Chapter 36: The Rose and Trevor Incident
Elena's scream cut through the night air like a blade, my Sensory clone's mental alert hitting me before the sound registered consciously. Two vampire signatures, unfamiliar and desperate, carrying her away from the Gilbert house toward the woods.
I was already moving, phone pressed to my ear as Stefan's number rang.
"Elena's been taken," I said the moment he picked up. "Two vampires, heading northwest toward the old mill."
"We're on our way."
My three clones materialized around my car as I drove, the mental coordination flowing between us like electricity. Defensive Shield clone rode shotgun, Mind Shield and Sensory clones positioned in the back seat.
"Abandoned house, two miles out," Sensory clone reported. "They've stopped. Elena's heartbeat is elevated but steady—she's alive."
The house looked like something from a horror movie—peeling paint, broken shutters, windows boarded over with rotting plywood. But my enhanced senses could detect the supernatural presences inside, along with Elena's fear.
Stefan and Damon's car skidded to a stop beside mine, both brothers emerging with the deadly grace of predators ready for violence.
"How many?" Stefan asked.
"Two vampires, both scared out of their minds," I replied. "This feels like desperation, not malice."
Damon snorted. "Desperation makes them more dangerous, not less."
We approached the house with my clones providing tactical support. Sensory clone fed me constant updates while Mind Shield clone prepared to intercept any compulsion attempts. Defensive Shield clone stayed close to the Salvatores in case things went sideways.
Inside, we found them.
Two vampires knelt beside Elena, who was tied to a chair but otherwise unharmed. The male vampire looked like he hadn't fed properly in weeks, his face gaunt and desperate. The female was better maintained but carried herself with the wary tension of someone who'd been running for a very long time.
"Rose and Trevor," I said, recognizing them from the show.
Rose's head snapped up. "How do you know our names?"
"Lucky guess. Let Elena go, and we can talk."
Trevor laughed bitterly. "Talk? Do you have any idea what we've done? What we're running from?"
"Klaus," I said simply. "You're the vampires who helped Katherine escape in 1492. You've been running for five hundred years."
Rose stared at me with something approaching awe. "What are you?"
"Someone who might be able to help you," I replied. "Elijah Mikaelson is in town. He's not here to kill you—he wants to negotiate terms with Klaus for a controlled ritual."
"You're insane," Trevor whispered. "Elijah will rip our hearts out for what we did."
"Not if you help us willingly." I kept my voice calm, letting my Charisma stat work in my favor. "Right now, you're more valuable as allies than as corpses. Help us ensure the ritual succeeds, and you might actually survive Klaus's return."
Rose and Trevor exchanged glances, five centuries of shared desperation passing between them.
"We need to trade the doppelgänger to Elijah for forgiveness," Trevor said finally. "It's the only way."
"Then let's call him."
Before either vampire could respond, the temperature dropped and Elijah Mikaelson stepped through the front door like he owned the place. Rose and Trevor immediately fell to their knees, centuries of ingrained terror overriding rational thought.
"Rose. Trevor." His voice carried the weight of absolute authority. "It's been a long time."
"Elijah, please," Trevor begged. "We only did what we thought was right. Katherine was—"
"Irrelevant." Elijah's hand moved toward Trevor's chest with casual lethality. "Your betrayal enabled five centuries of chaos. The price—"
My Mind Shield clone blurred into motion, positioning himself directly in Elijah's path. The Original's hand passed through the clone's torso like it was made of mist.
"What—" Elijah paused, ancient eyes widening slightly as his supernatural strength encountered something impossible.

"Trevor and Rose can help ensure the ritual succeeds," I said quickly, taking advantage of Elijah's momentary confusion. "Killing them wastes resources we need."
Elijah straightened, his hand still extended but no longer moving toward Trevor's heart. "You continue to surprise me, Mr. Barton. Your... clone appears to have properties I wasn't aware of."
"We all have our secrets," I replied. "But right now, we need allies more than we need revenge."
The Original vampire studied me with those ancient eyes, calculating costs and benefits with a mind that had been making strategic decisions since before my country existed.
"Very well," he said finally. "They live—under your supervision."
Trevor collapsed forward, gasping with relief. Rose stared at me like I'd just performed a miracle.
"Thank you," she whispered.
Elijah smiled thinly. "Don't thank him yet. If they disappoint me, their deaths will be significantly more unpleasant."
After freeing Elena and ensuring she was unharmed, I found myself standing in the abandoned house's kitchen with two new vampire allies who owed me their lives. In vampire culture, saving someone from certain death created bonds that were difficult to break.
"Blood debt," Rose explained when I asked about their sudden loyalty. "You saved Trevor's life when Elijah would have killed him. That makes us yours until the debt is repaid."
"I don't want to own anyone," I said uncomfortably.
"Then consider us willing allies," Trevor said, still shaky from his near-death experience. "Whatever you need—information, muscle, connections—we're at your disposal."
I mentally cataloged my growing network. Pearl's group of tomb vampires. Stefan and Damon. Now Rose and Trevor. Plus Elijah's conditional alliance, Bonnie's magical support, and the human allies like Caroline, Alaric, and Sheriff Forbes.
"I'm not just collecting power," I realized. "I'm building a political structure. Alliances, debts, mutual obligations—this is how the supernatural world really works."

That night, my phone exploded with messages as news of the day's events spread through my network. Caroline's text was first: "Heard you saved more people today. I'm so proud of you."
Bonnie followed: "Rose and Trevor are teaching me vampire weaknesses. This could be useful for the ritual."
Elena's message was simple: "Thank you for always being there."
But the last message made my blood run cold. Unknown number, but I recognized the elegant phrasing immediately: "You're an interesting human, Mr. Barton. Klaus will want to meet you. Prepare accordingly. - E.M."
Elijah was right. My involvement in supernatural politics was about to attract attention from the most dangerous vampire in existence.
I sat on my porch with my three clones arranged around me—Mind Shield, Defensive Shield, and Sensory Enhancement. The fourth slot remained empty, waiting for the right moment to create another ally.
"We're ready," I told myself, checking the mental links to ensure all clones were functioning properly. "Whatever Klaus brings, we'll handle it."
But even as I tried to project confidence, I could feel the weight of what was coming. Klaus Mikaelson wasn't just another ancient vampire. He was the Original Hybrid, driven to madness by a thousand years of imprisonment in his own supernatural nature.
And somehow, I'd become the person trying to negotiate with him.
My phone buzzed with one final message from Caroline: "Movie night tomorrow? I rented Casablanca."
I smiled despite everything. Caroline Forbes, asking about movie night while I planned to bargain with apocalyptic supernatural entities. It was perfectly absurd and absolutely necessary.
"Sounds perfect," I texted back. "I'll bring popcorn."
Because if I was going to face Klaus Mikaelson in three days, I wanted to spend at least one more normal evening with the girl I loved first.
