow up herself.

After all, he had promised Dumbledore not to tail Harley and not to disturb her life. Snape even had some thoughts about making Lynn her bodyguard or something of the sort, but unfortunately, Lynn's talent in charms was indeed very ordinary; in his eyes, it could even be considered second-rate.

Taking a whole day to master a very basic little spell, and a whole week to train that spell to a level where it could barely be brought out for slight use—Snape looked down on this from the bottom of his heart.

When entering the explanation and practical operation steps of the course, Snape resumed his usual severe and harsh side. The young wizards, who hadn't been happy for long, once again experienced Snape's sharp tongue, like that of a vicious stepmother. The mean evaluations popping out of his mouth were tricky and precise, hitting right at the vital points.

"Weasley! Asking you to practice magic is not asking you to impersonate a gorilla waving a stick!"

Ron, who was currently practicing magic very "hard" and had a look of complacency on his face, froze in terror. Today, he had rarely run to the front row to sit; his seat was right behind Harley.

The instant his wand lifted a lock of Harley's hair, Snape's gaze landed on him.

"Get out and stand. You are not allowed to affect other students."

"Five points from Gryffindor."

Pale-faced, Ron stood up trembling. He wanted to explain but didn't dare.

"When I said Weasley, did I not include you?!"

After scolding Ron, Snape swept his gaze around and precisely found Draco Malfoy in the crowd.

"Get out and stand, Malfoy."

"But... Professor, I..."

Draco, who felt he hadn't done anything, was dumbfounded. His detention had only ended a few days ago... what sin had he committed this time?

"Five points from Slytherin."

With a look of death on his face and drooping eyebrows, Draco followed Ron's footsteps to stand in the corridor as punishment.
