The hospital smelled like antiseptic herbs, boiled linen, and exhaustion.
Even outside the sliding entrance doors, the scent clung stubbornly to Hinata's sleeves as she stepped down onto the stone path. The evening air had turned colder while she'd been inside. November cold. The kind that crept quietly through fabric instead of biting all at once.
Lantern light glowed amber along the streets of Konoha, soft halos against deepening blue dusk. Somewhere farther down the road, she could hear the distant clang-clang of a ramen stall shutting its shutters for the night. The village sounded tired.
Beside her, Kō Hyūga moved with the silent, alert posture of a shinobi who never truly relaxed. His dark kimono shifted softly with each step beneath his flak jacket, broad shoulders squared as his pale eyes scanned the street ahead.
Hinata adjusted the strap of her satchel against her shoulder. The inside smelled faintly of sterilized gauze and medicinal paste. Her fingers still carried tiny traces of dried salve beneath the nails no matter how much she scrubbed them.
"You overextended your chakra control again," Kō said without looking at her.
Hinata flinched slightly. "S-sorry."
"It is not criticism." His voice remained calm and even. "Your tenketsu strain was visible from several meters away."
"O-oh…"
"You recovered faster this time."
Hinata blinked.
Then she smiled faintly.
"…Thank you."
Kō gave a small grunt that might have been acknowledgment.
The village road curved around the side of the hospital grounds, lanterns reflecting weakly across damp stone from an earlier drizzle. Hinata tucked her hands into her sleeves against the cold.
Then—
"HINATA-CHAN!"
A familiar voice exploded through the street with all the subtlety of a fireworks factory detonating.
Hinata turned just in time to see Kiba barreling toward her from down the road.
Kō instantly stepped between them.
The motion was so fast Hinata barely processed it. One moment Kō had been beside her. The next, he stood directly ahead, body angled protectively, one hand already near his kunai pouch.
Kiba skidded to a halt.
"Whoa! Hey!"
Akamaru barked from Kiba's arms, squirming weakly.
Kō's pale Byakugan eyes narrowed slightly. "State your intent."
Kiba stared at him. "...My intent?"
Hinata hurried forward, nearly tangling herself in her own sleeves. "I-it's okay, he's my friend."
Kō glanced back at her.
The tension lingered another heartbeat before he exhaled softly through his nose. He bowed his head once toward Kiba and stepped aside.
"My apologies."
Kiba blinked twice.
"…You Hyūga people are weird."
"Kiba-kun!" Hinata whispered, mortified.
"What?!" Kiba barked back.
Then his entire expression snapped back into panic.
"HINATA-CHAN, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!"
He thrust Akamaru outward dramatically like presenting evidence in a criminal trial.
"I'M WORRIED ABOUT AKAMARU!"
Akamaru let out a miserable-sounding whine.
Hinata leaned closer.
Immediately, her face warmed.
Akamaru's tongue lolled from his mouth. His breathing came in fast little pants. His ears drooped strangely, and the skin around his muzzle looked flushed beneath the fur.
Kiba looked equally distressed.
"We ran into this like… wolf girl!" he said loudly, gesturing wildly with one hand. "And now he's been acting super weird all day!"
Akamaru made a tiny unhappy noise and buried his face against Kiba's jacket.
Hinata's blush deepened.
"…I-I think you should ask your mom about this…"
Kiba stared at her.
"…Huh?"
Hinata looked away immediately.
Kō cleared his throat into his fist and very deliberately turned his face toward the street.
The silence stretched.
Then realization detonated across Kiba's face.
"…NO."
Hinata's ears burned.
"…YES."
"UGH!" Kiba groaned, throwing his head back dramatically. "I JUST CAME FROM HOME!"
Akamaru barked once in agreement, sounding personally betrayed by biology itself.
Kiba squinted suspiciously at Hinata. "Wait. Why do you know that?"
Hinata nearly combusted on the spot.
"I-I read books!"
Kiba stared harder.
"…What kinda books?"
Hinata looked like she wanted the earth to split open beneath her sandals.
Kō mercifully intervened.
"The Hyūga compound possesses extensive veterinary and medicinal archives."
Kiba pointed accusingly. "See?! That answer was way less suspicious!"
Hinata covered part of her face with her sleeve.
Kiba finally lowered Akamaru a little, still grumbling. "Man… girls are weird."
Akamaru sneezed weakly.
"You are literally carrying a hormonal dog like a baby," Kō said flatly.
Kiba opened his mouth.
Closed it.
"…Okay, fair."
For a few moments, the awkwardness dissolved into softer quiet.
Cold air drifted through the trees overhead with a dry rustling hiss. Somewhere nearby, water trickled through one of Konoha's narrow drainage canals.
Kiba shifted Akamaru in his arms and looked back at the hospital.
"What were you doing in there anyway?"
Hinata glanced toward the illuminated windows behind her.
"Oh… uhm…" She rubbed lightly at her wrist. "I've been doing mednin training."
Kiba blinked.
"Seriously?"
Hinata nodded. "A little…"
"A little? Hinata-chan, you disappear for like weeks at a time lately."
She fidgeted slightly.
"I-I've been practicing other things too."
Kiba immediately leaned forward.
"What things?"
"N-nothing special…"
"That means it's definitely special."
"It isn't…"
"You did the voice."
Hinata blinked. "The voice?"
"The 'I'm hiding something' voice!"
"I do not have one…"
"You totally do."
Even Kō looked mildly interested now.
Hinata shrank a little beneath the attention. "I've just been… trying to improve."
Kiba tilted his head.
"…Combat stuff?"
She hesitated.
Then nodded once.
"And jutsu?"
Another tiny nod.
Kiba's eyes widened. "No way."
Hinata looked down at her sandals.
"I'm still not very good…"
"THAT means it's cool," Kiba declared immediately. "People only say that when they learned something awesome. Show me."
Hinata froze.
"R-right now?"
"Yes right now."
"We're in the street…"
"Exactly."
"Kiba-kun…"
"C'mon!"
Akamaru barked encouragement despite his suffering.
Hinata looked helplessly toward Kō.
The older Hyūga merely folded his arms into his sleeves. "You are permitted to demonstrate if you wish."
Which was absolutely not helpful.
Hinata inhaled quietly.
Then stepped toward the edge of the road where rainwater still pooled shallowly beside the stones.
The lanternlight reflected across the puddle in trembling gold.
Hinata crouched slightly.
Her fingers moved through careful seals.
The chakra gathered gently, not explosively like Naruto's or sharply like Neji's. It flowed through her coils in soft currents, steady and controlled.
The puddle trembled.
Then lifted.
A ribbon of water spiraled upward from the roadside in a smooth twisting arc. It coiled around her wrist, circling her arm in translucent loops that reflected the lantern glow like liquid glass.
Kiba's jaw dropped.
Hinata's concentration remained delicate, precise. The water shifted shape again, flattening outward into a rotating veil before snapping suddenly into a focused stream that struck a nearby training post with a sharp crack.
Thwack.
Not destructive.
Controlled.
The water immediately softened again, flowing harmlessly back into the gutter in rippling circles.
Silence.
Kiba stared at the post.
Then at Hinata.
Then back at the post.
"HINATA-CHAN."
Hinata startled. "Y-yes?"
"THAT WAS AWESOME."
Her face turned pink instantly. "I-it was just basic water manipulation…"
"NO IT WASN'T."
"It was…"
"You made it do spinny stuff."
Hinata blinked.
"…Spinny stuff?"
"Yeah!"
Kiba thrust a finger dramatically toward the puddle like identifying a legendary beast.
"It was all like fwoosh-shhhh-THWACK!"
Akamaru barked weak agreement.
Hinata couldn't help the tiny laugh that escaped her.
Kiba grinned immediately upon hearing it, like he'd won something.
"How'd you even learn that?" he asked.
Hinata looked down at the slowly settling water.
"…I'm not really strong like Naruto-kun or Neji-niisan," she admitted softly. "So I thought maybe… I should stop trying to force myself to fight the same way they do."
The night wind shifted through the trees above them.
Hinata watched the ripples flatten.
"You… um, try to move like water," she said quietly.
Kiba actually stopped interrupting.
"Water doesn't fight the rocks or the cracks. It finds its way around them." Her fingers twisted lightly together inside her sleeves. "If your heart is too stiff… things won't open for you."
Her voice softened further.
"But if you stay gentle, and let yourself adjust… then you can still be strong, even when it's hard."
The lanternlight flickered across her pale eyes.
"You can flow… you can strike… but…" She paused there, tiny fingers tightening slightly against the fabric of her sleeve. "…you don't have to break yourself against what's in front of you."
The quiet afterward felt different.
Not awkward.
Still.
Even the distant village sounds seemed farther away for a moment.
Kiba stared at her.
Then scratched the back of his head hard enough to ruffle his hood.
"…Man."
Hinata blinked nervously. "W-was that strange?"
"No," Kiba said immediately.
Then he grinned.
"That sounded super wise."
Hinata's face turned bright red. "I-it did not—"
"It totally did!"
Akamaru barked.
Kiba pointed at him triumphantly. "See? Even Akamaru agrees."
Akamaru sneezed directly into Kiba's face.
"…Okay maybe not."
Hinata laughed again, quieter this time.
And for once, when Kiba looked at her afterward, she didn't immediately look away.
