Chapter 45 - Sports Festival: Todoroki Shoto vs Midoriya Izuku

Uraraka was still smiling when Midoriya left the waiting room, and somehow that made it worse.

"Good luck, Deku!"

He paused at the doorway and looked back. Her cheek was bandaged, small scratches still visible where Recovery Girl had decided further healing would drain more stamina than it was worth. She had lost. Everyone in the stadium had watched her lose. She was still encouraging him anyway.

"Thanks."

The door closed behind him, and Midoriya stood alone in the corridor for a moment, his right hand curling, then relaxing.

The tournament had narrowed fast. Shinso, gone. Sero, gone. Yaoyorozu, Jiro, Kaminari, Uraraka, every match stripping away another person who'd fought just as hard to stand here as he had. And Midoriya was still moving forward.

He should have felt proud. He did feel proud. That was the problem. Pride sat strangely beside the knot still sitting in his stomach.

Second in the obstacle race. Advancing through the cavalry battle. A win over Shinso. On paper, the results looked genuinely impressive. None of it erased what he'd actually seen out there. Bakugo had spent his whole life refining a quirk until explosions felt as natural to him as moving his own hands. Todoroki could seize control of an entire battlefield before most opponents finished their second step. Fushiguro had an enormous arsenal, and used it without hesitating.

Those three had separated themselves from the rest of the field. Everyone knew it. Midoriya knew it too. That was the exact thought Shinso had found and pulled on, and that was what had made his words hurt as much as they had.

Midoriya had spent almost his entire life watching people born with things he could never have and wondering how far ahead they'd get before he ever received a chance to start at all. Now he had started. He had One For All, the greatest power he could ever have imagined, placed directly into his hands. And somehow part of him was still that same boy standing behind everyone else.

He looked down at those hands.

'How far do I still have to go?'

He already knew the answer. Far. His grip tightened. Fine. He'd go that far.

All Might's words surfaced on their own.

'I want you to tell the world "I am here!"'

Midoriya stopped walking.

The world. That was what this actually was. Millions of people watching. Professional heroes evaluating every move. Students across U.A. waiting for their own chance somewhere down the line. His mother watching from somewhere, probably worrying herself sick. And All Might, the man who'd looked at a quirkless boy and told him he could become a hero anyway.

For most of Midoriya's life, nobody looking at Izuku Midoriya would have seen someone destined to stand here. He remembered the laughter. The explosions against his desk. A doctor's office. His mother's tears. Hero notebooks filled up because studying other people's dreams had been easier than accepting his own could never happen.

Then All Might had reached his hand out to him.

Now Izuku Midoriya was walking toward a quarterfinal match at the U.A. Sports Festival, against Todoroki Shoto.

His mouth tightened.

'I am here.'

He wasn't ready to say it yet. So he'd show them instead.

...

Flames appeared at the far end of the corridor, and Midoriya stopped cold.

Endeavor.

The number two hero stood squarely between him and the arena entrance. Midoriya's whole body stiffened. "Endeavor?!"

"Oh, there you are."

Midoriya's nerves somehow found room to get worse. "Endeavor... what are you doing here?"

The older hero looked him over with the flat appraisal of someone assessing equipment. "I watched your fight. You have a wonderful quirk. You created that much wind pressure just by flicking a finger. For raw power alone, it's comparable to All Might's."

Midoriya's stomach dropped. For half a second terror swallowed everything else.

'Does he know?'

No. The way Endeavor had phrased it made that clear. He'd only noticed a resemblance in output. Nothing more.

"Wh-what are you trying to say? I need to go."

"It is my Shoto's duty to surpass All Might." Endeavor said it the way a man discusses an investment whose returns he expects to improve. "His match with you will be a very instructive test bed. Try not to disgrace yourself in it."

Something shifted in Midoriya's expression.

His duty. Not his dream. Not his choice. His duty.

Midoriya thought of Todoroki, the refusal to use his left side, that strange moment during the cavalry battle when heat had almost surfaced and Todoroki himself had looked genuinely disturbed by his own reaction to it. Midoriya didn't know what actually existed between father and son. But he understood exactly how Endeavor was talking about him, and he understood it well enough to answer.

"I am not All Might."

Endeavor's brow shifted. "That's obviou-"

"Todoroki isn't you either."

Silence.

Midoriya hadn't planned the words. They came out anyway, and Endeavor just stared at him. Midoriya swallowed and walked past, legs shaking slightly, and kept going without looking back.

...

Todoroki waited at the opposite entrance, cold already gathering around the fingertips of his right hand. His left stayed still.

He'd watched Midoriya's previous matches. More importantly, he'd seen enough of him since entering U.A. to know that judging him by first appearances was a mistake. Midoriya looked nervous constantly, right up until the match actually started, and then that nervousness compressed down into something closer to focus. Todoroki understood competitors like Bakugo and Fushiguro more easily, their ambition sitting right on the surface where anyone could read it. Midoriya's was quieter. That didn't make it weaker.

Todoroki flexed his right hand. Megumi's voice returned to him unprompted.

'Fight your father. Fight me. Pick one.'

His expression hardened. He'd already made his choice. He'd win without the fire. That was all there was to it.

...

"THANKS FOR WAITING, EVERYBODY!" Present Mic's voice exploded across the stadium, and the crowd answered in kind. "The quarterfinals are kicking off with a BIG ONE!"

Midoriya stepped into the sunlight. Noise hit him like actual pressure, thousands of faces, cameras, hero agencies, his classmates somewhere in the mass of it. Then he found All Might, and their eyes met across the whole distance.

The words he'd carried in his head since the tunnel came back to him one more time.

Midoriya inhaled.

"On one side, the man who's been turning this arena into a frozen wasteland since the tournament started, Todoroki Shoto!"

Todoroki stepped onto the field. The audience roared louder.

"And on the other, the problem child who somehow keeps surviving situations everybody thinks he's finished in, Midoriya Izuku!"

Midoriya stopped opposite him. Neither looked away.

"So you're here," Todoroki said.

"Todoroki."

Up in the stands, Uraraka leaned forward. "What's Deku going to do about all that ice?"

Tokoyami folded his arms. "The real question is whether he can even close the distance."

Megumi sat several seats away, attention fixed on Todoroki.

Midnight raised one arm. Midoriya lowered his stance. Todoroki turned his right hand toward the ground.

'First, he'll come at me with ice,' Midoriya thought.

"Start!"

"Go."

The arena disappeared. Ice exploded forward, a massive frozen wave swallowing the distance between them almost instantly. Midoriya's right hand snapped upward, middle finger extended.

"SMASH!"

Air detonated. The shockwave tore straight through the ice, white shattering into thousands of fragments, freezing wind blasting across the stadium hard enough that spectators actually recoiled in their seats.

"So cold!"

Midoriya's middle finger bent wrong, pain screaming up through his hand. He ignored it, because Todoroki had already attacked again, another wall of ice erupting toward him. Index finger this time.

"SMASH!"

BOOM.

The second wave shattered. Another attack came right behind it. Another finger. Another piece of himself spent to answer it. Todoroki remained completely untouched through all of it.

...

All Might's expression tightened as he watched. Young Midoriya had chosen the smallest possible sacrifice each time, a finger instead of an arm, an arm instead of his whole body. It was clever. It was also horrifying to watch unfold in real time. And it was the best option currently available to him.

...

Todoroki stared through the freezing mist. Just as expected. Midoriya was willing to hurt himself to cancel the ice, which meant he could simply keep making Todoroki do it.

A third wave. Midoriya's hand rose again.

"SMASH!"

The arena shook under it. Midoriya's breathing quickened.

'Think.'

Todoroki's fights usually ended too fast to gather much information out of them, so Midoriya had to collect what he could right now, in real time. Ice behind Todoroki anchored him against every shockwave. His right side produced every attack. His left stayed completely unused. Todoroki could react instantly, but even he needed real physical movement to direct and shape the larger formations.

Most importantly, there had to be a limit somewhere. Every quirk had one. Every body had one.

Another attack.

"SMASH!"

Pain. Midoriya's vision flashed white.

'I'm running out.'

...

Bakugo leaned forward in the stands. Kirishima stared down at the arena. "Midoriya's trying to drag this out?"

Bakugo clicked his tongue. Kaminari glanced over. "What?"

"Overuse a muscle, it tears. Keep running, you run out of breath." Bakugo's eyes stayed on Todoroki. "Quirks are physical too."

Megumi glanced toward him. "He's waiting for the limit."

Bakugo's eye cut sideways to him. "Obviously."

Megumi looked back at Todoroki. Frost had already started creeping across his shoulder.

...

"I'll end this quickly," Todoroki said, and charged.

Midoriya's eyes went wide as the range between them collapsed into close combat in an instant. Todoroki slid in fast across his own fresh ice. Midoriya fired another blast on reflex, and Todoroki simply jumped clean over it, landing well inside striking range before Midoriya could reset. Cold erupted underfoot. Ice locked his own foot flat to the arena floor.

'Too close.'

His right hand was already spent. He drew back his left fist instead, power surging through it, and drove the punch forward at point-blank range. The shockwave tore the ice off his own foot and slammed into Todoroki in the same instant, hurling him backward. The crowd erupted.

Todoroki slammed ice down behind himself, momentum dying just short of the boundary. Midoriya's right arm hung useless at his side, breathing ragged.

'It's not just his quirk.'

Judgment. Application. Mobility. Timing. Todoroki was strong in every single category, years of training living underneath every decision he made, and he still wasn't using everything he actually had.

The thought came back again. Bakugo. Fushiguro. Todoroki. Three people who seemed like they'd always been meant to stand at the front of any room they walked into.

Midoriya looked at his ruined hand. For one instant he was four years old again, a doctor's office, a joint in his toe, a dream reduced down to a plain anatomical fact.

'Stop.'

That boy existed. Midoriya wasn't ashamed of him. But he wasn't going to let that boy decide what happened next either.

He'd once believed the distance between himself and people like Kacchan could never be crossed, simply because he didn't have a quirk at all. Then All Might had given him a chance. A chance wasn't the same thing as instant equality. One For All hadn't erased ten years of nothing. It had given him somewhere to actually begin.

This was the beginning. Right now.

Todoroki raised his right hand again. "What, you're this beat up just from defending and running?"

Midoriya almost answered. Then he saw it, Todoroki's shoulder trembling, frost coating the entire right half of his body, his breathing starting to change shape.

'There.'

Todoroki stepped forward. "Let's finish this."

Ice raced across the arena. Midoriya destroyed it, pain nearly dropping him where he stood. He stayed upright anyway.

"You're slowing down."

Todoroki stopped.

Midoriya breathed hard through it. "You've been using nothing but ice." Frost thickened further around Todoroki's right arm as he said it. "Your body keeps getting colder." Todoroki's expression shifted. Midoriya looked toward the silent left side. "And you have a way to stop that."

Up in the stands, Megumi's eyes sharpened. Todoroki's left fingers twitched, just barely.

"I don't know why you won't use it." Midoriya lowered himself into a stance. "But if you're choosing to fight me with half of what you've got, then I'll make that choice cost you."

Todoroki's eyes went wide.

'Fight your father. Fight me. Pick one.'

Megumi's words, resurfacing at the worst possible moment. His jaw tightened.

"Shut up."

Ice erupted. Midoriya moved, the attack scraping past him close enough to feel. Todoroki advanced. Midoriya matched him step for step.

"Everyone here is trying to win!"

"Shut up!"

"Everyone's trying to show what they can do!"

Another attack, slower this time. Midoriya saw it coming and slipped past the edge of it, closing the distance. Todoroki lifted his foot. Midoriya read the motion before it finished.

'Now.'

He drove forward. Ice formed between them.

Too late.

Midoriya's left fist crashed into Todoroki's stomach, and the impact lifted him clean off his feet. The stadium erupted. Todoroki flew backward, ice catching him just before the line, eyes wide with something that hadn't been there a second earlier.

Midoriya stood hunched over, right hand mangled, one arm damaged, blood running down his fingers. He was smiling. Not because it didn't hurt, and not because he wasn't afraid. Because he'd reached him.

His heart hammered.

'Everyone. Look.'

The boy who once couldn't imagine getting through U.A.'s front gate had just driven Todoroki Shoto clean across the arena.

The promise he'd made himself back in the corridor settled over him again, steadier this time than it had been the first time he'd thought it.

For so long Midoriya had imagined those words as something grand, a declaration spoken from the top, something a person earned only after becoming so strong nobody could question it anymore.

Maybe he'd had it backward. Maybe "I am here" didn't begin after the fear finally disappeared. Maybe it began the first time you stood somewhere fear told you that you didn't belong.

Midoriya raised his ruined hand.

'I was quirkless.'

He looked at Todoroki.

'I was weak.'

Power gathered again.

'I was scared.'

Todoroki rose back to his feet.

'I'm still scared.'

Midoriya smiled straight through the pain.

'And I'm here anyway.'

...

Todoroki's breathing had gone ragged. Why? Why did Midoriya keep coming? His fingers were destroyed. His arm was damaged. Every single attack he threw carried a consequence Todoroki could see plainly from across the arena, and he kept advancing anyway.

Todoroki looked at his own left hand. Warmth waited there. Suppress the cold. Restore the balance. Use everything he actually had.

He crushed the impulse before it could finish forming.

Midoriya rushed him. Todoroki attacked. Midoriya broke through it anyway.

"You want to win, don't you?!"

Todoroki's eye twitched. Ice, wind, shattered concrete, and Midoriya kept pushing through all of it. "Then fight me!"

The words struck somewhere Todoroki didn't want touched. Todoroki hated that.

Todoroki's left hand clenched. For one instant, orange flickered between his fingers, tiny, barely more than a spark. But flame.

The stadium reacted. Megumi leaned forward. Endeavor shot to his feet.

"SHOTO!"

Todoroki heard him. The spark vanished instantly.

Midoriya saw it happen. His eyes went wide. He really can.

Todoroki stared down at his own hand, expression twisting. "No." He raised his right side instead, cold surging violently across the whole arena. "If I'm going to beat you, I'll do it with this."

Midoriya stared at him. He didn't understand. He wanted to, because that was simply part of being who he was.

Todoroki had chosen. Midoriya would answer that choice instead.

"Then come on!"
