Chapter 21 - THE PEAKS OF GLASS

The journey to the Crystal Mountains took eight days. Each morning, Ashreign and Mai woke to the smell of fresh grass and wildflowers, and each night, they slept under a sky full of stars that seemed brighter than ever before. The group traveling with them had grown along the way families from small villages they passed had joined them, eager to see the legendary peaks that had been hidden by darkness for decades.

On the ninth day, the mountains rose before them in full glory. They were taller than any story had described towering spires of white and clear crystal that caught the sun and scattered light into a thousand rainbows. The air grew thin and cool as they climbed, and the grass gave way to rocky slopes covered in small, glittering crystals that crunched under their feet.

"This is incredible," Mai whispered, her eyes wide as she looked up at the highest peak a massive spire of clear glass that seemed to touch the sky. "I've never seen anything like it."

Ashreign nodded, his hand tightening around the stone Terrax had given him. "They say the Crystal Mountains hold memories of the old world," he said. "Stories trapped in the crystal, waiting to be told."

A young woman named Zara, who had joined them from a village in the plains, walked up beside them. She was carrying a small bag full of crystals she had collected along the way. "My grandmother used to tell me that the mountains can show you your future," she said, her voice full of wonder. "If you stand at the top and look into the highest crystal."

Mai smiled. "Shall we find out?"

They climbed higher, the path growing steeper. The group moved slowly, helping each other over large rocks and across narrow ledges. Ashreign used his dark energy to create small pools of shadow that made the ground less slippery, while Mai's light illuminated the path ahead, making it easier to see.

As they neared the top, they heard a sound soft at first, then growing louder. It was like music, but not from any instrument they had ever heard. It was clear and pure, echoing off the crystal peaks.

"What is that?" Zara asked, stopping in her tracks.

Aeris flew down from the sky, her face full of awe. "I've been scouting ahead," she said. "The music is coming from the top. There's something up there something I've never seen before."

They climbed the last few feet, and the world opened up before them. The top of the highest peak was a small, flat clearing surrounded by crystal spires. In the center, a pool of clear water sat in a basin of white crystal, and from the water rose a column of light that hummed with soft music.

As they approached, the light split into thousands of small, glowing threads that danced in the air. Each thread showed a different image scenes from the old world, from the time before the darkness had come. They saw cities of crystal and stone, people laughing and dancing, guardians working together to keep the balance.

"These are the memories," Ashreign said, his voice barely a whisper. "The stories of what we lost and what we can build again."

Mai reached out, and one of the glowing threads touched her hand. She saw an image of a young woman with golden hair just like hers standing beside a man with dark eyes, holding hands in front of the same crystal pool. "It's us," she said, looking at Ashreign. "Or our ancestors. They stood right here, just like we are."

Ashreign reached out, and another thread touched his hand. He saw an image of the ancient darkness rising, of the old guardians fighting to stop it and failing. But then he saw another image: their own group at the Heartstone, their light merging to defeat the darkness. "It's a cycle," he said. "But this time, we broke it. This time, we chose balance over war."

The music grew louder, and the glowing threads began to wrap around the group, filling them with warmth and hope. Zara gasped as a thread touched her hand she saw an image of her village, rebuilt and thriving, with children playing in the streets and fields full of crops. "My future," she whispered, tears streaming down her face.

One by one, everyone in the group touched a thread, seeing their own hopes and dreams reflected back at them. Farmers saw their crops growing tall, warriors saw their villages safe, children saw themselves becoming guardians one day.

As the sun began to set, the threads of light merged back into a single column, and the music faded to a soft hum. The pool of water in the center of the clearing began to glow, and a small crystal rose from the depths clear and bright, with eight small colors swirling inside it: gold, black, red, blue, green, gray, white, purple.

Ashreign walked forward and picked up the crystal. It was warm in his hand, and he felt energy flowing from it energy that was familiar, yet new. "It's a piece of the Heartstone," he said, looking at Mai. "A piece that was lost when the ancient darkness rose. It's been waiting here for us."

Mai placed her hand on his, and their energy merged with the crystal's. The eight colors blazed brighter, and a wave of light spread out from the peak, covering the mountains and the plains below. They could feel it reaching across the world touching the other guardians, touching the villages they had rebuilt, touching every living thing.

"It's a reminder," Mai said. "That balance is not just something we fight for it's something we carry with us, wherever we go."

As they made their way down the mountain, the crystal held safely in Ashreign's bag, the group talked of what they had seen. They spoke of building new cities, of teaching their children the stories of the old world, of keeping the balance alive for generations to come.

When they reached the base of the mountains, they found a small valley with fertile soil and a clear stream. Zara looked at the valley, then at the group. "This is where I want to stay," she said. "I want to build a village here, at the foot of the mountains. A place where people can come to see the crystals, to hear the music, to remember what we've accomplished."

Others nodded in agreement. Some decided to stay with Zara, while others chose to continue their journey some to the Sea of Stars, some to the Crystal Mountains' eastern slopes, some back to the Wood Forest to share what they had learned.

Ashreign and Mai stood at the edge of the valley, looking up at the crystal peaks one last time. "Shall we continue?" Ashreign asked.

Mai smiled, taking his hand. "There's still so much of the world to see," she said. "So many stories to tell, so many dreams to build. Let's go find them."

They turned and walked toward the eastern horizon, where the sun was rising again warm, bright, and full of promise. The crystal in Ashreign's bag glowed softly, a reminder of the light that binds them, the dark that grounds them, and the world they were now free to explore.
