The hollow at the center of the banyan tree was, in Charles's mind, probably a kind of safe house.
The banyan's thick trunk and towering canopy shut out danger and prying eyes from the outside world. Here, they could carve out a corner of peace.
And yet, at the same time, the massive tail of the two-headed serpent was still rotting, crawling with ticks. That meant that deep in Charles's mind, he was constantly worrying about his and Eisen's situation.
Beneath the serpent's body—where the entrance to the burrow should have been—there was now a pitch-black void, as if it could repeatedly swallow people whole.
Perhaps, from Charles's perspective, that represented a terrifying unknown and uncertainty.
